  • Glad they didnt keep this tradition of going right into Evening Gown competition............strips the excitement right out of making the top ten...........esp. w/this music.

  • Kim Parrish of QVC and HSN fame was Miss West Virginia for 92.

  • Comment removed

  • judges saved the best for last again...

  • Kathie Lee still sucks to this day!

  • I know who Miss Nebraska was here and I think I spotted her. Her name now Natalie Tysdal of "KWGN/KDVR news in Denver"!

  • This pagent is so ridiculs! lol

  • According to Wikipedia- Robin Meade was a top ten finalist. Buts she's not in this video.

  • @vinceplano It was the year after this one.

  • @vinceplano She was a finalist a year earlier...

  • @vinceplano She's in the background and not in the top ten.

  • When she returned the next year to crown, Sapp looked like a hooker. Would have crowned Mississippi followed by Missouri. The only two who possessed both beauty and talent.

  • I have judged in the Miss America System for over 25 years--The 2010 pageant was a disgrace!! I was there all week --How they came up with that top 15 is beyond me--I would like to get some feed back --I know ll about the four points of the crown and i know they don't call Miss America a beauty queen anymore, However when i judge I refuse to send a unattractive girl to the next level America has plenty of pretty, and smart girls -Lets go find them!!!!

  • Truly bizarre - how did they learn to walk like this?!? And what old hags they look like, or is it the poor video quality?

  • @mitoguitarman They do look old huh. I'm so glad Miss America has had a true makeover here the last few years...

  • NY was the best talent i have ever seen at Miss America. i was there and it was the first 10 i have ever given

  • This is so TRUE.

Marisol Montalvo"s aria of :Aida" was Flawless.

I met her while she visited my high school and she performed and she encouraged students to the importance of Staying in School.

She is truly an AWESOME person.

Marisol is now a Gifted opera singer performing throughout the world.

Search her name on YouTube and you can see and hear perform.

  • Having taught Voice for many many years at Ohio State University I must agree CarolynSapp's talent was not oustanding--The young woman had know range--Nancy Hines Prof Of Music Ohio State University

  • So true, Carolyn Sapp"s singing talent was awful.

She only won because of her great figure.

Now, Marisol Montalvo , the 1st Runner_Up has a fabulous operatic voice.

Marisol now tours around the world with her soprano voice.

Type in her name on You Tube search to hear her sing.

  • miss hawaii was awesome. does anyone know where i can find her talent video? she sang "aint misbehavin."

  • Her talent was AWFUL !!! Why would you want to view it ?

Her swimsuit and evening gown presentation was what won her the crown.

  • Granted, it wasn't the best talent ever presented but it wasn't that bad.

  • I worked in the Atlantic City Convention Center for many years during pageant week and was there when Carolyn Sapp, Miss Hawaii won. Great show!

  • Laura Schaffer won in 1971. Remember - use to be - pageant held in Sept. 1971 - would be Miss America 1972, etc. Rather confusing. In 1985 - Honey Castro - Miss WA was 3rd runner up1

  • Evening gown scores (IMO): Missouri - 8 Mississippi - 9 Washington - 4 Texas - 5 New York - 5 Kansas - 7 Louisiana - 6 North Carolina - 7 Iowa - 8 Hawaii - 8
  • @jlemere Agree with you 100%.

  • LA's talent was awful - equally as bad as Sapp's, only less sexy. TX and NCs were atleast technically superior, after that is comes down to what style do you like.

  • and what, by chance is your talent?

  • I grew up watching the Miss America Pageant over the years and when this pageant happened, in my mind, I didn't know what I was watching. They should've titled it "Live with Regis & Kathie Lee featuring the Miss America Pageant". Why they picked these two to host this thing is beyond me because it looked like their daytime talk show.

  • When she walked out in that gown, I knew she would win - look how regal and absolutely gorgeous she is. Her talent was ok, passable - sexy and entertaining and better than NC, LA, TX in the top 10, so given that this is a beauty pageant - let the most beautiful girl win - plus she was charming and as we found out later - courageous.

  • @miloandtock1 But you're so wrong, Miss America is not a beauty pageant, it's a Scholarship Program...

  • @miloandtock1 No offense, but you can't understand how Miss America talent is adjudicated and think that Hawaii's talent was better than that of Texas or North Carolina. I'll give you Louisiana, though. Yes, I think Sapp was the obvious choice overall (in that era), looking lovely and regal in evening gown. But I'd wager that NC and KS scored pretty high in evening gown as well (along with MO, MS. And that would be my top five in EG, in this order: HI, KS, MO, MS, NC, then WA LA IA NY TX).

  • Personally, I liked NC and MO, with Missy Hurdle and Lisa Somodi next....Sapp only had the ss going for her. She was an awful interview and no talent. I think the T5 was set for Sapp to win....I was there that year in the audience. Really strange Top10 but definitely NOT a great Top 5.

  • If you are/ were any better, maybe you should not have been in the audience, but a representative of your state? The top 10 is comprised from previous scores, through prelim. competitions, i.e. interviews in which you do not see.

  • is Miss Washington the first Asian to make the Top 10 ?

  • No, I believe the first one was Keungsuk Kim, Miss Wisconsin in 1982, the year Elizabeth Ward won

  • No, there was an Asian woman in the Top 10 from Hawaii in Miss America 1971 pageant, the year that Pamela Anne Eldred won.

  • @latinoguy Miss Hawaii 1969, Sheryl Hung Lan Lokelani Akaka, was a top ten finalist the year Pam Eldred won, which, by the way, was 1970, NOT 1971

  • @socal0123 If I may respectfully disagree, there was a woman of Asian origin representing Hawaii (I believe her first name was Cheryl) who was Top Ten back in the 1970 pageant -- the year Pamela Eldred of Michigan won. Susan Anton, representing California, was also top ten and a runner-up. There used to be a video of it on here but it was removed.

  • No, there was an Asian woman in the Top 10 from Hawaii in the Miss America 1971 pageant, the year that Pamela Anne Eldred won.

  • Actually that was 1969....and the first Asian to place was in 1962, fourth runner-up to Jackie Mayer

  • Pamela Lee Anderson, Miss Hawaii, the first Asian to make the Top 5 was 2nd Runner UP in 1962 NOT fourth runner-up, as you stated.

  • @latinoguy PATRICIA Lei Anderson was 4th runner-up in 1962....Penny Lee Rudd, Miss Texas, was 2nd runner-up.....Susan Dee Pickering, Miss Hawaii 1963, was 2nd runner-up, but she was not asian.....

  • @czerena If Miss America is going to rebound we need to get more attractive girls in our pageant. America wants a pretty girl to be Miss America, and there is no reason why we can't--I want the Miss America to come back to the standards it once had.We ae going back on national ntwork television--Lets make it a truely outstanding event--I 'll always love the Miss America System

  • Carolynn Sapp was the best choice, she was the strongest in all the major categories except talent. She won the swimsuit category too. She is the most beautiful that year, no question about it, they made the right choice.

  • Think I heard or read somewhere that Carolyn Sapp was married to (now late) pro wrestler Brian Adams (aka Kona Crush of Demolition & DOA fame) who also hailed from Kona. They weren't married very long. Now I think she's married to former Olympic decathlete Dan O'Brien.

  • she was a better choice than NY..

  • Winner should have been Mississippi or Missouri. Sapp a phony joke.

  • What stupid thing to do. To combine the evening gown competition with the annoucement of the top 10...made no sense at all!

  • it was such a joke! really. but i think it was to cut down on time.

  • I liked this format, and now that the pageant has been whittled away to 2 hours, the MAO should go back to this format...It is highly dramatic, and it does save on time. LOVE the Cole Porter music...ahhh the good ole days of Miss America pagants...

  • Marisol Montalvo,Miss New York had clearly the Best Talent though she was not the prettiest and I loved Mary Allison Hurdle's (Miss.) different color bows on her hair. Robin Wassun (Kansas)and So Young Kim (washington) looked great in Evening Gown. The winner ( hawaii) was NOT deserving.

  • Who do you think should have won? It was a cut & dried Top 5 actually...Washington didn't have that 'spark', her piano talent was not nearly as good as Lisa Somodi's ( Miss Iowa), Swimsuit killed Miss Texas, Talent & Swimsuit killed Robbin Wasson, Miss Kansas, Talent killed Miss Louisiana, Swimsuit & Talent killed Miss North Carolina. I thought the judges did a really good job...Kathleen Battle happened to be a judge that year.

  • Since it is offically NOT a beauty pageant like Miss USA but a scholarship pageant,I would then have to say Miss New York.

Miss Hawaii had a poor talent.

Marisol Montalvo is now a professional opera singer touring around the world and sings in 4 languages.

Katleen battle was indeed one of the judges and I heard assisted her to get professional gigs.

Thanks for asking for my opinion.

  • Well, it really IS a beauty pageant AND a scholarship program. There is no argument that Marisol Montalvo had the best talent, however, this pageant is not JUST about talent. As fans, we do not get to see the interviews. Carolyn Sapp was extremely strong in every aspect but talent. As a local MAO judge, our job is to find the most 'well rounded' representative for the job, not just the most talented.I think if Kathleen Battle had not been a judge, I don't think Marisol would have placed as high.
