I'd like to see a box showing which videos are generating the most comments. I don't use Twitter, so maybe this is the kind of thing Trending is based on. Or is that just sharing? And perhaps a way to recommend that a video is worth watching that isn't tied to a rating system. That would take away the problem of 'Liking' dislikeable content. Looking forward to it opening up, I think a bit of variety would really help at this stage.
@DaithiDublin That's a great idea. A kind of 'Most Active Video' rather that Most Active User. I'd also like a system that shares recommendations amongst users without rating it. I think the existing 'Remember' (Favourite) system could be adapted to do that.
When you said "trending topics", maybe you could do it via tags? For example, the most used tag could be set as the "trend" and then you could put up the video with the most views/comments/likes/etc on the home page. Maybe you could use it to highlight new users with interesting/cool content.
@ZaneShadowcast I'll give it a go using tags, that certainly does seem to be the easiest (although people use tags in fairly arbitrary ways at the moment). I also like the idea of a video that is generating a lot of discussion being featured on the front page.
I have not lost interest. I'm moving. Every moment, pretty much, is dedicated to this. I have difficulty concentrating on new concepts, and would rather pay attention to YDub when I'm not distracted.
I really like the trending topics idea especially because it'll help keep people updated with what's going in with the community as a whole and not just user or another
Regarding the rating system; I dislike the 'like' and 'dislike' rating because you could for eg have a disturbing documentary or message about reality. It's a little weird then click a button to say you 'Like' it.
@arcaneminded I share that feeling. I really hate 'liking' something like that, it's feels too jolly. Maybe we should go with something like 'agree' or 'disagree', or maybe that reflects value in a more general sense, rather than just entertainment.
@fuckoverload I don't think that will be too hard to put into place, although it will need to social architecture tools (I'm starting to use 'architecture' instead of 'engineering')
@ 3:06 -- I frequently do this, so I can address individual statements, some of which I'll agree with and some of which I won't. For a 'thumb' system to feel wholesome, I think it would need to be sensitive to /when/ it was pressed. It would be an interesting (and unique, probably) feature to see the ups and downs with timecodes. To make it clear this is a 'statement/claim' rater, you'd have your regular pair of thumbs for 'overall', conventional like/not-like, and another pair for timecodes.
@fuckoverload That would be brilliant. It's way beyond my meagre abilities but if you know anyone who could build something like that it would be great.
@conferencereport Pyrrho made something like this for taking notes during debate. I imagine it would require a minimal adjustment to catch the timecode (and maybe move it to the nearest 10 second point) with a two-option thumb-click. I've never spoken with the guy but I believe you have some history so hopefully he'll be happy to help. There's no sense re-inventing the wheel over and over. :) ACAIvirus.
I really like your topics box idea. Having an update as to what topics are being discussed at present would be great. With regard to a rating system I agree, thumbs down adds something to the atmosphere of discussion that would be a shame to go without.
@amabodei Ideally I'd like to link it to a hashtags system, so rather than just scouring tags (which often include irrelevant words and connectives like 'and') it would search for specific topics, perhaps linked directly to Twitter
It could be I am not remembering this correctly, but I thought you said before that you disliked the like/dislike rating system. In any case, I've always preferred the star system since it provides a range of favor/disfavor and isn't as black & white as the like/dislike system.
@DanaGarrett I dislike the way it's instantiated on Youtube because of the asymmetry. I also have misgivings about the idea of 'disliking' generally. However, I do like transparent positive evaluation systems like star ratings.

I really like the concept of distance! What about only one button, just a 'like' button that determines a system of priority among all of the videos?
tonyfalca 4 weeks ago
@tonyfalca I like the concept of distance too. Maybe we could keep it in but refer to it in a more intuitive way.
conferencereport 4 weeks ago
@conferencereport What do you mean by a more intuitive way?? And why are you wanting to adjust it -- because it's not being used much??
