  • Correction.I should have said "affliction".Those kind of roles are known as "sympathy"roles.

Every actor's dream.I must say Anne Baxter excelled in this film and well deserved her

    award.

  • When Marlena Dietrich was asked why she never won an Oscar she said it was because

she never played anybody with an infliction.Look at the history of the winner's roles and

you will see why she said it.

  • Gene Tierney was not upstaged. Each played the scene as required.Of course it was Anne

Baxter's moment to shine. It was written that way.How could the attention not go to her?

Gene had several brilliant scenes in this film. She was a wonderful, intelligent actress, much

loved and missed by many.I'm sad that anybody would belittle that beautiful human being

who worked so professionally while enduring so much.

  • Well, folks . . . for those of you who haven't read the book, when Sophie says her greasy, froggy "MECK" (look it up), is 'Quite A MAN!", what Maugham originally wrote was, "Christ---what a SCREW!"

If the Tea Party Loonies ever take power, we'll have to endure this type of ridiculous censorship once again. Think about it when you're in the voting booth next year.

  • when an actress completely outstages a "star"; Baxter makes Tierney look like a piece of cardboard from the set; is this the same Baxter who overacted so much as Pharaoh's daughter in The Ten Commandments? hard to believe. My dad was in love with Tierney's Laura but I don't like her as an actress

  • i love anne baxter's voice

  • her hair style makes her more beautiful

  • Although I loved Gene Tierney in this and the rest of the cast -- one of Power's best films of this period -- Anne Baxter was the standout. How can one not watch this film and not love Sophie, and feel empathy and compassion for her pain.

  • Try any Somerset Maugham…

  • the book was fantastic.

  • Try the Moon and Sixpence..

  • The beginning of the end for Sophie

  • NOT A CRITIC... But having grown up in Los Angeles has left its mark. I deem this movie to be one of the greatest cinematic efforts in the history of film making. It is an amazing experience. Thanx 4 the post, brycepolwarth! Merci Beaucoup.

  • Anne Baxter--beautiful.

  • i remember seeing this movie as a young boy. my mother loved old movies. this scene devastated me as a youngster.

  • Wow this is great... first i saw the Bill Murray movie, which i loved, then read the book, now heres another movie !

  • anne baxter..unforgetable actress

  • @liz23clau Great authentic actress plus the extreme beauty to go along with it. Oscar worthy always!

  • anne baxter is mezmerizing. She is full on in her intent AND PURPOSE. Not a false note.

  • Love every bit of this movie. Does anyone know the title of the song? Is it available anywhere?

  • Read the book. It was brilliant all those years ago when it was first published and it is still brilliant today..Does anyone have any clips of Somerset-Maugham being interviewed?

  • This was hardly a dull movie! I found most of the performances have held up. Anne Baxters boarders on over the top.

  • I loved Anne Baxter in the role of Sophie. Anne Baxter won a much deserved Academy Award for her supporting role in this rather sometimes dull movie.

  • Let's not forget Miss Baxter won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this role!!!!

  • I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my latest one on some 1930's movie star tobacco cards, including Tyrone Power, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, Johnny Davis, Mickey Rooney, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Joan Crawford...

  • Great movie not a weak link in the cast from the two leads Tierney and Power, and supportng cast Baxter .
