very good technically. Absolutely no emotional connection. That is difficult to do with this piece. I have played it and directed it many times. The emotion is just as important as the technique.
i played this with my chamber orchestra, listening to it is only second to playing it. the atonality and dissonance is so beautiful, in such an amazing way. the sound and feeling swells up and then just bursts in the most beautiful way. Great job with this performance, i've played in quartets before and the members seem very cohesive as a group, so glad you posted this!
@ 6:34 - one of the most hair-raising moments in all the quartet literature: the eruption of delirious Jewish folksong material out of a roiling chaos...very exciting performance; I'd like to see the/hear Quartet that won.
guys! beginning MUST be without vibrato!!! believe,i've studied quartet with ''Shostakovich quartet'' for 5 years in Moscow. eh,...... to long to explain all staff
too clean. That 's really really bad for this piece. This piece was a time of ruckus and chaos. War basically. Babies being eaten. Irrational killing. frantic people. You should be able to hear the core of the string, not the ring. Meaning occasional crunch.
Good point. but this recording is wonderful anyways. the added noise fuzz, the low volume and extreme echo give it a ghostly timeless feel. Like walking through war torn Stalingrad at night in the rain after a miserable day at the front.
9801897 (lol nice username : ) i agree, if you have heard other videos you will notice how natural this is. its supossed to have alot of accedental and sound even more harsh then it already is. overall its a good performance anway
agree with the other comments about the first mvt id like to hear the inner parts a little more in the second mvt. why doenst anyone ever play the other mvts? could possibly be heavier on the accents as well. good job though
GOOD JOB JOEEEEE

very sound technique-wise, but i think there needs to be more energy to make it exciting.

i think theres too much resonance in this hall for the second movement to sound good. just an opinion.

um maybe they like the vibrato at the beginning huh
keepitacrime 2 years ago
That's just a suggestion. It's not a 'MUST'. I'd prefer a slight occasional vibrato.
jjyooo11 2 years ago
that guys r to yong to understand. same like u.
smolinka1980 2 years ago
Music is about the performers' interpretations. Shostakovich had nothing in the score that said 'No vibrato'. Stop acting all-knowing.

i like to play all autentic. wish u too.

the other two movements are posted, but the videos just got split up.

Too slow. Just to slow. They meandered through the first movement. 3/5
cckchang 4 years ago
too much vibrato. this is shostakovich, not schumann
ashaam 4 years ago 2
They take it too slowly. Other than that, it's a very nice performance. Shame about the poor sound quality, but I guess that's what the CD's are for.
