When rehearsing for this performance, we played one night on the roof of a building. As the last notes of the third movement melted away, the sounds of the city (sirens, car alarms, etc.) filtered slowly in. It was, for me, the ultimate affirmation of Reich's compositional climate; that of taking music out of the concert hall and reframing performance for a new generation of composers, interpreters, and listeners. In this regard, I think Drumming functions flawlessly as an outdoor, urban piece.
drumming is a drinking piece.
