The movie is leagues above the novel. The novel is long-winded and overloaded with chunks of untransmuted research--all of it trimmed in the movie. The exorcism goes on for days in the novel, with interruptions for Karl and all of his bullshit, Sharon and all of her bullshit, and Kinderman and all of his bullshit--whereas in the movie it's concentrated and powerful.
a movie doesn't need all the money (budget wise) in the world or the most extreme effects or props one could imagine to make a movie believable or successful. All it needs is an actual case to base it on and the viewers to realize that. Hence, nothing can surpass such a movie.
