  • My all time favorite Jazz guitarist.

  • Wes is a genius, I learnt guitar at the age of 19......

  • da brennt nichts an. Wes= Jazzguitar Chef

  • all we need is a THUMB UP just like Wes!! =D

  • OK, I give up.

Can never play like this man.

Can Santa Claus provide a pair of hands like his for Xmas if you are very very good boy or girl or is such a gift not available?

    Please advise.

    N.O.Hope. (Jr.)

  • GENIAL, ESPETACULAR !!! Eu queria tocar assim !!!!

  • I don't really need to add anything to the other comments, but I want to just because Wes is so far beyond any other guitarist that it bears saying again. And the intro to his solo on this piece is ridiculous. I'm a pretty good player myself, but I couldn't get near Wes if I lived to be a thousand years old. Which is not likely.

  • Nossa!!! Esse timbre de acústica, essa linguagem com esse suing foi tudo o que eu sempre quis ouvir!!!!!!!!!!! Ele é o pai.

  • I mainly listen to metal, but this guy is a genius and his music is amazing. Sad he died young.

  • @METALdude1195 yeah man, I got all of this mans records and as much of the videos as i could get my hands on...one of my fav guitar players... I like the metal scene too but this guys sound is cool as hell no matter what ur into if you have an ear for whats good

  • Amazing!! This is what we may call the "rule of thumb" for jazz guitar playing.

  • What kills me is that Wes was on this planet for such a short time. And look at all the guitarists he inspired!

  • So fluent, so relaxed....awesome

  • This has to be my favorite thing ever

  • smooth. nice.

  • Many thousands of "rock" effects pedals have been produced, but this master shows a clean sound is best. He doesn't need enhancing by flangers, phasers, envelope filters, and so on. A Gibson, an amp, his technique and note choice are enough.

  • @Drblooter99 absolutely. I used to play with a "dirtier" sound, never really huge on effects, but do use them sparingly. But a nice clean sound is the best. Ironically, a REALLY GOOD clean sound is harder to find fooling around with the pickups and amp than distortion and a bunch of dumb pedals!

  • Here HE is ....WES wild....wild....WES The reality is that he IS a stepping stone in all of guitar Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel did it right before him AND right before those two were Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt BUT in all there is a sexy - coolness that ONLY WES MONTGOMERY has....had....and will forever more OWN....thank you WES your pal forever, Hollywood Joe

  • Beautiful. Thanks.

  • La preuve que le Pick (médiator) n'est pas indispensable :)

  • hey guys, please don't fight :) youtube has so much potential to be a meeting place of the minds, why not make it that way?

  • Everytime i watch Wes play i realise that the era for pure musicianship & talent is LONG gone. Replaced with the 'American Idol' era with its run of wannabes. Just look at this mans face...he is SO relaxed and even smiles whilst playing the most death defying lines. No grimacing..no false posing.

  • @taildragger53 You're just looking for love in all the wrong places, my friend. If you look to the mainstream, you'll find the mainstream. Look at artists like Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Tosin Abasi, Marty Friedman, Tommy Emmanuel, Etc. and those are only guitarists, there's a world of pure beautiful talent out there, it's just hidden in the shadows of the "false posing" as it always has been. Love the music that lives, don't mourn it's death prematurely! Peace.

  • badass man, badass ..oh, and Harold Mabern is still giggin ..

  • that must me gods thumb on earth

  • shred. hard.

  • the master!

  • obviously eight people never took music class in thier lives.

  • I'm normally a blues player who loves jazz, and I'm so happy for the whole community to see that one of the younger jazz musicians around won a grammy! She's hot, she's a bass player, and she's a college jazz student from berkley :P

  • うpありがとうございます。

    Wes MontgomeryのCDを収集する気になりました。

  • Dern it man , He must have the fastest thumb known to man!

  • If you can't see this mans genius you truly asleep.

  • If I could be granted a wish to play, for fifteen minutes, like anyone who ever lived, I would play like Wes..

  • I'm 44 but I remember when I was 17. I liked Wes at that age, too. Does that count?

  • insuperabile WES

  • My goodness can we quit grouping every teenager together and saying they're all pop and rap fans? I'm 14 and know plenty of kids, in jazz band and not, that are huge jazz fans. And stop putting down mainstream music, you may not like it, neither do I, but would you want someone putting down the music you listen to?

Well anyway, great song, great musician. 5 stars.

  • @NailsForDinner Thanks for writing the above. Now if only the adults could think this way.

  • @NailsForDinner Well said! I have a 17 and 20 year old and while they listen to hiphop and rock on their iPods, they also listen to my old vinyl, tapes, discs of the classics. I might not have given them their high IQ brains (LOL) but I gave them an appreciation for music of all kinds and from all eras. The other thing... I gave them choices of what they should *consider* listening to. "If you don't like something.... don't go on YouTube and criticize just to hear yourself talk...." Peace.

  • @micvelo Well I'm glad to hear you agree! Sounds like you're setting them on a good path.

  • @micvelo i listen to metal and i think this is amazing and im 16

  • @insanedude39 so what? shut up please.

  • @Syllerud people like you should die

  • @insanedude39 so what? Just shut up.

  • To all the 17-year-olds that hang around youtube watching videos of Linkin' Park or some other horrible band, and think that Kurt Cobain was the greatest guitarist ever: I hope you watch this.

  • @Alembic77Series1 I'm around 17... and I love jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery. I love jazz. Do you think that every single teenager out there like the sorry excuse of music that groups like Linkin Park put out?

  • @AYFTracks No I dont' , but then again not every 17 (year for example only) craves Linkin' Park, Blink, Korn and that ilk.

    Some actually crave talent.

  • @AYFTracks: Alemic, kudos for following your own path, a musically-different one than your peers. I did the same as a young man and have never regretted my choice to listen to classic jazz, soul, blues, etc. while my peers were listening to rap or metal or whatever. It's like entering a secret and beautiful world, discovering all of the wonderful music of the past. That's how I feel about it, anyway. You can't go wrong with Wes, that's for sure.

  • how could anyone dislike this video let alone 7 people

  • I propose a collective worship guitar!

  • Yeahhh.... hes my new favorite :]

  • LOVE this video! Unbelievable...a classic!! YES!!!

  • @tubeorvalve Yes, this is from the BBC TV show, Jazz 625. Look for the footage on Legends of Jazz Guitar DVD Vol. 1 and 2, among other places.

@sseklof The Jazz Icons DVD is also excellent, but the Jazz 625 concert isn't on there.

I love this concert so much that I spent a few years transcribing every note. Best thing I've ever done. :)

  • @WesMontgomeryBook could you please send tabs to me?

  • @WesMontgomeryBook Thanks for the info about 625. Also, I just received your book the other day and think it is excellent. Thanks so much for your efforts - a great service as well as a tribute to Wes.

  • @sseklof Thank you! The book was definitely a labor of love. I'm very glad you're enjoying it. :)

  • Jesus... Can anyone tell me if this is the show he did on BBC and if its possible to get this on DVD?

  • How could anybody be this good?! People like Wes just have the voice of God in them. The most effortless, coolest, hippest ... wow! He's just there. To jeszing1: You can find this on "Wes Montgomery Live in '65" DVD available from Amazon on the Jazz Icons label. Recorded in the Spring of 1965.

  • this is awesome

does anybody know where i can find melvin rhyne's version of this, with the organ doing the melody?

  • those who dislike this should just go die

  • Thumb up for his thumb downs!

  • Thumb up for his thump downs!

  • he WAS good...crazy crazy good..RIP

  • what year was this recorded?

  • How does he play like that with his thumb!?

  • To me, "self-taught" to the tune and caliber of Wes Montgomery simply means, intuitively he "understands" all those "notes" and can execute, accordingly, and beyond. Somehow, he was able to skip/transcend the "first step." I believe it's rightly called, "genius."

  • J lisining metal,but this is awesome!!!

  • Che roba !!! La sensazione e' l'uomo che cammina sull'acqua .

  • If he was self-taught, then he must have been a heck of a teacher. This is awesome. Thank you for uploading this!

  • Wes truly exemplifies the phrase guitar god !

  • Jazz guitar musician of the highest order!!

  • This guy is brilliant.

  • My favorite jazz guitar player of all time!!!! JL

  • Incredible to watch...those great lines just flow right out of him. Wow.

  • lovely!

  • is it just me or does that drummer look like blinkin' from robin hood men in tights?

  • @ledzeppelin4485 holy shit that does look like blinken

  • @zackattacktba you too pal...easy with the coke!

  • @ledzeppelin4485 Dude...please stop takin the drugs.

  • @terryshorn Thank god there are people that dont care what color a person is, but look at them for who they are...God Bless Wes!

  • Whaaaaaaaat!!??? this guy just picks with his THUMB!!!???? Legend....

  • @Swanneezthename Hendrix not technically good? What the crap are you smoking.

  • Who are the other players?

  • One day I'll be doing the same when I retire from the bus.

  • THE FIRE THUMB! :D

  • @victorthegroover ...Immense!

  • Top flight.

  • Man , Was Wes Great or What ?... Too bad he isn't still here for us to enjoy live.. At least some thought to preserve his memory with videos such as this...What a treat...The whole group is great...

  • Man , Was Wes Great or What ?... Too bad he isn't still here for us to enjoy live.. At least some thought to preserve his memory with videos such as this...What a treat...

  • watch at 1:50 to 2:10, closeups of his playing hand, he did it all with his thumb. He played with his thumb!

  • cool !

  • What fingering. ;-)))) Tantalizing to the soul, that is for sure. What magnificent Gems, A Dream would be to attend some fantastical concert like this with a truly Most Delicious Being that has shared these Gems and gave me these delicious memories. ;-) That I call showing LOVE. :-) <3 5:09 WHY are their faces so serious?? I would be laughing, throwing kisses, clapping, standing and on and on. Then looking up into his eyes tell him How priceless this moment was to me. XXXOOO Later~~~~~;-)

  • Who would have thought that anyone would write a song about Wild Bill Hickock's sidekick?

  • @abukamoon Good one! LOL

  • WE ARE NOT WORTHY of seeing the master in action!!

  • Everytime i watch this...i've got the same reaction:...WHOA !!!

I love this so much ....Fantastic feeling

And i've been listening Mr Wes for more than 25 years already.

  • @richardaixanatanya

I first heard of Wes in 1971 at Colony records in Manhattan when I was turned on to 'Beginnings' 33 1/3 LP (with his brothers on it). Reacquainted myself with his music VERY heavily in the past 3 years. Words are insufficient to describe what his music does to you...I play along with his cd's at least 4 days a week, and cant wait to get home to jam with his music.....its exhilhirating to say the least and I have gained drastically from these sessions...Long live Wes.

  • Charlie, Wes, Joe, Barney, umbelievable !

  • this guy only picks with his thumb...thats it... nuff said

  • just toking the midnight bong and then shit

  • Incredible god given talent along with the passion and desire to practice endlessly made Wes Montgomery! It's a shame he died young! His brilliant music survives! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • @cjoey39

That this TRUE genious and gentle man died so young is a tragedy and a loss for all who love music.....god rest his soul.....we miss you WES!

  • @cjoey39 Well said: "desire to practice endlessly". No one can get this good without hours of hard practising and playing, especially in a time when there were not so many guitar player from whom to get influences.

  • @cjoey39 Like many, many jazz musicians, Wes died young because he smoked a lot and ate shitty food (biscuits, pie, and homefried food). Please everyone learn from his errors.

  • Great talent alright!! But I don't agree with "god given", he just practiced a lot!! God doesn't exist by the way. Great music!!

  • @TarcisioCGoes I can't prove God exists or doesn't exist but I'm pretty sure about Wes Montgomery's "natural ability"! There are plenty of people that have practiced endlessly and yet are not good enough to carry Wes's guitar case. It is fantastic music and I am glad you enjoy it as much as me!

  • @cjoey39 1. What 2. When 3. How to play summarizes good musicianship. Education and practice can only cover the third part. The first two make what we call talent.

  • @TarcisioCGoes don't come on youtube preaching your own beliefs because there are so many people who would disagree. whether god exists or not, saying he doesn't is disrespectful to other people's opinion

  • @cjoey39 Undoubtedly the greatest guitarist ever, without any doubt. This is just unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this guy is a freak. how does he sweep pick with his thumb? how does he play the guitar at a 45 degree angle to his body? while smoking? with no theory? and his mouth never falls open?

  • @dressedtosmellgood

The man was GREAT....just a born genius. His tonal sense is incredible and uniquely creative. One thing I heard from Wes that actually made me laugh with glee was his various versions of "Jingles"...as a self challenge, the group plays this tune fast, faster and supersonic on different takes....I thought th first 2 were incredible until I heard the last one (on "Live From Belgium 1965")....and then I laughed with joy over this excercise ...it was SOOO great!

  • Playing with just your fingers like Wes does is so hard, (especially playing how he does) but from my experience it gives guitarists a WAYYY better tone.

  • Yeah, Wes- swinging his butt off... Love playing this tune.

  • jazz guitaR I find extremely boring...this is THE exception

  • Ah Ha! So this is where George Benson learnt his jazz guitar! Always heard of Wes, never seen anything of hime until now.. absolutely amazing!! Thanx You Tube!!!

  • Ratio of like:dislike for this very high 110:1!Enough said.! Classic stuff.

  • Looks like 5 people accidentally pressed thumbs down.

  • Damn, its such a pleasure to hear him playing.

  • yo! george benson looks like wes monte!

  • love this guy

  • jimmy lovelace on drums arther brown on bass harold mabern on piano adrian ingram wrote wes,s biography

  • Yes, this is Wes.

  • yes

  • What the hell is he playing? I'm a guitarist of quite a few years and I have no idea which scale this is, or how he's playing that fast with thumb pickings!

  • Thumbs up for the greatest thumb in jazz!

  • 0:43 , i never thought of that technique. switching the tone switch while playing.

  • ótimo som cara !!!! mas o youtube está travando no meio das músicas, com a barra já carregada !!!!! como asssim !!!!!

  • Is it a l-5?

  • His talent was so staggering that if this was literally the only film of him and the only recording of his music that existed in the entire world, and it popped up on YouTube only yesterday, we'd still look at this and go Holy COW....who the hell is this ?!? A MASTER.

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wes, your the best!!

  • @ericrob2112 Glad you like this but I personally think each tune I hear last from him is his 'BEST'.......guess that's why he is so phenomenal and gifted...no formal training, couldn't read music, etc, etc...only could play the balls off his guitar! PS...it must be genetic...his two brothers were awesome jazz artists as well. Pick up any Montgomery Brothers cd (Ebay) and enjoy!

  • quando vedo wes suonare capisco che cos'è la felicità

  • Can anyone identify the other members of the band? I'm curious, I don't recognize them by visual or aural....

  • Perhaps the pianist was Harold Mabern.

But I don't understand who other artists were :-D

  • incrivel, impresionante, irresistivel, maravilhso!!!!

this man is the other planet

ass: nandão ...... brasil - minas gerais - viçosa

  • man i rarely get ecstatic over music, but this song gives me tingles!! i gotta learn how to play this

  • The King

  • Wes = Master of jazz guitar!!

  • Comment removed

  • I love this music! Reminds me of chillin in the bookstores and reading snowboarding magazines!

  • does he ever use a pick? :D

  • nope.

  • he used a pick before his wife got angry from his sound so he used his thumb this is no shit!

  • @HermerTV hehe

  • once again being an old sailor I saw WES live at the 60s at Half Note in NYC

That was a cool venue very low key with great jazz acts , Al and ZOOT , Wes, and many I cant re3call this moment

  • Awesome. The real deal.

  • Has anyone made brilliant guitar playing look easier?

  • one of the most incredible guitar performances of all time, based on my limited knowledge.

  • Never got into Jazz before now. Just watched a video of Hendrix talking about influences and hearing Wes' name though, looked him up, and all I can say is wow, I've been missing a hell of a lot! It's a shame how many hobbyists nowadays stereotype Jazz as simplistic chordal music, when it had people fifty years ago who could go toe-to-toe with the guys people say nowadays are on "The pinnacle of virtuosic guitar technique"!

  • @pieman419 anyone who calls jazz simplistic should be forcefully castrated

  • @MetalTillDeth44 agreed!

  • @pieman419 Anyone that dismisses jazz as "simplistic chordal music" never heard jazz. That is insanely ignorant.

  • @pieman419 hey where can i see that jimi hendrix video?

  • @pieman419 Dont compare anything just relax and listen itll do the storytelling for ya ; )

  • @pieman419 you ain't kiddin man. in fact, the "virtuosos" of today like steve vai can only play really fast over top of one chord. it's kinda like drag racing compared to F1. in jazz you have to think much more and much faster to keep up. frankly, wes could kill any one of the so called virtuoso's of today.

  • @cavemanc Steve Who? LOL!!

  • @pieman419 This so-called "pinnacle of virtuosic guitar technique" that you are referring to is probably the preconceived notion that you are good at guitar when you play faster. Obviously this is not true. I would recommend looking up Django Reinhardt. It's a bit of a stretch from Wes Montgomery because Django plays a type of Jazz called "Gypsy Jazz"

  • @pieman419 Ah, yes../You have reached the beginning of the beginning.

  • @pieman419

Could you link the Hendrix's video where he talks about Wes, please?

  • @pieman419

Could you please link the Hendrix's video where he talks about Wes?

    Thanks

  • @pieman419 Whats the name of the video with hendrix talking about his influences,is it on youtube?

  • @pieman419

Welcome to a world despite the dumbing down as a last ditch effort by fools who greedily control the gullible, ignorant, and arrogant who would never want exposed many truths or evidences. Look up on youtube,"Olmecs of Mexico." Just the tip of an iceberg.

  • @pieman419 If you really want technique, check out the man Les Paul himself. Just wow

  • @pieman419 Some of the cats from back in the day can smoke some of these young guns on technique and muscality both

  • One of the best of all time!
