The fact is, you can build an amazing computer for less than half the price of Mac. Mac OS is practically a free piece of software, so don't give me "Yeah, but Mac OS is unique" bullshit. It's also incredibly outdated.
I believe Mac are for people who want a computer that just works. That's also actually quite basic. People who maybe don't actually understand how a computer works and would rather have less bother in maintenance. PC is better though, if you're a gamer. I would consider Mac for photo editing. But that is all.
they're just too expensive, i mean $1500 for a 11" 1.4Ghz dual core, 2GB ram and 64GB hdd is a rip-off. you can buy the same for under $300 from any other brands. don't get me wrong, i own an iPhone 4 and i was fine with paying $1000 for it ( yes, it's that much in my country ) because for what it offers the price isn't too high compared to similar products (SGS I was $700 at that time ) but the notebook prices are 4-5 times higher than similar hardware from competitors.
@bgioni 64GB HDD? What? That is an SSD, which unleashes tons of speed. Plus, you're also paying for first-class support, the awesome lightweight (this is important for students, a light laptop that offers no compromises, full (not netbook) keyboard, backlit keyboard), etc. PC fanboys need to stop looking at specs and specs only. Apple has the highest ratings for customer satisfaction and support for a reason. Because they advertise experience instead of specs.
@Nutz320 still not worth 5 times the price. not a fanboy, just stating the obvious. between the two of us you're the fanboy. P.S. important for students? i think the price might be more important for a student that most likely is already in alot of debt just to pay for tuition
@bgioni 5 times the price? I've heard of double, even triple the price and I'll let you have that, cause I can't be arsed fighting these myths all day. I enjoy my computer that's it. But I have to stop you at five times the price, that's pushing it. People who buy PCs (except for specialised purposes, e.g. Linux servers, gamers who enjoy customisability, etc.) are penny wise pound foolish, IMHO.
@Nutz320 those are the prices in my country. the cheapest apple laptop is 3999 RON which is $1191. I can get the same specs for $200-250 ( ok, not with a ssd but still, the ssd will only improve the loading time of the OS/applications so it's not THAT vital ) on any other brand.
P.S. i'm not a cheap-ass like you're insinuating, like i said i own an iPhone ( the price in my county was $1000 when i bought it ) and my desktop pc is almost $3000.
@bgioni I wasn't insinuating you as a chapass, sorry if it seemed that way and that offended you. Also, I don't think you can get the same specs for $200-$250. A lot of times PC manufacturers'll cut corners. E.g. they'll say the computer comes with 8GB RAM, but it'll come with low-speed or DDR2 or something.
@bgioni That was just an example, not the point. I just think people should judge for themselves after buying the computer. I have used Windows, as well as OS X and a few Linux distros in my time. I highly recommend OS X to almost anyone. A lot of people ignore OS X, since it's quite expensive to buy the h/w. I just think the high customer satisfaction and support ratings mean something. They are there for a reason. Especially customer satsifaction. Anyway, I say experiment.
@bgioni Also, specs matter even less when you consider that the OS has been made by Apple and is optimised for their h/w. I don't have the link anymore, but iPad graphics tested faster than Android tablets with faster GPUs.
@Nutz320 there are modded windows7 versions that run great even on 1Ghz and 256MB of RAM ( used one on my old for ~2 years and i can't say i ever had any issues ). I totally agree with the software argument but most people stay away from macs because of the prices. For example in my country minimum wage is $200 and most people earn ~$250-300/month so imagine how expensive a $1200+ notebook seems to us. The only person i EVER seen to own an apple notebook is an app dev. and got it free.
@bgioni That wage does put things into perspective. In that case, I'd recommend a PC definitely. I think if you are willing to put up with reading a few manuals/help guides, then Linux is the way to go. Windows has always given me issues back when I used it, but I hear W7 is really good. I wouldn't know. BTW, I didn't know that there were modded W7 versions to run on older hardware. That's interesting stuff. Thanks!
@bgioni BTW the SSD will speed up swap memory extremely. I'd probably wait for it to become cheaper, which is probably about to happen quite a bit real soon, since Apple bought an Israeli SSD company. They're obviously aggressive about it, so they're probably going to cut up world supply, like they did with the iOS devices screens and lower the prices while watching their competitors suffer. Apple has 80 bil in the bank. I hope they make their products cheaper.
If I had the choice between being gay and owning a Mac, I would rather be gay because if I owned a Mac, I would be both gay and own a horrible computer.
to answer that very first question: because people outside the US know macs are for fags and I don't blame them for not wanting to be like a bunch of american mac fags. CONGRATS, WORLD!!!! YOU ARE SMARTER THAN MOST AMERICANS!
I like everything about a Mac except the price and I will never buy one because of that. Maybe of i get it like o free computer from work or something I would take it :)
it is mainly because of TAXES, too much tax makes apple products (including MAC) too expensive resulting in its less popularity outside US. US is the key producer of those products that's why its cheaper there .. ^^ haha
@ck7EiS people are better educated outside of America, so they know their hardware and are wiser with money (so they wouldn't buy an overpriced computer with shitty hardware)
@ck7EiS Well since Apple products are made in China, theoretically you would be able to get one over there pretty cheap, so why aren't they popular in China? Mainly it's because most Americans lack this thing called common sense and would prefer to buy something based on looks or popularity instead of usability/productivity
I was using PCs for a decade and now I can fix anything and everything. But I'm just got tired using PCs, just got tired fixing things I could NOT be fixing if Microsoft would care about the end user just a little bit more. Just got tired. I was hoping that things will change for a loooong time, but they didn't. Now I'm a Mac and I'm NOT going back - life's too short to waste it on fixing somebody's poor design.
because they are expensive. when i was working in music studios we always used macs because pro tools is easier to handle on a mac, but they were really expensive tho
How come nobody here is mentioning how much of a piece of shit Windows is?
It's very, very buggy. I know Mac's are overpriced and proprietary as FUCK, but both Linux and OS X are Unix based and much faster and secure than Windows.
@DaGleese Most games use DirectX, which is made by Microsoft, hence these games only support Windows. I think the main reason Developers only develop to Windows is because most people use it, and porting games to OSX and Linux is a long, difficult process, and often the company will make more money if they just stick to Windows. I have to use Windows for a lot of things, but I prefer Linux when Possible.
@PerverseBannana The only reason most of the games coming out on PC even make it to the PC these days is because XBOX uses the same DX API's, so it's more trivial to port it to Windows. Microsoft were smart when they made XBOX run DX too. If it used something else then I'd be shocked to see even half the number of PC titles we get today being released (I mean cross platform releases).
@DaGleese UNIX doesn't do as much as Windows? Are you serious? UNIX essentially runs the world in some form or another, and even Windows Vista and 7 (and now 8) share a lot of UNIX like features when it comes to permission handling and so on. It has nothing to do with the capabilities of the platforms, it's the market share. Windows has more games because more people use it, simple as. Macs are getting more because more people are starting to use it, and with more capable hardware (% wise)
@PerverseBannana Apart from not being able to install OSX on whatever you like, it's actually far less locked down than Windows is. You can change pretty much any aspect of the entire system if you know Terminal commands. You need third party tools to change things at that kind of level in Windows. They're both proprietary, but OSX less so believe it or not. A lot of it is built on open source software and open standards which is how it plays nicely with other OS's in many networks for example.
This is so damn true.... Hell even apple used to admit it! Back in the 80's/90's their ad's actually said "The genius of mac is that you don't have to be a genius to use it" in other words, EVEN THEY will admit that macs are for dumb people.....
@Terryracoon You're reading into that is pretty skewed. Why is something being more difficult a GOOD thing? It isn't. The only reason you have geeks and so on claiming such things is because it makes their existence less important. I can give my mother an iPad and she knows how to use it almost instantly, I'd have to show her everything if I gave her a Windows machine or an Android tablet for example. The genius thing is you can do extremely complex things with very little effort. That's GOOD.
People outside the USA already know how crap mac's are even apples adverts target the less intelligent users of computers and also taking into account on a windows pc u can do MORE things than what u can do on a mac including playing brand new games on max settings!
@mrsoouter Newsflash. 90%+ of computer users aren't all that intelligent when it comes to computers. Not everyone is a geek who can tell you how many bits are in a byte, or even what they are. If you're whole reason for dismissing an entire platform is based entirely on games, you need to sort your life priorities out because there's more to life than playing games. Hell, even companies like Rooster Teeth who make the lions share of their income from game related stuff run entirely on Macs.
@TalesOfWar Im not saying that computers ARE intelligent... they are dumb machines in which the user need to tell it what to do and well consider this Windows have had a more stable platform which people all around the work are happy to work with regardless if they use it for business or gaming macs are not brilliant for gaming but yet again they are indeed good bundled with the software to create flash files, images and movies so whats your point?
@mrsoouter I never said computers were intelligent, I said most people using them aren't all that educated on their use. To most people they're a tool, nothing else, just like a toaster or a microwave, or even a car. They're a means to an end for some thing or another. Why should people settle for something more complex to use when there's better alternatives available? Also, you should look at the way Microsoft sold Windows in the 90's, that'll explain why it's so dominant. Nasty is one word.
@rodolfopellegrino well, judging by your poor grammar, lack of a real argument, and the general stupidity of your comment, i'll take it that you are about 12 years old and had mommy buy you a mac. great. i also take it that people like you are the same people that macs are aimed for; basically, retards. you're not helping to defend macs, kid.
@DemonKingNoctorno Okay, I get what you mean by saying that you are an art major and don't see the point in getting a MAC, but are you saying that all art schools are diploma mills such as the Art Institutes? Because if so, you couldn't have been further from being right. There are many accredited, well-respected colleges that specialize in the arts. School of Visual Arts is one of them and it's in no way affiliated with Ai or EDMC. It's also just as real a college as your university is.
@DemonKingNoctorno Laptops rarely last to 3 years because they get moved around and there are some very serious issues with heat build-up in small cases.
What kind of an idiot would throw away a computer because of virus issues?!? My laptops died because of hardware failure, not software issues. All three died from the same issues as well: as they got old their fans started to give out and the connection between the AC adapter and the motherboard wore out.
@DemonKingNoctorno As I pointed out, my Toshiba was a dud. I did not include it in the three I averaged because it was an outlier. The other three died at nearly the same time - clearly not a fluke.
I rage inside at all these soon to be college students saying, "I need a MAC laptop for school!" i'm sorry, but unless your major is some type of art or communications/media, YOU DON'T! In fact, even if you are going into some type of visual arts major, you might be better off with a PC depending on what area of art you're going into. When I did my pre-college program at School of Visual Arts, all of the computers in the computer animation labs were PCs.
@TutTutOpenSesame Most media courses in college use Macs, and you can install Windows on the same machine and have the best of both worlds. Remember, a lot of people install it on their Mac not because they love it, but because they use software that only runs on that OS. Plus, Macs are just nicer to use for those kind of things. The UI is more consistent and intuitive and aids in productivity more than Windows does. I get things done faster on Macs than Windows. Same tasks, same software.
@DemonKingNoctorno As I pointed out, laptops and desktops are apples to oranges. I've worked on a couple of the colored iMacs (bought around 1997) that were still in working order. Desktops just last longer.
There is a decent chance your mac was a dud, it happens. I had a Toshiba that died about a month out of warranty - life sometimes just happens like that. Look at the sample sizes: my experience was with 6 laptops, yours was with 2. Which do you think is more likely to be a fluke?
The only reason more and more ppl get MAC books are because of Iphones... Most don't even know why they need to get a Mac other than, oh this looks cool, and I already have an IPhone, might as well.
@daemon1129 That's how most people buy most things you know. They have a good experience with something else that company makes and then get something else they make and hope it's as nice an experience, which for many, it is. This isn't unique to Apple, they just happen to have a fairly tight product line up of very well designed (not just how they look, but how they function too) products that seamlessly integrate with one another. Less choice makes it more likely you choose something too.
I have to agree with you. EXCEPT, apple laptops are great. They are small and thin and the design is good. Also the trackpad is superior to any i've seen on a Windows. I'm not an apple fanboy. If Dell or HP could produce an equally as thin and attrative model with a multi-touch trackpad, I would buy it without hesitation. That said, iMacs etc are a total waste, windows desktops are superior.
@C3ment I love this comment so much. It seems this fella enjoys looking at his laptop more than using it cause its so thin and attractive a design. You know what is superior to any track pad by any manufacturer? A mouse.
I will even use the tiny terrible quality travel mice over a trackpad any day.
@alecness I will excuse your rudeness since I used to have that opinion myself. I can safely say that a multi-touch trackpad is superior to any mouse, and I cannot do without it anymore. I only use a mouse when gaming now (on my windows partition). The trackpad is responsive and multi-touch commands are very convenient.
Secondly, the portability of my macbook is great - it would be awful having to carry around a massive clunky windows laptop to college in my bag.
@C3ment The track pad/mouse argument is really just preferential so I'm going to drop that one. But calling a windows laptop "clunky" and massive is rather dumb. HP makes a comparable laptop, specs wise to a 15 inch macbook pro that its one quarter of an inch thicker and weighs less than one fifth of a pound heavier than the same macbook. Similar models by other manufacturers can be found too. Not really a big difference unless your have a small bag.
@alecness Fair enough, the track pad issue still stands. That is my reasoning for not buying a windows notebook. Also, I was brand fixated with apple back then 2 years ago. I am not anymore since they keep advertising their products as incredibly innovative, when they are actually minorly improved (or in some cases not) copies of pre-existing products.
Yeah, like WHY would anyone want to run Mac OSX on a Windows Machine. Also, besides iLIFE can ANYONE tell me what is worthwhile about a Mac that you need to pay TWICE the MONEY for 1/4 the PERFORMANCE. BTW Nero 10 does pretty much everything iLIFE does ... but BETTER.
There is a joke that can apply here, I'll try to translate it without it loosing anything:
- In the sixties, NASA sent a redneck into space together with the ape, the flight controller tells to Billy-bo-bob: "Ok, you want to ever come back to Earth alive? Feed the monkey and don't touch a goddamn thing"
Same can be aplied to Macs, "Use it, just don't try anything too complicated, like oh I dunno, install a new graphics card".
This is probably one of the most retarded comments I've ever heard used against apple users. I've used a windows since I was a kid, and still use windows 7 on a daily basis. I love my mac because I don't have to bullshit around with a lot of the stuff that I normally would on windows, however I think both windows and os x have the positive and negative qualities. I like both. ALSO.. a high IQ doesn't automatically equal intelligence.
Why can't people accept that there are other operating systems than the one they use. Just because you use that specific line of computers doesn't make all others inferior. I use Mac OSX as well as Windows XP (I prefer XP for it's simplicity and reliability).
I use both Macs and PCs, both have their own uses. I also have 'Parallels' that enables me to run Windows operating systems in windows on my Mac without rebooting.
People need to just accept the fact that nothing is best at everything.
There is just NOTHING that you can do on MAC that you can not do on a PC. That is why I fail to understand why should I pay at least twice as much for a MAC as I pay for a PC with literaly THE SAME components. After all MACs and PCs have the same processors, graphic cards, hard drives, ram sticks, etc. Hardware wise I can get a much better PC for the price of a MAC. OS X is NOT worth it.
@TheZwirek Indeed. As a small example, lets take the higher end models of Dell XPS 15: i7 740QM, 4GB@1333MHz RAM, GeForce GT 435M, 640GB@7200 RPM. It's half the fucking price of the lowest end model of MacBook Pro 15": Low-end i5, 4GB@1066MHz RAM, GeForce GT 330M, 320GB@5400 RPM.
Just pathetic. And the retards buying these pieces of shit are even more pathetic.
@CopyrightPropaganda No. No it isn't. A single CPU in a Mac Pro costs more than your entire rig. You're also missing the point of such machines. They're workstations, not desktops. Their purpose is to never be turned off and to have higher scalability and reliability than desktop machines. You can argue your machine can do the same things, and sure it can, but it won't be as stable, and if you did what the Mac Pro is actually MADE for with your machine, it'd crash from piled up errors.
Since Apple is too sketchy to provide a model number, I looked up a midrangeish Xeon @ 2.8 GHz on CPU Benchmarks, which had the approximate benchmark rating as my Phenoms. Also, my computer doesn't crash from "piled up errors", that's some obvious Apple/Intel fanboyism you're pulling. A computer does not just generate "errors", because that would contradict the point of how computers make no errors. High-end processors do tasks faster, though, but don't pull that copout crap on me.
I remember a couple years ago when there was a Mac edition of the EVGA GTX 285 for $100 more than the regular version. Same exact specs. Made me happy inside.
@KewlxMunky Macs use EFI rather than BIOS, and there's less machines to use them in, so it was a shorter production run. It tends to cost more for things that only have a very limited number. Eventually the PC world will catch up to Macs in terms of EFI on the GPU's like they've started to do with motherboards, so it'll be fairly trivial to use the same EFI based cards in PC's or Macs. It'll then be down to the card makers to make drivers.
and contrary to some people's beliefs, the world outside the US isn't a single third-world country where people worship statues, make $2 a day, llive in a dictatorship and like to strap explosives to their chests.
@LyRaLex haha You are delusional There are no believes here in the U.S. of the world being a third-world country and there is no reason to add your second comment.
-that it gives you the freedom to (legally) understand, improve and share software. Your destiny is in your hands, not the hands of giant corporations.
-the UNIX philosophy, which boils down to: computers are tools for making our lives easier - so the operating system should not stand in the way of automating tasks, combining software written by other people, or doing things previously unimagined.
If you don't care for these, Linux may not be for you.
@NobodyCanSpellMyName Funnily, the Mac OS X is too based on your so called "UNIX philosophy" with Darwin and the XNU kernel.
Your definition about Linux is hilarious. Any operating system that requires you to recompile the kernel in order to install a driver, or even just VM tools, is hardly "making our lives easier" or "not stand in the way of automating tasks". In that regard, even the OS X is indeed much better.
"Your destiny is in your hands, not the hands of giant corporations."
@LeoNatan25: No, you don't need to recompile the kernel to install a driver. Just load a kernel module. Apple and its oppressive iPhone development process is just one example of a giant corporation which has the final say over the softwate people can run on their phones.
Of course the Linux kernel itself doesn't adhere to the UNIX philosophy of modularity and clean interfaces so much, because getting it right is VERY hard. XNU tried the microkernel approach but failed spectacularly.
@LeoNatan25 Seriously.. this isn't the 90s dude. No one needs to recompile a kernel to add drivers to it anymore. I haven't compiled a kernel since my Slackware 2 days.
I was just about to write "I love Mac"... Wtf... I'm so fucking confused... What happened to me? I used to be sensible. Now my soon-to-be Mac is all I can talk about.... Why is this happening to me?! Why do I still want to buy it?
Oh wait... Because I can. By living of canned tuna for two moths... Why am I commenting again? Erh... Mac is for hippies. Goodbye.
I have a Macbook pro (1), running Mac OS X AND Windows (2), I am NOT Asain (3), I am NOT stupid (4), I am NOT AMERICAN! (5) and I bought the Macbook because I know they are expensive, but I bought it for the quality, and because they last longer than PC's (i.e. laptops).
@Kemp101010 macs more efficient than a pc? in what ways? :)) since you're a computer "expert" could you please tell me what's the difference between cpu and gpu? what is cache and what is buffer? how about FSB? ok if you never heard of these YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SPEAK ABOUT COMPUTERS!
@harvesterofsorrow111 Quite honestly I don't think I've ever used/seen a Linux computer, I know the exist but what's different about them? I'm posting this only because I want to be more knowledgeable about the Linux platform.
@Kemp101010 First of all Linux is 100% free unlike Mac or PC, second of all its 100% safe, go on to the most virus ridden site you know and it'll be fine, third of all Linux is extremely fast much much faster than Windows or Mac. Linux can be changed to look like whatever you want, theres even a version called Lindows that looks exactly like Windows XP the downside is a lot of software available for windows and mac isn't available for Linux but if you can use a command line it is by far the best
@Seferot228 It's harder to use properly, plus Microsoft have damn good marketers so they keep their share, Linux is a bit harder to use as well, plus you can't play games on it. Some software doesn't run on linux as well, but theres some damn amazing open source freeware plus to get the best out of a linux you should be decent with computers because it has a bit of configuration to it.
John Dvorak says, in effect, Mac users are too stupid to use windows machines.
He also said in the eighties in the general direction of Apple (true fact here, ladies and gentlemen): "There is no proof users want or would accept a pointing device called a mouse." (quoted from memory)
PCs and Macs are somewhat the same level here in Hong Kong. However it's quite bizarre to connect intelligence to technical preference. I've a pc for desktop (not off-the shelf for obvious reasons) and a mac for school.
lol i remembe this video when it had 4 comments and like 600 views, ps for the techincal record dell is shit asus is top, followed by toshiba then sony than apple on reliability. NEVER buy an hp, they have a 25% fail rate after 3 years
@olivenoire1 No, that's not right. I'm not talking about buying a bunch of computers in a network; I'm talking about buying a single Lenovo ThinkPad, or HP EliteBook, or Dell Precision for personal use. Much like Macs, they are very expensive. In return, however, you get a far better built machine with unmatched reliability which will last until you don't need it anymore. They also rarely have major design flaws, like the overheating in recent MBPs.
@olivenoire1 Consumer-level support on Windows PCs does suck. Business-level support, however, is a whole different story. Maybe you need to take your own advice? Trust me, because I actually have dealt with Apple's support. They're above average, but it's still not business-level.
@olivenoire1 I love Mac users who think that Macs are more reliable than all PCs. Seriously, you have got to be kidding. Two words: business lines. The business lines from Lenovo, Dell, and HP embarrass Macs in terms of overall quality and have far superior warranties and customer support (yes, WAY better than your overpriced AppleCare).

Why Macs are not as popular outside the USA ?
it is mainly because of TAXES, too much tax makes apple products (including MAC) too expensive resulting in its less popularity outside US. US is the key producer of those products that's why its cheaper there .. ^^ haha
ck7EiS 2 months ago
@ck7EiS people are better educated outside of America, so they know their hardware and are wiser with money (so they wouldn't buy an overpriced computer with shitty hardware)

ck7EiS 2 months ago
@ck7EiS Well since Apple products are made in China, theoretically you would be able to get one over there pretty cheap, so why aren't they popular in China? Mainly it's because most Americans lack this thing called common sense and would prefer to buy something based on looks or popularity instead of usability/productivity

@ck7EiS True, because of taxes, but Macs aren't made in the USA.

How come nobody here is mentioning how much of a piece of shit Windows is?
It's very, very buggy. I know Mac's are overpriced and proprietary as FUCK, but both Linux and OS X are Unix based and much faster and secure than Windows.
PerverseBannana 4 months ago
@PerverseBannana because unix based things dont really do as much as windows does
games are finally coming to mac through steam, but before that windows was pretty much the only os for anyone who is big into their gaming
and i still stick with windows for my gaming, because OSX wont run on my custom built rig, not to mention the majority of games STILL dont run on mac
and as for linux...... no gamesw work on linux... and if you say quake, then ill have to slap you!
DaGleese 4 months ago
@DaGleese Most games use DirectX, which is made by Microsoft, hence these games only support Windows. I think the main reason Developers only develop to Windows is because most people use it, and porting games to OSX and Linux is a long, difficult process, and often the company will make more money if they just stick to Windows. I have to use Windows for a lot of things, but I prefer Linux when Possible.
PerverseBannana 4 months ago
@PerverseBannana The only reason most of the games coming out on PC even make it to the PC these days is because XBOX uses the same DX API's, so it's more trivial to port it to Windows. Microsoft were smart when they made XBOX run DX too. If it used something else then I'd be shocked to see even half the number of PC titles we get today being released (I mean cross platform releases).
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
@DaGleese UNIX doesn't do as much as Windows? Are you serious? UNIX essentially runs the world in some form or another, and even Windows Vista and 7 (and now 8) share a lot of UNIX like features when it comes to permission handling and so on. It has nothing to do with the capabilities of the platforms, it's the market share. Windows has more games because more people use it, simple as. Macs are getting more because more people are starting to use it, and with more capable hardware (% wise)
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
@PerverseBannana Apart from not being able to install OSX on whatever you like, it's actually far less locked down than Windows is. You can change pretty much any aspect of the entire system if you know Terminal commands. You need third party tools to change things at that kind of level in Windows. They're both proprietary, but OSX less so believe it or not. A lot of it is built on open source software and open standards which is how it plays nicely with other OS's in many networks for example.
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
This is so damn true.... Hell even apple used to admit it! Back in the 80's/90's their ad's actually said "The genius of mac is that you don't have to be a genius to use it" in other words, EVEN THEY will admit that macs are for dumb people.....
Terryracoon 4 months ago
@Terryracoon You're reading into that is pretty skewed. Why is something being more difficult a GOOD thing? It isn't. The only reason you have geeks and so on claiming such things is because it makes their existence less important. I can give my mother an iPad and she knows how to use it almost instantly, I'd have to show her everything if I gave her a Windows machine or an Android tablet for example. The genius thing is you can do extremely complex things with very little effort. That's GOOD.

People outside the USA already know how crap mac's are even apples adverts target the less intelligent users of computers and also taking into account on a windows pc u can do MORE things than what u can do on a mac including playing brand new games on max settings!
mrsoouter 5 months ago
@mrsoouter Newsflash. 90%+ of computer users aren't all that intelligent when it comes to computers. Not everyone is a geek who can tell you how many bits are in a byte, or even what they are. If you're whole reason for dismissing an entire platform is based entirely on games, you need to sort your life priorities out because there's more to life than playing games. Hell, even companies like Rooster Teeth who make the lions share of their income from game related stuff run entirely on Macs.
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
@TalesOfWar Im not saying that computers ARE intelligent... they are dumb machines in which the user need to tell it what to do and well consider this Windows have had a more stable platform which people all around the work are happy to work with regardless if they use it for business or gaming macs are not brilliant for gaming but yet again they are indeed good bundled with the software to create flash files, images and movies so whats your point?
mrsoouter 4 months ago
@mrsoouter I never said computers were intelligent, I said most people using them aren't all that educated on their use. To most people they're a tool, nothing else, just like a toaster or a microwave, or even a car. They're a means to an end for some thing or another. Why should people settle for something more complex to use when there's better alternatives available? Also, you should look at the way Microsoft sold Windows in the 90's, that'll explain why it's so dominant. Nasty is one word.

TutTutOpenSesame 6 months ago
@DemonKingNoctorno Laptops rarely last to 3 years because they get moved around and there are some very serious issues with heat build-up in small cases.
What kind of an idiot would throw away a computer because of virus issues?!? My laptops died because of hardware failure, not software issues. All three died from the same issues as well: as they got old their fans started to give out and the connection between the AC adapter and the motherboard wore out.
fulanofeeds 6 months ago
@DemonKingNoctorno As I pointed out, my Toshiba was a dud. I did not include it in the three I averaged because it was an outlier. The other three died at nearly the same time - clearly not a fluke.
And for the record I said 'died', not 'crashed'
fulanofeeds 6 months ago
I rage inside at all these soon to be college students saying, "I need a MAC laptop for school!" i'm sorry, but unless your major is some type of art or communications/media, YOU DON'T! In fact, even if you are going into some type of visual arts major, you might be better off with a PC depending on what area of art you're going into. When I did my pre-college program at School of Visual Arts, all of the computers in the computer animation labs were PCs.
TutTutOpenSesame 6 months ago
@TutTutOpenSesame Most media courses in college use Macs, and you can install Windows on the same machine and have the best of both worlds. Remember, a lot of people install it on their Mac not because they love it, but because they use software that only runs on that OS. Plus, Macs are just nicer to use for those kind of things. The UI is more consistent and intuitive and aids in productivity more than Windows does. I get things done faster on Macs than Windows. Same tasks, same software.
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
@DemonKingNoctorno As I pointed out, laptops and desktops are apples to oranges. I've worked on a couple of the colored iMacs (bought around 1997) that were still in working order. Desktops just last longer.
There is a decent chance your mac was a dud, it happens. I had a Toshiba that died about a month out of warranty - life sometimes just happens like that. Look at the sample sizes: my experience was with 6 laptops, yours was with 2. Which do you think is more likely to be a fluke?
fulanofeeds 6 months ago
The only reason more and more ppl get MAC books are because of Iphones... Most don't even know why they need to get a Mac other than, oh this looks cool, and I already have an IPhone, might as well.
daemon1129 6 months ago
@daemon1129 That's how most people buy most things you know. They have a good experience with something else that company makes and then get something else they make and hope it's as nice an experience, which for many, it is. This isn't unique to Apple, they just happen to have a fairly tight product line up of very well designed (not just how they look, but how they function too) products that seamlessly integrate with one another. Less choice makes it more likely you choose something too.
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
I have to agree with you. EXCEPT, apple laptops are great. They are small and thin and the design is good. Also the trackpad is superior to any i've seen on a Windows. I'm not an apple fanboy. If Dell or HP could produce an equally as thin and attrative model with a multi-touch trackpad, I would buy it without hesitation. That said, iMacs etc are a total waste, windows desktops are superior.
C3ment 6 months ago
@C3ment I love this comment so much. It seems this fella enjoys looking at his laptop more than using it cause its so thin and attractive a design. You know what is superior to any track pad by any manufacturer? A mouse.
I will even use the tiny terrible quality travel mice over a trackpad any day.
alecness 6 months ago
@alecness I will excuse your rudeness since I used to have that opinion myself. I can safely say that a multi-touch trackpad is superior to any mouse, and I cannot do without it anymore. I only use a mouse when gaming now (on my windows partition). The trackpad is responsive and multi-touch commands are very convenient.
Secondly, the portability of my macbook is great - it would be awful having to carry around a massive clunky windows laptop to college in my bag.
C3ment 6 months ago
@C3ment The track pad/mouse argument is really just preferential so I'm going to drop that one. But calling a windows laptop "clunky" and massive is rather dumb. HP makes a comparable laptop, specs wise to a 15 inch macbook pro that its one quarter of an inch thicker and weighs less than one fifth of a pound heavier than the same macbook. Similar models by other manufacturers can be found too. Not really a big difference unless your have a small bag.
alecness 6 months ago
@alecness Fair enough, the track pad issue still stands. That is my reasoning for not buying a windows notebook. Also, I was brand fixated with apple back then 2 years ago. I am not anymore since they keep advertising their products as incredibly innovative, when they are actually minorly improved (or in some cases not) copies of pre-existing products.

CopyrightPropaganda 8 months ago
@CopyrightPropaganda No. No it isn't. A single CPU in a Mac Pro costs more than your entire rig. You're also missing the point of such machines. They're workstations, not desktops. Their purpose is to never be turned off and to have higher scalability and reliability than desktop machines. You can argue your machine can do the same things, and sure it can, but it won't be as stable, and if you did what the Mac Pro is actually MADE for with your machine, it'd crash from piled up errors.
TalesOfWar 4 months ago
@TalesOfWar

The greatest advantages of GNU/Linux are
-that it gives you the freedom to (legally) understand, improve and share software.
NobodyCanSpellMyName 1 year ago 4
@NobodyCanSpellMyName Funnily, the Mac OS X is too based on your so called "UNIX philosophy" with Darwin and the XNU kernel.
Your definition about Linux is hilarious. Any operating system that requires you to recompile the kernel in order to install a driver, or even just VM tools, is hardly "making our lives easier" or "not stand in the way of automating tasks". In that regard, even the OS X is indeed much better.
"Your destiny is in your hands, not the hands of giant corporations."
I lol'd.
LeoNatan25 1 year ago 6
@LeoNatan25: No, you don't need to recompile the kernel to install a driver. Just load a kernel module. Apple and its oppressive iPhone development process is just one example of a giant corporation which has the final say over the softwate people can run on their phones.
Of course the Linux kernel itself doesn't adhere to the UNIX philosophy of modularity and clean interfaces so much, because getting it right is VERY hard. XNU tried the microkernel approach but failed spectacularly.

Run Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and do all of my browsing and work on it.
Windows 7 x64-bit on my desktop for gaming and Rosetta Stone.

John Dvorak says, in effect, Mac users are too stupid to use windows machines.
He also said in the eighties in the general direction of Apple (true fact here, ladies and gentlemen): "There is no proof users want or would accept a pointing device called a mouse." (quoted from memory)
Thank you, John.
I said, thank you, John.
You can sit down now.

@Majik47 no, he said mac users are too stupid to use a non-mac OS. He could be rocking red hat on his upgradeable, non proprietary non-shit PC.

@fenderkid6 Can't see the diff to what I said, really.

@Majik47 well, you were ruling out the possibility of other OSes. Linux is bigger than mac, especially for corporate servers.

Hey now... Macs are cool too, just... you know, they're like the "Fisher Price" of computers, is all lol

@olivenoire1 your girlfriend has better taste in computers than you, how embarassing

I need to get an all-in-one computer...
