If you're three steps above the number one contender...Chances are, you've just beaten someone who beat everyone else to get to you which in turn pretty much makes the number 2 contender an easy fight. I think if you train/live right, you can go past 30

@DestroyerAlexandros I dunno anyone who has moved UP in weight and destroyed everybody...Anderson Silva beat a couple people but he makes everyone, his weight class or otherwise, look like amateurs. Simply not enough fighters to build up boxing records like 30 and 40 fights so it's hard to tell who is really best. Also, it's debatable if having huge records like that would be bad, what with the 4oz gloves and everything. Then again, Melvin Guillard has a TON of fights and is still healthy
@gooberhead81 The 4oz gloves are much healthier, because you can take less damage before you go down, so you don't have to take 100 shots before you go down. Plus 12 oz gloves are heavier, so it's his body weight + 12 oz hitting you and in MMA it's his body weight + 4 oz. It's like in tennis, even 10 grams can make the racquet uncontrollably powerful. My point is that MMA doesn't have any super athletes like better paid sports, who can dominate against all odds, like Pacquiao, Federer, etc.

I mean there are a lot of guys who look like amateur bodybuilders (Thiago Alves comes to mind)? Hopefully when the sport progresses and we see more 5 round matches/more well rounded fighters guys are gonna realize that it's more important to have great cardio/flexiblity/speed than pure power. BTW Cain Velasquez came in fat yesterday and lost :D
@DestroyerAlexandros Some are definitely heavier than they need to be and would probably function better at a lower weight...I think sometimes the muscle is put on due to the effort put towards strengthening one set of skills. Strong kickboxers seem to have very muscular builds where as jiu-jitsu fighters and wrestlers tend to be a little softer. I think they can make their weight work for them if they understand their place in size in comparison to other fighters and have good gameplan!
@gooberhead81 You nailed it man. It seems to me like outfighter strikers and BJJ artists have a similar body type, whereas infighters and wrestlers have the opposite body type. BJJ/striking guys like Diaz are lean and often have more fat because in BJJ it's harder to hold on to a fatter opponent. Wrestling/infighting guys seem to be more muscly because it demands less agility most of the time and more power. But dunno, Lesnar for one could really improve his striking if he dropped 15 pounds.

If you're three steps above the number one contender...Chances are, you've just beaten someone who beat everyone else to get to you which in turn pretty much makes the number 2 contender an easy fight. Simply not enough fighters to build up boxing records like 30 and 40 fights so it's hard to tell who is really best. Also, it's debatable if having huge records like that would be bad, what with the 4oz gloves and everything. Then again, Melvin Guillard has a TON of fights and is still healthy

@gooberhead81 The 4oz gloves are much healthier, because you can take less damage before you go down, so you don't have to take 100 shots before you go down. Plus 12 oz gloves are heavier, so it's his body weight + 12 oz hitting you and in MMA it's his body weight + 4 oz. It's like in tennis, even 10 grams can make the racquet uncontrollably powerful. My point is that MMA doesn't have any super athletes like better paid sports, who can dominate against all odds, like Pacquiao, Federer, etc.

I mean there are a lot of guys who look like amateur bodybuilders (Thiago Alves comes to mind)? Hopefully when the sport progresses and we see more 5 round matches/more well rounded fighters guys are gonna realize that it's more important to have great cardio/flexiblity/speed than pure power. @DestroyerAlexandros Some are definitely heavier than they need to be and would probably function better at a lower weight...I think sometimes the muscle is put on due to the effort put towards strengthening one set of skills. Strong kickboxers seem to have very muscular builds where as jiu-jitsu fighters and wrestlers tend to be a little softer. I think they can make their weight work for them if they understand their place in size in comparison to other fighters and have good gameplan!

@gooberhead81 You nailed it man. It seems to me like outfighter strikers and BJJ artists have a similar body type, whereas infighters and wrestlers have the opposite body type. BJJ/striking guys like Diaz are lean and often have more fat because in BJJ it's harder to hold on to a fatter opponent. Wrestling/infighting guys seem to be more muscly because it demands less agility most of the time and more power. But dunno, Lesnar for one could really improve his striking if he dropped 15 pounds.

I just want to know what kind of Guard GSP really has. He's supposedly a BJJ black belt but all anyone ever sees from him is his top game, partly because No One has been able to put him on his back and keep him there but i bet he's A LOT less of a threat off his back than he is with top control.
