I just discovered this movement and fell in love with the idea. It's an idea I've been trying to get through to everyone around me but never knew how. The Advent hit the nail on the head! I've actually been told I was rude for not wanting gifts this year and to instead, donate the money! What has happened to people! It's because of those kinds of reactions, that people feel they need to buy gifts or they're being "rude". Have we been blinded so much!?!
Spend your money on helping others, not another $60 video game for Jr. Believe me, if you involve the kids in your good will efforts, they will more than likely be glad to give up their Christmas presents. People are good at heart, and do not like to see others suffer, it is amazing what the human spirit is capable of when it is allowed to be free from the commerical routines that we've fallen into.
@lefthooklacey - you are right. We have been convinced over the years that we *need* to buy stuff for our kids or else they'd feel neglected, feel bad they got less stuff than their friends at school. I like this movement and hope it continues. We don't need over half the stuff we buy, so in a way its kind of a false economy anyway. Why continue to push a lie (that we need to buy all this stuff) just to support retailers' business?
otherwise gotten. People, that was the most rewarding thing I have ever done, and I will never spend another holiday any other way than volunteering. I can barely talk about it without welling up with tears. I'm ashamed that I have been so greedy and inconsiderate for 31 years. You don't have to feed an entire community, but do whatever you can, you life will be truely blessed because of it. It's not as hard as you think, and even if you don't have a lot of money, time can be just as valuable
I started my Advent early this year. This Thanksgiving, my mom, my two sisters, and several wonderful volunteers served a free Thanksgiving dinner to anyone that wanted to come. We advertised it on the radio, put up flyers etc. We fixed "to-go" plates with the left overs and went into the poorest, most dangerous neighborhoods we could find and gave out the plates. People came out of everywhere, one lady cried as we gave her barely clothed children a thanksgiving dinner they would not have
What is the name of this song!? I LOVE it!

PlayWithColour-
I agree, voice is what must be heard. Fearing to speak up...or thinking that others will, so I don't have to. Is what is wrong. People need to ACT.
