Really informative! Can't wait to start growing my own veg. I've come across a site which is really helpful if, like me, you want to start growing your own. Its:
I feel like a right idiot, I just thought I had to plant an onion and it would grow more onions, like a potato, but I just dug up the plant and there was nothing there! Then my neighbor told me that you are supposed to use the onion seeds :( oh well still have 6 garlic plants and one surviving potato plant.
last year my onions, bolted, and left me with basically seed onions for this year! Is there anything I can do to stop them bolting to seed, so I can get onions I can use?
You can do that but in my opinion they would not get any bigger as the onion is a member of the allium family and it produces the onion.bulb the first year and then the energy in that bulb is then used for flowering in the second year. So basically you are buying onion flower bulbs. So if you plant that onion it will most likely grow into a either a white or purple globe shaped flower. You could always grow it and let it flower and save the seed for the following year :)
They grow just one onion. You can harvest the seed but it may not be true to the variety you want. It is always good to buy new seed from a good source.
you can use a 'round-up' type of spray and plant afterword. Read the label on the spray to learn more. Most require at least 7 or more days after spraying before planting.
a couple of tips... first, plant what you love. You will not eat it, don't grow it. Second, understand your climate. If you live in Alaska, don't try to grow bananas. Know what grows in your area. Finally, ask for help. Go to your local garden center and ask questions. They know about the plants in your area and they will help you be successful.
Do you know if there would be a problem planting onions right now (mid May)? I'm in Georgia and didn't think I was going to do onions, but now i'm going to try. From what I've read starting a little late isn't necessarily bad, but I will just be behind. I bought a few nice looking sets and will be planting soon. Thanks for you videos.
Im gonna start a garden, in this economy you need one!

what is the best time of year to plant onion in Michigan?
jkch1012 8 months ago
This is probably an extremely novice question, but does a spring onion for a bulb and become a regular onion or does it just grow how it does

@jerrydff7 I just use mulch and it works fine
Strom63 1 year ago
@jerrydff7 I would pull the weeds by hand. Don't use round-up or any weed killer.
