This is a great video presentation of one of my favourite paintings. I especially like how David portrayed Empress Josephine & her entourage. They look so gracious & charming in their appearance, like ballerinas.
Nowadays the original painting is on exposition on the Musée du Louvre.
There is an full sized-replica of it(also made by Jacques-Louis David)on exposition on the Versalhes Palace, where previously the original painting was betwen 1837 and 1889(time by wich was then transfered to where it is now).
One of my favorite of David's paintings. Thank you for uploading this. I especially like David's little self portrait on the second balcony, the one above Napoleon's mom. He's wearing black and sketching on a piece of paper... even though he didn't actually attend the coronation. But, of course, that sort of thing never stopped David. He's one of the biggest liars in art history.
Yes, he was. The French term for coronations is 'sacre', which is better translated as consecration, and used to describe also the consecration of bishops, altars, churches, ect. Kings were considered holy, so they were annointed.
Napoleon's coronation used a rite of his own creation. The Pope refused him the Imperial Coronation ceremony of the Holy Roman Emperor, which Napoleon wanted.
hoy día hay algún pintor capaz de realizar un cuadro de semejante envergadura y tan impresionante realismo quizá Barcelo o tapies que dicen que son unos genios de la pintura
Neo-Classicism dominated art in the 2nd 1/2 of the 18th. century and was said to have perpetuated classicism but as we examine the work of David in particular we see that it opposed the 3 point perspective long held as the way to depict space. His work was crucial in shaping the art of the 20th. century, including abstract art.
What a complicated coronation!
The music seems to leak the atmosphere of the consecration.

It's amazing to think that it would have taken two years to complete the painting, thanks for the detail in this video

I just now thought of something...........
Was Napoleon anointed with Chrism at his Coronation ?
Was it, therefore, an actual Consecration, or simply a Coronation ?

Napoleon crowned himself:
1 because the source of his power was the vote of the Senate, followed by that of the people.
2 The anointing was just to give the blessing of "the religion of the majority of Frenchmen".
3 According to the Concordat of 1802, a French bishop was supposed to crown him. By crowning himself Napoleon solved the debate.
