I recommend Knytt and Knytt Stories, they're so cute and filled with exploration... awesome little platformers with tons of addon-"stories" you can download for free, plus make your own. It's like Metroid or Castlevania meets The Moomin :)

Also, Wind And Water Puzzle Battles, a VERY well-made Tetris-style game, mostly reminds me of Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo. Brilliant asian-style art, you can tell they loved making it! :)

And iJi (by Remar Games) = best freeware 2d game EVER. EVER! 200%! :O

Alright, I take issue with your top 5 list. Here's why:

1. Toribash isn't freeware, it's shareware. You can't even play against another player unless you register (that's means paying for a license).

2. Mugen isn't so much a game as it is a game ENGINE. It could be tooled INTO a specific game with inspiration and talent at programming. But just because you have paper and a typewriter doesn't mean you have a book.
