The View = Zizek without the Slovenian accent. Right, because they secretly spend their time reading and re-reading Lacan, Hegel, Foucault, and others rather than brainless dime-novels. Here's the clue: criticizing the speaker rather than the argument is the principle sign of ideological weakness.
I'm totally behind Zizek on the broad strokes. Worth pointing out, however, perhaps, that the history of Afghanistan's 'fundamentalisation' is a bit more complicated than he suggests. Yes, it was pretty westernised in the 50s, 60s and 70s, but this was in a large measure because of American cultural and technological missionary activity and there was always tension with trad Islam. See Adam Curtis BBC blog for much more (fascinating) detail.
I can't pretend to concur with Zizek about all things, but I do enjoy his flagrant enthusiasm. I've spoken with him a couple of times, and what fascinates me with him is so many who have espoused similar views have been consumed by their cynicism. Only a formidable constitution prevents a person from self-annihilation by cynicism.
I never get to see Zizek on American TV. This depresses me. That the American public sphere self-regulates intelligent nuanced debate to the point where anything outside of the "Jersey Shore" context becomes too esoteric to understand.
@TheTriptamineDream Yea, America keeps its people dumb, it's hard (for me) to conversate on a reasonable level with most Americans because they are not given easy access to proper education or what is going on in the modern world...
@frankythered come to Germany and try having a reasonable conversation about politics - you might get looked at funny and asked why you aren't talking about guy's junk..
@parkt6792 Think that's the case in almost every country :), the difference in America is that schools actually make an important part of their income from letting corporations advertise. Sadly those corporations(eg Mcdonalds) shouldn't really be influencing children. Americans aren't born stupid, the system they live in makes them stupid, sadly...
@frankythered What? You're making a huge illogical leap, from advertising in schools (which I don't believe is the case, i.e. income, number of advertisements, etc.), to talking about 'the system' making 'Americans' stupid. Tell me about 'the system' and how it differs from Europe. Europeans have America beat in languages.. and as far as I can tell that's about it. They're walking around breathing with their mouths open, trying to get laid, all the rest, - that there's a huge difference is bs
@parkt6792 The system in America imo are the media and the government and everyone that they have an effect on(eg, schools).
How this differs from Europe is that the system is in Europe is less money-driven, I can't talk for the whole of Europe. But here in Belgium politicians dont seem to lobbied to dead, basicly our country is stuck because they're so stubborn -,-. Another example media wise...
@frankythered When Russia and Georgia had their little war, America would portray it as THE RUSSIANS ARE BADDDDD while the Belgian media would actually give objective information about both countries without swaying to one side. If a news anchor is going to take opinions on which countries are good or bad then you know enough.
@frankythered But to be completely honest I don't know that much about anything thats going on in the world, but from my experience having a rational conversation with an American is far harder than people from Europe/Asia, and I've talked to some people. And I'm not saying that all Americans are stupid, but those that aren't will usually confirm my POV.
@frankythered Have you lived in the United States for a number of years? No? But you do know what you're talking about, right? Of course there are things that I don't like about the U.S., but there are other things that I love - such as a 'real' freedom of speech, having a real chance to make it to the top if you work hard and not being constrained by family and social ties in companies, not enough room in yt comment box..
@frankythered But I was disappointed when I came to Europe and found that there isn't some 'enlightened' young population here or something.. After all, I had always been told by the liberal side of the media that Americans are stupid and Europeans are these bright lights.. This is simply not the case. People say Americans are racist? People here hold many racist opinions, that they keep very well hidden. One thing I've found, Europeans are full of stereotypes about the U.S.,
@frankythered and over and over, I have the experience of someone relaying an opinion to me that is based on a movie they saw. My experience (almost 3 years in Germany) has very much taught me that the view of the U.S. as given by movies and the media have been bought by the young European generation hook, line and sinker. I very much don't like much of the American media machine, but you will never see anti-Europeanism in Time magazine like you see anti-Americanism in der Spiegel
@parkt6792 What do you mean by real freedom of speech?I'm not fully aware how Americans have any more if any more freedom of speech than we Europeans do.
I don't think I started believing Americans are more stupid because of that movie I saw, it's because of what I've experienced. And you're right, the amount of Europeans that are stupid is not low either but in comparison America still takes home the bacon.Btw its statistically proven that Americans have the lowest IQ of the develpd countries
@frankythered Your 'statistical' claim is dubious - did you know that 93% of statistics were made up on the spot? Belgium, neutral during WWII has quite a history of Nazi collaboration that has been mostly ignored. For ex., 'Real' freedom of speech means you can claim the Armenian genocide doesn't give the full story (which I disagree with), - which is now against the law in France. Germany - many restrictions. It has a 'chilling effect' and a 'self-censorship' effect
@frankythered And believe me, having lived in Germany for almost 3 years, when I came here I would have said the same thing about the U.S., - lots of 'less enlightened' folks.. The same things that would have led me to have said such things (and 'puffing' myself up at the same time, which is kind of what we're both doing here btw), I would say about Europe. It's easy to talk about broad swaths of people in the positive or negative, and this is what leads to prejudice and discrimination..
@parkt6792 Then how can you explain that I don't have these thoughts about people in the Middle-east, Asia, Russia, Africa. What do the Americans do different that makes me believe that they are stupid when they really aren't.
@frankythered There are actually rather large percentages of Germans who would support the death penalty in cases of the most extreme proven violence, I'm sure many in Norway would approve of the death penalty for Breivik, but to even talk about the possibility in the public realm is 'verboten' and socially unacceptable. Anti-Americanism is the lingua franca in Europe (Andrei Markovits), and it seems more and more socially unacceptable to speak publicly in the positive about the United States..
@parkt6792 Perhaps you are right, but perhaps you aren't and perhaps you should check out multiple surveys/studies and decide if anyone of them is credible enough for you to believe that Americans are in fact getting smarter slower than the rest of the world.
@frankythered I'll be walking down the street, and I'll overhear someone say "..America.." - Europeans are obsessed with it! Europeans believe they have the most superior culture in the world, and in many ways this is true (that's partially why I'm here), but for guidance in the modern world, Europe looks to America (def not the other way around), and Europe feels guilty about this - after all, Europe is supposedly superior! So, to compensate, an attitude of selective anti Americanism is adopted
@parkt6792 Yea this is what I've always found strange, how can Americans be so powerful when they are so stupid. But the fact that we're not superior doesn't mean that we're more stupid ;) and the fact that Americans don't look up to other civilizations only indicates that their superiority won't last for many years to come. But this is sort of off topic.
@frankythered But you also have to understand what you are saying. To say that a group of people, doesn't matter who or how big or small, is inherently 'less intelligent' than your own group, than you have adopted de facto a bigoted view not unlike racism or anti-Semitism,that these people are somehow 'less human' than you. Even though such views are 'socially acceptable' in Europe, don't fool yourself into thinking such views are not bigoted (they're all fat, stupid, etc.). Zizek would agree w me
@parkt6792 I am saying Americans are stupid but what I really mean most Americans are stupid than most people in the world, not saying there aren't any supersmart American people. Americans are stupid, thats a fact not an accusation. Also, your arguments are becoming more and more personal, not really proving the main point.
@frankythered "Americans are stupid, thats a fact not an accusation." Show me the "evidence" there fella, I'm a big boy and have access to any academic journal so all I would need would be the author, title, journal title, and month/year of publication. Or let me guess - you're basing your opinion on other people's opinions. This is the kind of hidden prejudice that I have to deal with as an American in Europe, not with everybody though, there are some really great prejudice-free people here..
@parkt6792 Google, why your kids are probably dumber than belgians, first link. Also look up the research of Richard flynn via EBSCOHOST or whatever you use.

@parkt6792 If you don't think that being 2 points of the median isn't a big deal(for one of the most advanced countries in the world) then so be it, but if there's a reason for them being 2 percent off than it will not get better(flynn effect) considering the countries below the USA actually still need to go through lots of development.
@frankythered Ok, I'm going to stop responding to you. You obviously just googled a few things and used them as references as though you had known about their existence beforehand. Now, it is wonderful for me to be here and far far away from American media, television, the whole bit. Based on media reports, I understand why you may feel the way you do. But there's also a reason Zizek said "if a German wants to understand Hegel, he goes to (Uni) Pittsburgh, not Germany"
Sorry the greatest country in the world can not quench your thirst for America Bashing. Drink some cough syrup and watch "The View". Same idiots, different accent.
they introduce Zizek as 'controversial' - who exactly thinks he's controversial and why? He has a very sound foundation in Hegel, Lacan and Marx, so this statement would seem strange in those people who have read the works of these people - I'm assuming his critics are mainly basing their comments on misunderstanding
stalin and hitler were socialists, occult, atheist, both direct tools of satan... what hitler first have done was to remove crosses from classrooms when he enter austria, he was destroyer of western civilisation trying to remove christ and jews out of public tryin to promote no mercy socialism... destroyer of western judeo-chrisitan civilisation, he was good with islam, same today, socialism and islam trying to unite
you know and i know, that 15 years ago serbs for example would kill all the muslims in the world if they could. and not because they would support socialism, but because they are christians with bad historical experience.
and there are also lots of examples where some leaders or nations wanted to kill milions of people (and were defenetly not for socialists), they just didnt have enough power to do that...
@TOTENKOF nooo, milosevic was atheist commie again and in socialist party, only in socialism people can t stop idiots to start killing people, in capitalism u make of them slaves but u do t kill them, today in capitalism usa made of concquerd people spenders, but socialism can only set working camp for those u are not perfect for socialist paradise by race or class and socialism can kill, they do t know how to use people
@udical I think you are generalising what's happening in Egypt. Is it the same thing in USA, India, China, Afghanistan..? I doubt. What you are viewing/ or viewed in Egypt is an event local to Arab world. Both socialists and islamist happened to be on the same oppressed side, it's only logical to stand together.
@lonelyvlogger yep ur right, i respect every right to association, but i do t like collectivist hierarchy , that s easy way for any Satan worshiper on top to have his evil decision in power directly from above, i agree today biggest problem is that big capitalists are destroying free market and free capitalism be cause they forbid right to people to have their capital (their own hands and work) to be reocognized as capital also
@udical "Satan worshiper" that's a bit rude to associate an atheist with :) and I doubt the possibility of egypt getting another satan worshiper at the top, haven't they toppled one just now. Yes socialist have a bad reputation these days horrors of past don't fade easily but don't you think free market is the capitalist equivalent of socialist idea of utopia, both nothing mirage. lets us just appreciate the shimmering light in this dark tunnel of arabian democracy?
what a waste, such a brilliant mind spending all his energy on the stupid human rights, universalism and the rest of the bullshit...come on Slavoj!

and defenetly not on for example religion?
you know and i know, that 15 years ago serbs for example would kill all the muslims in the world if they could. and not because they would support socialism, but because they are christians with bad historical experience.
and there are also lots of examples where some leaders or nations wanted to kill milions of people (and were defenetly not for socialists), they just didnt have enough power to do that...
