I tried your recipe out last night and boy oh boy was it delicious...a little too much flavor for our liking so next time I will just have to cut back on the spices a little, but still very good!! Thank you so much for sharing. And I must add this was my first time making them, you have no idea how much I appreciated the video!! Cheers
@JeanneCaprice You're welcome. They are pretty tasty. If you make them in the crock pot they don't heat up the house so you COULD make them in the summer! :)
my mums recipe has a spoon of grape jelly in the stuffing mix and in the tomato sauce gives it a tinny sweetness, i'll try yours though and see if the kids lick there plate clean
Could I fry up the meat then mix together with the other ingredients, wrap in the leaves and put it in the oven for a shorter time? Can you also add some type of cheese or crumbled sausage to the mixture for more taste or would this alter the taste too much? tks.
@goldengirl67 You could probably do that but the texture wouldn't be the same. Instead of the crockpot, you can make the rolls as I indicate and then bake them in a casserole dish, covered, in a 375 degree F oven for about an hour. You can add whatever you'd like and I think the sausage woud be tasty!!
@1958boomergirl That's funny - I have them in the crock pot right now! I make them just after the kids go to school and then I don't have to think about making dinner all day! Yummy! Good luck!
@a1angiem they turned out great...Had to go back to your video 3 times. hahahhaha...P.S. Neighbor ate 2....THANKS for putting video on for us stupid guys. haha
@kduideo so glad you enjoyed them! and you're not stupid! you just didn't know how to make them - and a lot of people don't! and now you do...and it's always nice to share with the neighbours! thanks for watching and commenting! cheers!
@a1angiem I am eating one now while watching BEWITCHED,.....I watched many videos in the last 24 before I chanced this...I did GREAT thanks to YOU!! Yes neighbor ate two...So ..........HOT DARN I did something in the new year.....Nothing but THANKS froms the bottom of guy's heart who can NOT boil water.
Love your step by step instructions that other videos didn't specify on how to prepare the cabbage leaves or baking time! I find your video very helpful.
@a1angiem Angie don't they unroll & come apart in the crock pot from cooking, If you dont put a toothpick through them,? I remember that my Mom when she made them in the oven she use to tie them up with sewing string to keep them from un ravelling during the cooking process, the only drawback was you to cut off all of the string before eating them.?
@MyREDTAIL I can honestly say the absolutely do not come undone! The first time I ever made them I used toothpicks and thought, this is crazy! So i tried it without and have been doing it that way ever since. If you roll and fold them the way I demonstrate I've never had a problem. So much easier!
hi Angie you make yours the same way i do,this time for first i used savoy cabbage what a nice diff in the taste,i usely get my cabbage, steam them and take the leaves apart wrap well and freeze saves a lot of time or clean the cabbage and freeze head of cabbage thks for sharing
Thank you so much for this recipe! It's been so long since I've had them, I'm going to make them tonight.
When my grandmother used to make them for meshe made them in a huge pot and simmered them all day. She had shredded cabbage and a little ground beef in the bottom, which make a delicious cabbage soup. I never got the recipe or technique of how to do this, and ideas?
@greenkitty73 You're welcome! You can also make these in a casserole in the oven and bake...I layer cabbage & sauce in the bottom of it (like grandma) but never thought to make the soup, we just eat it as extra! But that 's a great idea. I will check into that and let you know...and soon it will be fall and the perfect time to get the cabbage rolls cooking again after the hot summer! thanks for watching!
@a1angiem Glumkees Thanks Angie you make them just like my Polish grandmother made them but using a crock pot is a great idea I will try them that way instead in the oven, thanks again Do you add any water to the tomato sause when in the crock pot ?
Great video and very informative. My Mom made the best cabbage rolls but she never showed me how and I've been nervous about making them. Your video has inspired me to make them for my dh and me! Many thanks!
yumm! I love cabbage rolls but I always used to take the leaves off while they are crisp :P then they all got cracked and ripped and especially with small tight cabbages I wouldnt get much out of them to roll with, but boiling the whole cabbage head like that is a brilliant method! Thank you!
my wife makes cabbage rolls beef and pork :-) she comes from an Hungarian family.I think its Hungarian but I may be wrong. She is making them right now!!
i always make cabbage roll, the recipe that shes missing to put the mixture is rice and ketchup, i always used asian cabbage it taste alot better and it is easy to roll..
Just a tip Angie....if you core the cabbage and rinse it in cold water..focusing on getting the water down into the cored area....then pop it into the freezer for several days..until its frozen rock solid......thaw the cabbage and .the leaves will be softened and come off easily without ever having to boil it - Use the outer bigger leaves to line your baking pan and to cover the tops of the cabbage rolls to prevent scorching...bake as usual. Its a great tip that works out very well.
Great! I thought it might since the soya protein "acts" like meat so the texture is the same and the flavour of the veggies is "picked up". That's great to know! (Although maybe other vegetarians won't visit this vid! lol!) Thanks!!
Hmmm, interesting...both my recipes (slow cooker and oven) use cooked rice. I just like the crock pot because then dinner is ready and I don't have to think about it any more!! lol!
Might have been another video that I saw a comment about just soaking the rice in water for about half/hour.. I've always made them with cooked rice but might just try soaking them next time.
butterflyamanda, you could use all sorts of fillings for your cabbage rolls. in palestinian cooking we add rice to the meat, but others fill it with something called "freekeh" or also bulgur/burgul, along with diced onions and tomatoes, we boil them in water and add lemon juice and garlic to the water. it goes great with zaziki. not to detract from angie's hard work and deliscious recipe, of course, it's another one completely.
Sarma!!!

Also you can smash the stems a little with a rolling pin or meat tenderizer, this way there's no missing part of the leaf.

The salt is already in the canned sauce so you don't really need more (there is some in the filling too)...the sauce is pretty plain...
