Tiger and Strega were the big news though...

I missed but two races since 1967.

I believe Hughes was a regular racer in the Reno races...

Sadly, the races are getting fewer and fewer spectators due mostly in part to other "Stock Car" based racing...yes, I'm talking about NASCAR. You used to be able to catch ALL of the races live on SPEED Network, till they changed the programing to revolve around NASCAR and other American racing leagues.

howard hughes lost his mind before 1964 when reno started.He never raced in cleveland or anywhere else that had closed course racing.

There was another mustang with counter rotating props called the red baron and it won 1977 and 1978 before crashing in 1979.

uh, yeah, they were made at the end of the korean war for special ops over the sea of Japan. Just kidding man, that is about the most highly modified P-51 in the world. The only thing it is good for is air racing at Reno.....if you havent been there try to do it. Definatly worth the pilgrimage for an airplane buff....

Those Sea Furies are pretty...but I miss the look of the five bladed Rotol prop. Miss the sound of the Centaurus radials too.

this sound quality does not do the video or the actual event justice. When the planes come charging in on that last turn toward the air strip at full throttle the in and out of sync pitches the planes make are hair raising. It is probably simular to what they my have sounded like durring a WWII dog fight. Oh yeah "GO RARE BEAR!!!"
