By heyday I was referring to the various inquisitions, witch trials and crusades, don;t try to marginalize those atrocities by saying it was only a small group of people and everyone else was just "following orders", thats seems to be what your trying to accomplish.
Today, in the US at least, the church has less authority then pre-revolutionary war years, you don't get beheaded for working on a sunday, or burned at the stake if someone says your a witch.

I never said "everyone else was just following orders". The facts are these: Take the inquisition, for instance. The entire enterprise was carried out by a relatively small group of clergy. As for witch trials, the entire puritan era claimed the lives of a mere 50 people accused of witchcraft. That is certainly 50 too many, but it is hardly the gigantic holocaust people often characterize it as.

As for the Crusades, these were hardly a one-way street. Many Christians died during that period at the hands of Muslim warriors. Not to mention the fact that the European Crusaders ultimately lost that war and went home.
As for today, Christians make up 80% of the population in the United States alone. This country would be a theocracy if we wanted it to be, but we don't, so it isn't.

The Spanish inquisition was carried out by a minority of radical clergy, not by Christians at large. And besides, most, if not all, of its victims were fellow Christians who happened to deviate from the tenants of the Roman Catholic Church at that time. Proto-Protestants, if you will.

Actually, Nazism is an excellent parallel. The Nazi party made up a very small percentage of the German population, but took control through various means even though they were in the extreme minority.
But either way, you are still missing my point. This "minority of radical clergy" does merely describe the guys at the top of the food chain, but the whole enchilada. The vast majority of Christendom had absolutely nothing to to with the Inquisition, even in a subservient capacity.

As for the "fantastical beliefs", it was an appeal to those same beliefs which eventually ended the Inquisition, as people began to realize that this radical contingent of clergy were not carrying out the doctrines of the faith which they espoused.
As for Leviticus, it says nothing about what a good Christian should do. It was written over 400 years before Christianity was ever conceived.

That idea of a ruler needing a strong support base is directly contradicted by history. During Hitler's reign only a tiny percentage of Germany's population were members of the Nazi party. And not even all Nazis approved of what Hitler was doing. Just look at Oskar Schindler.
So no, a leader does not always need the support of his people to get things done. And condemning all of Christendom for the Inquisition is like condemning all of Germany for the Third Reich.
