Chiang Kai-shek wasn't a great leader. But he was a great general who managed to reunite China, albeit not culturally. China could have been a much more prosperous country, it was only thirty years after he abdicated that China finally liberalized their economy. I grew up in Taiwan and i remember having to sing songs about great leader Chiang Kai-shek in grade school and reading book about how awesome and "brave" he is in textbooks. He ruled Taiwan like a God almost like North Korea's Kim Jung Ill. Unfortunatly, he is able to brainwash many people. Even to this day, there's a larger than life "god-like" statue in Taipei and people still worshipping him and Taiwan is an "established" first-world democracy. It's pretty fucking sad.
This is stupid, Chiang Kai-shek isn't responsible for isolating Taiwan from the world, mainland China is responsible for that. Also, Chiang Kai-shek may have abused human rights but he's mostly responsible for the high quality of life that most Taiwanese enjoy today.
I wonder how the situation is now. A year after this video was made the candidate from Guomindang won the presidential election by a landslide, so Chiangs party is back in power and it doesn't look like they'll be leaving any time soon.

Chiang did not order the 2-28 Massacre and was not ewen aware of it until afterwards. Chiang built up the Taiwanese economy by promoting capitalism, and he granted limited political rights and freedom of religion. And he never embezzled any of the country's money. Despite his faults, he was much better than Mao would have been. And his strong allegiance to American world leadership secured a special relationship between the 2 countries even after diplomatic ties were severed.
Also, Chiang's diary shows that in fact he did not embezzle government funds, although he is often accused of doing so. And he didn't abandon Nanking. The DPP lady says the economic trouble of Taiwan is due too the KMT and their trouble with mainland. That is such a big lie. Taiwan was the economic miracle under the KMT. DPP ruined the country with their divisive infighting and horrendous corruption. The DPP president drained the treasury into his childrens bank accounts. DPP cause the most trouble with the mainland and they were the biggest threat to peace by insisting to declare independence. The KMT never wanted to do this.

DPP was going down the road to war and conflict with the mainland, and they destroyed the economy. The KMT are in favor of peaceful negotiation and long term re-unification with China. That is by far the best path for Taiwan, for peace, and for their economy. DPP are a bunch of corrupt fanatic war mongers. The US had to scold the DPP president many times for declaring Taiwan independent.

The US may have protected Tawain in 1949, but they woudnt do it today. They especially would not support Taiwan calling itself independent. We have to much vested interest in mainland China to break that relationship for Taiwan, a small island country that has nothing to offer us. The US is in favor of peaceful reunification. The KMT is the best hope for peace, stability and prosperity, and reunification.

That's a good point you made - But China's faithless kiss is not something Taiwan wants to feel. And Taiwan's economy is healthy enough.
Thankfully in Taiwan ROC, people can choose what they want. They do not desire to be part of the PRC, where they will be told what they want.
If China PRC took control then they could choose to try and make Taiwan richer or as poor as somewhere like Cambodia.
ROC cannot trust the PRC to be faithful - that's a good reason to remain as Taiwan ROC.

This is a sloppy piece of reporting from a right wing British newspaper. True, the guide's English is appalling but the essence of her words were historically accurate. Both Chiang and Mao were dictators and both were responsible for mass deaths. Many Taiwanese dislike Chiang because he ordered the 2-28 massacre, instituted the world's longest running period of Martial Law, put his son in charge and amassed huge wealth for his family at Taiwan's expense. He was no Sun Yat Sen.

Chiang did not order the 2-28 Massacre and was not ewen aware of it until afterwards. Chiang built up the Taiwanese economy by promoting capitalism, and he granted limited political rights and freedom of religion. And he never embezzled any of the country's money. Despite his faults, he was much better than Mao would have been. And his strong allegiance to American world leadership secured a special relationship between the 2 countries even after diplomatic ties were severed.

True, Chiang Kai-shek was a dictator that limited personal freedoms in Taiwan. But he also made incredible economic progress. Taiwan's economy is huge now, due largely to the economic foundation laid by Chiang during his reign. At the very least, he was far better than Mao on the mainland.

I think that limited works in some situations, but not free-market capitalism with no government regulations. I'm basically a socialist, though, and I think if the good of the public is ever at odds with property rights, the public comes first.
I should also amend my previous post: Communism is not intrinsically totalitarian, but the form implemented in China and the former USSR is.

Chiang Kai-Shek did make mistakes during his leadership, some pretty bad ones even. But who killed more Chinese people? Mao Zeodong? Or Chiang Kai-Shek? Mao made some really bad errors himself with his Great Leap Forward, or should I say backward in this case. Either way, Chiang, for better and for worse formed the 1st Republic of China, and was the successor to Sun Yat-sen.
