A Congressional District can have between 600,000 and 1,000,000 people -- so those showing up at Town Hall meetings represent less than 1/10th of 1% & it's always easier on issues to get people out who're opposed to something than in favor of it.

Perhaps America doesn't understand REPRESENTATIVE government. Representatives are elected (and paid) to represent their constituents by reading, studying and learning about issues and then with this information doing what he/she feels is best for the district, state and country.

Only 1 Southern Senator voted for the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 - Ralph Yarborough of Texas - although most people in Texas opposed it at the time.
Geo Bush (the elder) then went to work to try to have Yarborough defeated.
The state was very unforgiving on the vote & has elected only Republicans since Yarborough.

well it depends on your point of view, delegates definitely do have to stand up for their cobnstituents but representatives can vote on their own conscience, they are elected as individuals not as delegates. Its an old conservative principle (started up by Burke) that a representative should act on his conscience and intellect rather than on the wants of his voters. we don't for automatons who'll only act in our interests, we vote for individuals who'll act in the interests of our country

A Congressional District can have between 600,000 and 1,000,000 people -- so those showing up at Town Hall meetings represent less than 1/10th of 1% & it's always easier on issues to get people out who're opposed to something than in favor of it.

might i point out that not ALL of his constituents are in the "room" at townhall meetings. Some of us have jobs, classes, children, and more to attend to. Health care is important, and if you like what your rep. has to say and you're short on time, your not obliged to go to a town hall... point being, town halls aren't perfect cross-sections of the district.

Single Payer is the way to go, but the Insurance Companies lobby is too powerful - and so it's not going to happen.
The CBS poll and Wall Street Journal poll indicate over 70% of the people want to at least have the Public Option, but again the Insurance Companies won't let that happen either.
And Barack doesn't have the guts to veto any bill which doesn't have the public option & that's pissing off many of his former supporters.

That's how this arrogant administration thinks; Massa just says it outright because he's either high on Obama dust (in which case somebody had better get him the memo about his leader's tanking poll numbers) or just plain stupid. The good people in New York who realize we live in a representative democracy know that if they elect someone to represent them in DC, and he betrays your trust, (and in this guy's case, ADMITS the intent to betray it on TV), then the representative must be replaced.
