I don't care that this wasn't as much a commercial success as Blondie's other hits, it remains my all-time favourite! The intro, Clem Burke's drumming (how often do you see a drummer stand up to pound out a beat?), the tempo and Debbie's vocals combine to make this a brilliant song.
I can't tell you how many times I played this song over and over again when I was 9 years old. To this day it rocks my world and brings back great memories of me lip synching to Debbie in my bedroom.
Check out the little smile 0:9 / 2:56 at the beginning of the video. If that smile doesnt cause your lil heart to miss a few beats than you are not a man!!!
My all time favorite song from Blondie since I was 14 or 15. They hardly ever played it on the radio, I heard it at the school that I went to at that time & on TV. I wonder if the idea for this song came from The Tornados - Telstar.
My Fave Blondie song!Blondie are one of the best bands in the world! They are awesome and their songs are timeless!People will always love Blondie and Debbie Harry! You are beautiful!Always!
I always thought the way Clem did sixteeth note fills twice every measure as part of the groove made him sound really unique and it still stays tight and in the pocket!
love this song. was born 9 years later but makes me feel like I was a teen in those times. some songs totally capture that moment in time so perfectly. blondie forever!
Tis September 22, 2010, and I heard this song on the radio today...yes, FM radio. In an instant I was back in the late 70's. A geeky high school nerd listening to music no one else listened to, on a converted car stereo through an old AM Tube console! For almost 3 minutes today, I had an ear-to-ear grin. It matters NOT about the video, the guitars unplugged, the lip-synching. What matters is the moment of this song, and where it happens to take you when you unexpectedly hear it again!!
BOY what I wouldnt do to be able to go back in time and be with this woman! She has more talent in her pinky finger than todays so called stars got in there entire bodies! Ill sit with her and watch the traffic go! Love you DH!
I just realized one of the things that has always drawn me to this song - the vocal melody in the last 2 lines of each verse sound just like the melody in the song Telstar.
lol EMALYN so true only could deb make punk sexy, filthy, classy, and pop without selling out. One of a kind will never get another deb nor a band like Blondie
Would you guys believe me if I said that Clem has said that if he could do this song over again he would tone down on the drumming. He said that the strong drum sound made the song less commercial so it was not as big of a hit as it could have been. I think this song is what it is today because of the strong drumming on it. It's perfect the way it is!
@doetim I'm surprised he'd care that it didn't have as much "mass appeal," being such a veteran of the initial NYC punk scene. To me, it actually sounds ten times catchier than the average drum track due to all the crazy fills, so I'm a bit puzzled myself. I rarely find drums this amazing in anything, and I'm a fan of a lot of drummers.
@doetim@doetim I'm surprised he'd care that it didn't have as much "mass appeal," with him being such a veteran of the initial NYC punk scene and all. To me, it actually sounds ten times catchier than the average drum track due to all the crazy fills, so I'm a bit puzzled myself. I rarely find drums this memorable in anything, and I'm a fan of a lot of drummers.

I took up playing the drums because of Clem Burke's playing on this song.
I'm glad that it was less commercially succesful and more rhythmically spectacular.
When I run this through my system that can really handle the punch off the Toms and Kick I feel like I'm just going to fly away on his heavy, unrelenting, driving play - and PLUS, those Premier shells are damn sweet sounding (even though he now plays DW).
If you're going to go to the trouble to inform us that this is a digital remaster would it be possible for you to actually post a version that sounds like it was remastered rather than a copy that sounds like it was pulled off of a copy of somebody's VHS tape that's been sitting in a cabinet for 20 years?
This is my favorite Blondie song of all time. It has a catchy guitar riff, cool drum rolls, and an ear catching chorus. This is Debbie Harry at her best. Her voice is so unique too, not like those oversynthesised computerized pop singers of today.
Many thanks to EMI for uploading this. Debbie was a gorgeous woman, and sometimes the quality of the band gets overlooked, but this shouldn't, it was excellent.
Great band. Awesome drummer. Debra is so hot. I like the lip gloss. Kick ass song. Did i mention I like lip gloss..Debra i is mighty fine...repeating myself....
Dearest Blondie, thanks for all that love, joy and happiness that you have given us during all these marvellous years of our youth ....We are getting old today but our hearts, heads and souls are still full of your warm and fresh music like a fountain of youth, like the sun's light....God bless you Debbie Harry...:-))
aye yo Debbie was sexy!! but she still got dem sexy ass lips! and btw, she said she wants to record with lady gaga so I think she feels her swag so....
"have a cup of tea" - Blondie like The Killers know that their biggest fan base is in Britan. I guess that is why Blondie hired The Killers producer for their next album "Panic of Girls"!
I know most of the audience was loaded on ya-yo, and acting like yo-yo's...but ya gotta admit. Looks like fun. And from a fan's point of view, I love this video. It practically bursts from the screen, and parades you around, until you're dizzy. Classic Debbie Harry; wonderful singer. Always loved this song, and I truly appreciate the fact it's on here. Cheers!!
That's a stunning piece of drumming by the brilliant Clem Burke, I'm a former musician a Drummer in fact and played lots of clubs around the north east of England, i tried to play this and i thought my arms where going to sieze up.
@creepycooper I love Heavy percussion and the drumming is what makes this song go. Great performance from Clem. The guys behind the tomtoms never get enough credit. They're the true blue collar workers of most bands.
@MrDaveyHansen Thanks for reply, Yea i have nearly always said a band is only as good as it's drummer, at the end of the day that is the main rythem piece and all have to follow, but Clem was an absolute animal in the early days he could hardly keep it togeather and was all over the place, but when they finished with the Punk stuff and signed to Crysalis records he spent a lot of practice time with Chris Franz from Talking Heads and managed to tame him and now he is a drum legend.
@eugi0070 Yea man did you know infact that in his early drum years Clem was so wild and out of control but still being a talented drummer that the band's management sent him to be calmed and nurtured by the great Chris Frantz from Talking Heads, payed off did'nt it.
Eat to the Beat was the very first cassette tape I bought for the very first boom box I ever owned. Ah, eighth grade. I was listening to New Wave when all my classmates were listening to their older brothers' Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin albums.
@flares I think that may be the late 70's supermodel Gia Carangi. She was in Blondie's Atomic video and I've also read that she's in this one, and none of the women aside from the one wearing goggles looks like her.
Burke is a great guy. had the pleasure of meeting him a while ago after Blondie first broke up. He was playing for a band at Arlenes Grocery in Greenwich Village. My buddy Mike introduced me to him. Just a nice man. Sat and talked about absolutely nothing for about 15 minutes. He made us all laugh.
@NytoPitt Clem Burke is one of my all time favourite drummers, great taste in drums too, the old premier kits were awesome, shame they've lost the plot now. One of my friends owns an ex Clem Burke kit and it looks very much like the one in this video, I have often wondered if it is this actual kit.
I've always LOVED this song for the fantasitc drumming. Clem Burke should have more people spred the "Buzz" on how great this guy was/is. The kids now days HAVE no idea, once I show them this they start looking into more and more "great" players in other band. Really LISTENING to the old songs for MUSICIANSHIP.
She admitted to taking a lot of coke in the 70's and 80's. Drugs are great though, without them we wouldn't have Blondie, Bowie or the Beatles. The 3 B's.
Todays Divas are nothing more than a bunch of street corner whores... Debby was and always will be a true STAR!!! Thanks to EMALYN51508 and DREAMING IS FREE
My fave Blondie song i think. Don't ever compare Lady Gaga to Blondie. Gaga is not my cup of tea--she's no slacker, after all she got into Tisch--but Debbie and the boys just blow her away. And you never had a Blondie song bouncing around in your head (like a bullet in a tank) in an annoying way (think "Paparazzi").
One of my favorite things about being alive is hearing to Deborah Harry sing this song. Her voice does something to me. I don't know what it does but I love it.
Look at the people dancing in the background... they look like they are actually enjoying themselves. If you shot this video today all the extras would be pouting and trying to get themselves on the X-factor..... and looking DULL
And notice how in every Blondie vid the extras always look very dated and 70's, but Debbie timeless. Not just the aesthetics too, the attitude Debbie had never goes out of style.
No need for remix or dubbing here, no need for adjustment..just raw talent. I like the lip gloss. I like the eyes. I like the smile. I like the attitude most of all. I want one of those. Fun.
In NO way will Lady Gaga come close to the hottest lady ever in music," Debbie Harry". Debbie and Blondie is so good that Gaga don't have a chance to get to the highth of Debbie. Debbie Harry's face was touched by God and Gags looks like a crack whore! Sorry Gaga fans, but don't compare them, Debbie would win everytime!!
After watching a bunch of Blondie videos, it seems like Lady Gaga (love her) is a more manufactured version of Debbie Harry. There are a lot of similarities in terms of their bios too.
I don't care that this wasn't as much a commercial success as Blondie's other hits, it remains my all-time favourite! The intro, Clem Burke's drumming (how often do you see a drummer stand up to pound out a beat?), the tempo and Debbie's vocals combine to make this a brilliant song.

Perhaps my favourite Blondie song, always and forever, Debbie has my heart, but in a different way! ;DD

Debbie is great, but here looks like she's affected by drugs
Jaws65 2 years ago
@Jaws65
ALways the druggies who can spot out other druggies.
She's performing a rock song and she's got energy and sweat, why is that drugs?
guyinsf 2 years ago 4
She admitted to taking a lot of coke in the 70's and 80's. Drugs are great though, without them we wouldn't have Blondie, Bowie or the Beatles. The 3 B's.

That drummer must be in top shape - playing like that takes it out of you like little else.

If you shot this video today all the extras would be pouting and trying to get themselves on the X-factor..... and looking DULL
krancioch 2 years ago 49
And notice how in every Blondie vid the extras always look very dated and 70's, but Debbie timeless. Not just the aesthetics too, the attitude Debbie had never goes out of style.

@krancioch thats because the spectators in videos today think they are the stars and also pretend that they enjoy the rubbish music of today....

Tim777G 2 years ago 11
After watching a bunch of Blondie videos, it seems like Lady Gaga (love her) is a more manufactured version of Debbie Harry. There are a lot of similarities in terms of their bios too.
