@demoniack81 Thanks. I was afraid that my DIY bike stand will break under the weight, it was my first experience in arc welding :) That explains a strange pose and a choice of stage - it's easier to spin on lower ones when leaning forward.
For those who don't under stand how you can self excite a field coil, its because there is residual magnetism in the coils from use/ manufacturing, and testing of the unit in question, it can start out little, but once you start pumping in power (IE: mechanical motion) its able to amplify the little bit into usable power
How many alts have you burned up? yes self excitement is possible but the car battery normally hooked to these also act as a buffer, if you run with out one you will burn up your generator, However! What you say is true, all you haft to do is supply a proper capacitor of sufficient size instead of a battery from there you have two options, you can try the self excitement or you can "jump start" the unit by applying a 12V source and the removing it after the alt is supplying its own power.
@Thepockets88 I have only one, and it's still alive :) Sorry, I should have explained the wiring - a bulb, which lights up in this video, is connected between power output and excitation winding, limiting it's current to about 1.5 Amps (bulb's specs are 12V 10W, power spike is about 15 Volts), so the windings are safe. Primary output was used to charge a lead-acid battery (it's not connected on a video to demonstrate a fully autonomous start) and gives about 20A (max. current for the alt is 60A)
You're spinning too fast!
You should add one more multiplication stage, you get tired much faster if you spin at this speed
nice idea btw
