  • @irenikus777 Real operas are performed without the use of microphones, as a true singer of the genre will soar above the orchestra.

  • I love it the best voice in the planet

  • @mikewill9511 3 octaves is pretty nice for opera.

  • @mikewill9511

I keep seeing you posting in Tarja videos and try to invent all kind of wacky motives. She has too much power or is too soft, her range is too small and so on.

    Are you obsessed or something?

Tarja had her first apearance at state opera at age 19. Without microphone if that's so important for you.

Her live range is above 3 octaves, ranging from dramatic mezzo, to spinto and into coloratura.

Actually it's identical with Callas and above Netrebko for eg.

    ->>

  • @mikewill9511

->> Some of her songs (In for a kill for eg) range over 2.5 octaves in a single phrase. Like in bel canto.

So wtf are we talking about here?

Also I noticed you repeat obsesively that you are a classical singer. Are you someone of reknown? Having a permanent contract as a soloist at the opera?

If not - again - I don't know what are we talking about here.

Your knowledge should shine from your words and knowledge, it does not need advertising.

  • lol there's a little girl screaming and crying at 2:10 and she keeps screaming xD

  • @Supernature06 Opera singers don't need microphones in opera houses, meaning they don't use it when they perform in propper sized places which are also designed to have excellent acoustic resonance. Even the most experienced opera singer wouldn't be able to sing in a venue like this without using a microphone. Also Tarja is specialized in chamber music, not opera.

  • @Supernature06 fuck you 100000 times

  • 15 people don't appreciate classical music.

  • ohh.. that explains why there are a few people watching her singing.

  • tarja is suuuuupppppppppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr

  • @BleedTheWineUnholy how do you know she wouldn't become famous? first of all she never said she was studying opera but classical singing that is something different. and also who can assure us that she wouldn't become famous without Nightwish?

  • @IvanTsarina Classical singing encompasses several styles, one of which is opera. She DOES sing operatically and has some operatic training, but not enough to be an opera singer. She herself has said she wouldn't be able to sing opera properly with the limited training she has. Aside from not having the training necessary, her range isn't as great as many people seem to believe it to be. And I didn't say she wouldn't have been famous at all, I said she wouldn't have been a famous OPERA singer.

  • @BleedTheWineUnholy you are so sure about facts that haven't even happened! Of course she hasn't taken the necessary training to become an opera singer but what if she had taken it.. again who can assure us that she wouldnt be famous?

Maria Callas' range was of 3 octaves. Was she not able to sing opera with her range? Tarja's range is also of 3 octaves

  • I love hear it. Tarja, you are THE BEST.

  • hmm... just noticed that she's singing in swedish... I didn't know she could speak any swedish :)

  • Tarja rules as always did. <3

  • Wow, la tercera interpretacion es genial.

  • I thought she was supposed to finnish she's opera singing studies in Germany around year 2002. Wether she's good or bad opera singer I can't tell but never the less she deserves to be called a opera singer.

  • @enosavo She has never studied opera. Her own words "Everybody should know that I am not a professional opera singer. I am far away from being that and I have never said I would be alike. I have never specialised myself in Opera. I studied specifically chamber music singing. I have a lot of respect for real Opera singers." Her chamber music singing isn't as good as that of strictly classical musicians maybe because all this pop singing hurt her voice.

  • @jewelmarkess Well the info about her finnishing her opera studies in Germany wasn't just something I made up my self. It was taken from official Nightwish web site which is unfortunately in finnish so i'm not able to make any direct citations. My appologies if I was giving false info.

  • I saw a video in Youtube were she was being interviewed and someone asked her about Opera. She said she has been asked by the Finnish National Opera before to perform with them. And she did acknowledge that if she were to do Opera, she would have to work on her technique. But for now she wants to do what she's doing with her solo career. :-) Personally I love it when she sings operatically.

  • Opera is not only about the voice as potential...it's about technique, breath control, sometimes vibrato control, agility and generally, a lot to study; there is a large repertoire and there are many types of soprano voices(lyric, lyrico-spinto, dramatic, lyric coloratura, dramatic coloratura, lyric d'agilita, dramatic d'agilita etc). Tarja is a full lyric soprano but she's not an opera singer because she doesn't have any of which I mentioned...but she's still a great singer but not for opera:)

  • Amei, Tarja arrasa em tudo q faz!!!

  • Simone Simons have operatic voice, Tarja IS opera singer. She was in Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir where she performed Wagner and Verd. While Sarah was in dance group Pan's People.

Difference between them is huge, Sarah can not be compared with Tarja.

  • "Hon blickar in i solen..."?

Is she singing on swedish? O.o

  • @CrescentLily

Mjo, hon gör nog det. ;))))

  • in that dress she looks like the queen of pain from alice in wonderland xD

  • this iis the perfecness of liefe,i even dont know if that word exist but its impossible to describe this beautiful, wonderful, amazing moment!

tarja is blessed to have that voice and to be so beautiful!

i think she is an angel!

she is godess!such a great singer....i respect her!

  • I heard she was recently attacked by an elk. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Where the heck have you heard this?

  • From a man I met recently when I was travelling in Scandinavia. He said that the elk attacked because she was in the forest dressed as a plant. Can anyone confirm this?

  • What did you have for breakfast man? o_O

  • This morning I had toasted bread with olive oil, garlic, tomatoes and cheese. I also had orange juice. Can anyone confirm this?

  • @curranchris & VictoriaSJ

    You made me laugh !

  • Can you confirm this? ;-)

  • @curranchris that sounds hilarious tbh.....

  • Always happy to help, Gretchen! I too like to eat! Of course I was only kidding about the elk attack. I do like to make random, nonsensical posts sometimes just to see how people respond. The fact is, I've never heard of Tarja or Nightwish but having heard her, I must say she is very talented and quite a honey too! Peace.

  • hmmmmm- can all those others play classical piano WHILE they sing???? Tarja can.

  • Can anyone confirm this?

  • Watch TVShows like Tarja - 2007 operatic performance 1 at W W W . TV-Vide . NET

  • Tarja sings operatically but she is not an "opera singer". I do not deny that she has a good voice, but when you compare her to people like Renata Tebaldi or Morserrat Cablle...lets be realistic.

  • Yeah, it's only the true hardcore fans who know nothing about opera who call her an Opera singer or the best soprano in the world. I like Tarja, she wowed me on "The Reign" single but you're right, she couldn't stand against an actual opera singer.

Plus, hearing her breath between songs/arias annoys me. There's techniques to limit that

  • @javi9330 What do you mean she is not an opera singer???

  • @IntampestusNox I mean exactly that. Her voice is "operatic" and nevertheless a good one. However, she's never performed in an actual opera and; were we to compare her to singers like Renee Fleming, Jessye Norman, Maria Callas, or Caballe......well, Tarja lacks. She lacks the experience and the technique of an actual opera singer. Thats what i mean by "she is not an opera singer".

  • @javi9330 Oh I agree with that!! Her technique bothers me a bit!!

  • Dont get me wrong I'm a HUGE Nightwish & Tarja fan, but her voice has never really WOWED me so much, maybe once or twice, it IS impressive but I HAVE heard better.

Also Tarja & Sarah Brightman (of whom I'm also a fan) Although both sopranos are two COMPLETLEY different Sopranos...Sarah has a much more bright & breathy voice but can tear Tarja down when it comes to her Lyric voice also.

  • I think comparations are not welcome here. Either Tarja or Sarah are great singers. Maybe someday we can see them singing together! Conversation over.

  • I would love to see Tarja and Sarah perform together! Their voices are so different that the song selection will be very important to let each shine in their own best ways.

However, I have heard them perform on the same CD! I couldn't believe it when I saw that they were both featured singers on Schiller's album "Day and Night". I immediately purchased their tracks from iTunes.

  • Una hermosa vos!!!!!!!!!!! cristina.

  • i agree completely. Tarja has a beautiful voice, but she seldom sings real opera...and when she does, it just doesnt compare. The same goes for Sarah Brightman. both beautiful voices, but far far from the best.

  • Completely Agree.

  • Don't crap on her, she's an amazingly talented soprano and also freaking beautiful.

However, as you might have known if you actually had a brain when it comes to music you should know that Tarja is only 32, therefore alot less experienced than most famous sopranos.

So she is certainly not the best in the world, but that doesn't make her any less of an incredible soprano!

She still rocks ass in my book ^^

  • you are fucking idiot!

  • total agree with you Andrey9134! the stupidity of people trying to denigrate Tarja has no limit! Let's hope in the end that there will be something left of their "XXSmall intelligence"!

  • 4:19 to 4:23 Wonderful *o*

  • It was "evil empire of communist soviet Russia" (which was then 6 weeks old) that granted Finland independence. It was for the very reason of the fall of the tsarist power that Finnish independence was possible, notwithstanding the efforts of Finns to achieve independent statehood (mind that we are talking about 1917 not 1940).

Tarja has a great voice, she is stunningly beautiful, has a great temper one feels when she's singing, but she is definitely not the best soprano on this planet mate.

  • Her Swedish doesn't sound like Swedish to me. Actually it sounds terrible (but I'm not from Sweden). Hower it's always nice to hear Tarja singing.

  • Finnish Swedish differs a lot from the mainstream rikssvenska or hogsvenska. Finnish guys would have to correct me here probably, but I think that using mainstream Swedish during official state ceremony would be at least frowned upon. In addition, they teach them only the Finnish Swedish dialect in schools in Finland. However, in my opinion, as one sings Vart Land it's 100% ok, but probably the matter should be reconsidered while singing Sibelius songs.

  • the amazing Tarja.

  • Exelente sOpranO

    lO que dejO ir NightWish

  • tarja i love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, Tarja is good, as in a different way...

But I'm sure she's not a really good soprano.

She lost her voice in Nightwish.

  • mmm

  • Actually Tarja is in the top 30 worlds best sopranos. Pitch perfect..!!!!!

  • Show me this list and I might believe you.

  • Hey she's better then Anette, no offense. She's also a lot better then Sharon (I do like her though) from Within Temptation. I think Tarja got popular because, A: she was in a rock band and B: she does have good stage presence that many people who sing regular pop lack. But I will say this, I think, since Nightwish, she's regained a bit of voice.

  • @ComaLies225 you don't agree with it?

  • I think she's a great singer, but top 30? No, sorry. : /

  • que vOz perdiO nightwish

vean solo la exelencia... ella es lo mas humilde

  • ella es muy buena...

    no perdio voz en NW

    ganó nombre con ellos

  • oh for God's sake stop comparin her and Enjoy The Goddamn song. i Think She Sings Beautiful and thats it

  • Tarja is a very good Classical singer! Her dress is cool, by the way! :)

Also, I truly respect her, and I'm amazed of how much she improved. She was born a Lyric Mezzo Soprano (That's why she may not have perfect high notes, and shows more support and power in the middle register.), but then she worked on her voice until she reached a (Full Lyric) Soprano range. Nowadays, she could be considered a Light Lyric Soprano, as she said on her official blog!

She rocks! Haters, get a life!

  • i know there are other sopranos which can sing better than tarja, but i adore tarja.. her colour of voice is amazing.. NO ESPERA MENOS DE TI TARJA

  • WOW.

    is all i can say

  • hey, no offense or anything but i just wanna comment on the info of the video

"The world's best soprano singer Tarja Turunen "

she is not the best BUT one of the best soprano in the world

lets not forget joan sutherland, maria callas, sarah brightman and leontyne price...

    peace!

  • Thank you. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that error. Tarja, as lovely of a voice she has, isn't in fact an opera singer. Tarja could have been but sadly her reign in Nightwish wouldn't have existed.

You also forgot to mention Diana Damrau and Rita Streich

  • oh you're right.. plus renata tebaldi...i like damrau strong voice...

  • and she's a damn good singer to :)

  • Of Course Tarja is not at Callas or Sutherland's level, but please don't put Sarah Brightman in the level of those two ladies... lol

Tarja is a Good singer, but Sarah Brightman is not better than her, and Brightman is nothing compared to Sutherland, Callas, or even Caballé...

I think these three ladies have a level of their own!

  • Sarah is a great Opera singer actually. She can easily sing and sustain E6 in head voice, and add a very good vibrato. Maria Callas, Diana Damrau, Joan Sutherland, etc. are better than Sarah because they had more years of vocal training, but it doesn't make Sarah a bad singer.

But the best of the best are Yma Sumac (D2-Db7), Ellen Beach Yaw (G3-D7), Erna Sack (G2-C7), and Mado Robin (?-Bb6, D7). These Coloratura Sopranos had the highest voices ever, and the most impressive singing ranges!

  • Thanks for answer, I personally think that a huge vocal range doesn't mean a great opera singer or a great singer in general, but of course it helps a lot.

I personally add the technical use of the voice, the natural timbre, the kind of roles the artist have done, the inovation her/his interpretations brought to music scene, and in case of opera is also important the stage presence, etc.

And for me, when talking about sopranos, Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas were at their prime the Best ever!

  • You should try listening to the singers I mentioned before judging. Yma Sumac, for example, had one of the most beautiful sounding voices ever, and she was amazingly versatile! She could sing Operas, she could use her chest voice, she could do the ''double voice'' and the ''triple thrills'', and she could also imitate birds. She had perfect control over both her low and high registers. Judging by vocal skills, she's by far the best singer who ever lived, or at least one of the very best.

  • I listened to Yma Sumac, of course I will need more time to have a formed opinion about her, but yes her voice seemed to be really great!

But on the other hand I can't find her singing any "tradicional", or eupropean repertoire (like bellini verdi, etc), so its dificult to compare her to my favourits (Sutherland, Callas, Damrau).

But I will pay more atention to Sumac, I really got curious, thanks.

  • Yep, she has never performed any Operas by Mozart, Bellini, Verdi, etc., I guess.

You should give the original versions of "Lament", "Ataypura", "Taita Inty" and "Chiken Talk" a listen. I'll send you a download link, because you may not find some of her songs on YouTube!

She really has one of the most amazing and natural/unforced vibratos! And the most impressive thing is that she could actually SING and sustain all those Stratospheric high notes in head voice. She never used whistle register.

  • Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas are two of my favorite Opera singers, as well, but they had very average vocal ranges, and Maria Callas didn't have perfect high notes. She sounded better in her middle register. Their vocal techniques weren't that perfect either. But they're better than many Opera singers.

Natalie Dessay should also be considered one of the best because she has an amazing Coloratura! :)

...And Diana Damrau has probably the most powerful voice in Opera! :P

  • Diana Damrau, is my favourit from the "today" sopranos, she is really amazing!

A problem with Callas is the fact that most of her recordings are from her later career, and her voice in the 40's and first half of the 50's didn't have some "fragilities" she would have later (including the high pitches). Anyways, all of these names are from top sopranos who had great knowledge of how to work with their amazing instruments (her voices)

Thanks for answer, I liked to share these ideas with you.

  • Oh, I see! I know that sometimes voices may become deeper and unstable once the singers get older.

What I really loved about Maria Callas was the emotion in her voice, and her Coloratura, which was indeed brilliant! :)

  • @soundslikeblue i completely agree in my opinion tarja is 30000 times better than sarah brightman tarja has more feeling and passion to her voice and strength

but sarah brightman is just meh...

  • @soundslikeblue These ladies have different ranges of their soprano voices ))) Dramatic Coloratura, lyric coloratura, lyric soprano etc. :) Tarja is great in her range :)

  • Hmm, Sarah Brightman not so much, but the others definitely win.

  • @tripleaxell Brightman? OMG! Tarja is 100% better than Sarah :D

  • @potterclubtv You are right! ;)

  • Tarja is a soprano now, a dramatic soprano (the deeper kind) with a range of 3 octaves, but she WAS a mezzo until Century Child. She said herself she can reach very low notes because she used to sing Mezzo's notes in the past.

  • I guess you never heard a Dramatic Soprano!

Tarja in now a Light Lyric Soprano, not a Dramatic one. She has never sang like a Dramatic Soprano, nor did she perform any Dramatic Soprano roles. I don't understand why everyone says this nonsense.

Dramatic Sopranos don't necessarily have deep voices. They have extremely powerful and heavy voices, that can be heard over very big orchestras. Wagnerian Sopranos have the most powerful voices!

Tarja has a warm and dark voice, but it is not heavy!

  • I meant *SUNG*, not "sang"! (Sorry!)

  • My Goodness! This is a beautifulness...! =") Miss her in Nightwish!! But she does ok by her own!

  • She's the best ! Love her <3 Her performance is so beautiful!...then she says that she's not a professional opera singer! But if she says so..........Anyway this is great! And she is great!

  • GENIUS, SPLENDID, AND.....SEXY :D

  • Comment removed

  • i love this vid :D

u know whats abit funny ? compare this to the tarja headbanging to slaying the dreamer on end of an era :D

    hehe ;)

ohh how i love tarja <3

  • @jauda99 hahah yeahh but she's great on all sides... <3 love her,, she's perfect in metal and opera...

  • On what I know Tarja itself said she used to be a Mezzosoprano until Century Child, then she turned to Dramatic Soprano

  • Tarja is a soprano yes.

  • Turunen, a Melhor! *-*

  • tarja is my platonic love

  • mine too!

  • TURUNEN, TURUNEN AUANTE TURUNEN!

  • Even though she sings in Swedish in the first one, I can't hear really...it's probably because of operatic vocals + Finnish accent...

  • Tarja is damn near a legend. End of aruging.

  • So let me get this straight. She can sing suprano (including Christine in Phantom of the Opera with Sarah Brightman's highest note sang live). However a contralatero suprano can extend her range up for a bit? Is this comment on where her voice is naturally set? This obviously doesn't impose on her technical ability unless she sings opera night after night?

So does it matter? Not being a full suprano makes her more versatile! Her power and endurance is shown by many difficult Nightwish concerts.

  • Well, lucyjimeno, every female singer can sing Soprano, and some of them can even reach a Soprano range (C6 and/or D6, for example) with only their chest voice, but it doesn't mean they are natural Sopranos. Tarja has the timbre of a Mezzo Soprano, and she feels comfortable when she sings in the middle register, but she can sing Soprano in head voice. She even stated this fact on her official blog!

  • Here's Tarja's own opinion, I found it from Tarja's blog:

"I sang a repertoire of a mezzo-soprano for many years and because of that, still today, I have rarely quite low register for a lyrical soprano. Nowadays, I see myself as a light lyrical soprano."

  • OK!! BUT I¨M A LYRICAL SINGER( 9 YEARS LEARNING IN CONSERVATORY), I TEACH LIRICAL TECNIC, AND ALL MY MASTERS TAHAT HEAR TARJA SAY TAHT SHE¨S A NATURAL MEZZO WITH A GRATE VOCAL RANGE: WHY PEOPLE( THAT NEVER HEAR A COMPLETE OPERA ) PRETENDING THAT¨S A LOT OF DIFERENT OPINIONS??? HEAR : MARIAN ANDERSON, KIRI TE KANAWA AND CECILIA BARTOLI AND TELLS THE DIFERENCE. if you can!!!

  • See the Tarja´s interview after she sang The music of the night and she says that she is not soprano, "I´m contralto" she says , you cannot say that she doesn´t know what she is

  • tienes toda la razon, por el timbre de voz tarja es mezzosoprano y por el rango vocal es soprano, sin embargo lo que define tu voz es su color en resumen podria ser clasificada como soprano dramatica o mezzosoprano que es lo mismo...

  • tarja looks so beautiful

  • TARJA SINGS WITHOUT TROUBLE IN A FA4, NO ONE SOPRANO, EXCEPT THE SOPRANO DRAMATICA, MAKE THAT NOTE, SHE´S COULD BE A SOPRANO DRAMATICA( HEAR LYONTINE PRICE) OR A MEZZO. AND IT´S NT A SIN TO BE A MEZZO!!! BUT HER VICE HAVE EXTENTION TO HIGH NOTES( A FA6, but never hear her singig that) HER NATURAL VOICE IT¨S MEZZOSOPRANO, BUT WORKING SHE SINGS VERY HIGH!!

  • WE LOVE YOU TARJA!

  • nice dress

  • Haha the mic was freaking out on her. That's happened to me before. xD

    GOD she's fabulous.

And yes, she IS a soprano. Just because she can sing mezzo doesn't make her one. That just means she has a good range.

  • SHE´S NOT A SOPRANO, is a mezzo soprano. And is not the best soprano in the world; only de best female metal singer, HEAR : KIRI TE KANAWA; MONTSERRAT CABALLE; KATLEEN BATTLE!! TARJA IS AMAZING, BUT TO BE THE BEST SINGER IS NEEDED MORE!

  • The third one was amazing

  • tarja turunen es mejor...me encanta esta cancion y su voce

  • whish arias is she performing?

  • as beautiful as always...

  • She performed the 3rd one with such passion that I don't think I've ever seen her deliver before. That was beautiful!

  • "The world's best soprano singer Tarja Turunen"

She's far from the best. Awesome in Nightwish and solid overall, but not the best.

  • Your right, she is far from the best. How ever she is still exceptional.

  • True, she did a great job here, and the orchestra backing her was lovely.

  • most beautiful voice
