"Tripper85" just below me is correct. Japan attacking US had nothing to do with US and Germany. US was busy fighting Japan they never declared a war with Germany. It was Hitler who declared war on US first when US was only supplying weapons to Britain. Hitler declaraed war on Soviets, Brits and Yankies all one after the other. A big mistake. But Germany and Japan did benefit from each other by having common enemies.

The two countries were too far away to support each other, unlike the US with Britain, and the Japanese weren't interested in diverting the Russians for Hitler. US destroyers were even sometimes fighting U-boots on Atlantic. Roosevelt was looking for a way to join the war, but he didn't have support in society. US did almost everything to provoke Japan. Embargo imposed on them meant that war is a matter of time, and US politicians knew it. So propably, they would declare war on Germany after PH.

Roosevelt greatly wanted war, but he didn't want to be agressor, because there was no support for it in society.

@thegregjay1 Not if you look at the facts -- the Germans made good time in that first year, but took huge losses in the process, far more in proportion to what they had experienced in France the year before. They were like a sharp knife being ground down over time. Eventually it ground away to nothing. The bad weather certainly helped, but despite superficial appearances the Russians were doing the Germans grievous harm and it eventually caught up to halt the German advance.
Cold and bad roads handicapped Russians almost as much as it did Germans. Despite the common stereotype, the Russians don't have antifreeze in their veins. The cold did not beat the Germans. The Russians beat the Germans despite suffering the same cold.

Britan had decleard war in September 1939, almost 6 years before the Red army's first tanks rolled into Selow heights and since June 6th 1944 both the United States and Britan had been fighting the German's through europe. When the us came into the war they only 500,000 troops at the time. build up is necessary before invasion. so dont think its all about the russians, or brittish, or the USA. together they won. russia took control of the sky in American P-47's and Brittish Spitfires. once they controlled the sky their progress picked up. US was also fighting on 2 fronts so its understandable why their contribution in Europe wasnt as much as the others.
@hellagesoon, USA entered the war <6-months after 22JUN41 when the Nazis invaded the USSR. USA was already sending aid the the the Western Allies & the USSR before this. USA supplied all the Allies with massive amounts of war material & resources of all types. Stalin & Zhulov both said this aid was vital but the documents stating this were just recently released. USA alone built ~70,000 ships & landing of types to move the material & troops across the seas. Ever hear of the IJN?
@CarstenOepping I suggest you look at figures for US aid - I also suggest you go to Russia and see for yourself how much US and UK equipment there is there. Without aid from the west the USSR would probably have gone under.

@CarstenOepping It is not sufficient to look just at tanks. Almost all medical materials and radios came from the west. Large amounts of electronics as you mention. The US supplied sufficient food to feed the entire Red Army and despite this there was still starvation - how much would there have been without? Large amounts of trucks, motor vehicles, minerals, oil - although the USSR also supplied some minerals to the USA too.
And what did the west get in return? The Cold War.

Unlike his cowardly hiding out of bombing range at Rastenburg or in his bunker, gas would have got him too had the Allies used it. Capturing Moscow means nothing. The Russians will always abandon their capital and move their heads of government behind the Ural Mountains. They will always hold out until the Russian winter and then leave Moscow when the enemy approaches. The Nazis should of tried to take the Ural Mountains, chasing the heads of government deeper into Siberia until peace was made. Just a thought.

I have never seen a more accurate two sentence summary of the Soviet attitude in the 2nd World War. They had been invaded by an enemy that would destroy their nation, enslave and then murder their entire people (in that order). It was a war for both personal and national survival.
In such cases, their may indeed be no right, only the lesser evil. Shooting their own soldiers to make them fight was a lesser evil. Such a thing could happen here. It could happen anywhere.

How could anyone with even limited knowlage of this confilct even begin to sugest that the Gremans were on the same level of brutality as the Russians. Clearly they took evil to a new level. In a country of 70 or 80 million, the number of soldiers who served exceeded ten million, an incredibly high percentage of the population. I never believed in "Combat Fatigue" until I saw it with my own eyes. A family friend came back from Vietnam in 1969. He had "cracked" under combat stress. Before the War Dick was a nice kid, sense of humor, good golfer. When he came back he just sat on the sofa, chain smoking and blankly watching TV. Never spoke in full sentences and never went to bed. Napped ocassionally on the sofa. It was 20 years before he finally became more or less normal again. Tragic...
NKVD would shoot cowardly troops who fled the fighting. They were rewarded for keeping their troops tough and for keeping discipline in the frontlines. Men, out of instinct will "crack" and flee for their survival. In the brutality of war that can't be tolerated. General Patton got in trouble for merely slapping a "nervous" soldier in a field hospital. Soviets were MUCH tougher than us (Americans) on keeping discipline and focus on defeating their enemies.

To the argument about shooting retreating soldiers.
History has shown that soldiers do amazing things when the have no choice but to advance.
While I DO NOT agree with this tactic take a look at a similar situation where retreat was not an option. D Day , the sea was at their backs, the only place to go was to advance. At least the guys on the landing craft were not shooting them, if they did. But I think the Russian officers were trying to instill the seriousness of their situation.I donot like

@thegregjay1 Not if you look at the facts -- the Germans made good time in that first year, but took huge losses in the process, far more in proportion to what they had experienced in France the year before. They were like a sharp knife being ground down over time. Eventually it ground away to nothing. The bad weather certainly helped, but despite superficial appearances the Russians were doing the Germans grievous harm and it eventually caught up to halt the German advance.

@freesince1776 very true that the Russians and Germans both suffered in cold but local knowledge of conditions must have helped.Someone from Bavaria is not so used to the winter of Ukraine as a Ukranian or Russian. The Russian winter did for more Frenchmen under Napoleon as well,local knowledge helps a lot,same as the Americans against the British in the 1700`s.

@skull16cr So, I guess the (with Commonwealth aid) whole liberated North Africa, then Italy, then France, and then conquering Germany thing was just Allied propaganda? Please, if you are going to make such ill-informed statements please at least try to stay somewhere close to the boundaries of reality. By the end of '44 the US army was the best around -- as their victories proved. The Germans were of course good as well, but they benefited early on thanks to fighting unprepared adversaries.

@hellagesoon Stalin was begging the allies to open a second front b/c russia was on the verge of collapse by 1943. it was slow going for the russians. they only picked up the pace when US and brittish arms began to pour into thier country. the crushing of hitler was an "allied" effort. No one country could have done it alone.

When the us came into the war they only 500,000 troops at the time. build up is necessary before invasion. so dont think its all about the russians, or brittish, or the USA. together they won. russia took control of the sky in American P-47's and Brittish Spitfires. once they controlled the sky their progress picked up. US was also fighting on 2 fronts so its understandable why their contribution in Europe wasnt as much as the others.

@hellagesoon, USA entered the war <6-months after 22JUN41 when the Nazis invaded the USSR. USA was already sending aid the the the Western Allies & the USSR before this. USA supplied all the Allies with massive amounts of war material & resources of all types. Stalin & Zhulov both said this aid was vital but the documents stating this were just recently released. USA alone built ~70,000 ships & landing of types to move the material & troops across the seas. Ever hear of the IJN?

180.000 tanks (all types) for instance aid: 1400 . same with planes and howitzers and ammo.
only difference: trucks and electronics. the soviets really need those trucks - war decisive?

@CarstenOepping It is not sufficient to look just at tanks. Almost all medical materials and radios came from the west. Large amounts of electronics as you mention. The US supplied sufficient food to feed the entire Red Army and despite this there was still starvation - how much would there have been without? Large amounts of trucks, motor vehicles, minerals, oil - although the USSR also supplied some minerals to the USA too.
And what did the west get in return? The Cold War.

Weizsäcker,Otto Hahn (first atomic cracking -discover Barium in 38) M.v. Ardenne,Paul Harteck +many more) working since 38 in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute Berlin. the main problem was: lack of money and resources. this project have less priority because Hitler need weapons soon. they expected 3-5 years - too long time for Hitler.

Unlike his cowardly hiding out of bombing range at Rastenburg or in his bunker, gas would have got him too had the Allies used it. Hitler also may have remembered being gassed himself in WW1 and not fancied a rerun!

Capturing Moscow means nothing. The Russians will always abandon their capital and move their heads of government behind the Ural Mountains. They will always hold out until the Russian winter and then leave Moscow when the enemy approaches. The Nazis should of tried to take the Ural Mountains, chasing the heads of government deeper into Siberia until peace was made. Just a thought.

One of the most sick aspects of the Eastern Front was the total disregard, by each side, for their own human life. Hitler and Stalin would needlessly and uselessly hold ground or adopt rearguard "killing platoons" to force their soldiers to die.

I have never seen a more accurate two sentence summary of the Soviet attitude in the 2nd World War. They had been invaded by an enemy that would destroy their nation, enslave and then murder their entire people (in that order). It was a war for both personal and national survival.
In such cases, their may indeed be no right, only the lesser evil. Shooting their own soldiers to make them fight was a lesser evil. Such a thing could happen here. It could happen anywhere.

How could anyone with even limited knowlage of this confilct even begin to sugest that the Gremans were on the same level of brutality as the Russians. Clearly they took evil to a new level. Their war was one of extermanition. This is clearly documented. Germany was the aggressor. Not the soviets. We in the west are way to soft on the Germans with our sanitized version of history which is mostly half truths and outright lies. We to this day still belive the lies of the captured German generals.

In a country of 70 or 80 million, the number of soldiers who served exceeded ten million, an incredibly high percentage of the population. Most, not some, most of the army was caught up in the brutality. Auschwitz guards laughed and sang while Jews died. And here we see men like Horn, in their own words.

I never believed in "Combat Fatigue" until I saw it with my own eyes. A family friend came back from Vietnam in 1969. He had "cracked" under combat stress. Before the War Dick was a nice kid, sense of humor, good golfer. When he came back he just sat on the sofa, chain smoking and blankly watching TV. Never spoke in full sentences and never went to bed. Napped ocassionally on the sofa. It was 20 years before he finally became more or less normal again. Tragic...

NKVD would shoot cowardly troops who fled the fighting. They were rewarded for keeping their troops tough and for keeping discipline in the frontlines. Men, out of instinct will "crack" and flee for their survival. In the brutality of war that can't be tolerated. General Patton got in trouble for merely slapping a "nervous" soldier in a field hospital. Soviets were MUCH tougher than us (Americans) on keeping discipline and focus on defeating their enemies.

I have read something u have written gays............war will always destroy somebody or everybody, but these poor gays had to go to war. They had no choice. It was to protect or attack......... @tusenkunstneren2 Sadly, there are those who wish to demonize regular German soldiers. The argument is that the German army intended to starve Russia and therefore was guilty of genocidal intent. That this equalizes the SS and the Wehrmacht means nothing to such persons. Anything to justify the notion of the "Holodomar", one gathers.

To the argument about shooting retreating soldiers.
History has shown that soldiers do amazing things when the have no choice but to advance.
While I DO NOT agree with this tactic take a look at a similar situation where retreat was not an option. D Day , the sea was at their backs, the only place to go was to advance. At least the guys on the landing craft were not shooting them, if they did. But I think the Russian officers were trying to instill the seriousness of their situation.I donot like
