  • I like Paul's leather products. But they are just out of my price range. As for the ferrorod, I too have bought all sort of rods from the SFS to the strikeforce from UST... but I have started more fires with my no name Chinese $1.99 firesteels off eBay. Bought them 10 at a time and they work great other than you have to jb weld on the handle for a secure fit. I normally carry my strikeforce and a china special as a backup.

  • I have the same fire steel. It works great.

  • make a fire starter video review

    don't start a fire...

  • Supposedly ferrocerium is all like that, but I don't have experience with it. :(

  • how many fires have you made with it so far?

  • THE best fire starter I have used. I have been using mine full on for about 6 months. Rod is now wearing in the moddle as they all do.I was so impressed that I contaced Aurora makers Solo Scientific and ordered 2 new rods and o rings along with a "lifetime" striker blade. There is nothing wrong with the blade on there,I just got one for the hell of it.Helpful too.Postage to Australia from the USA was mega cheap. I have used all sorts of rods over the years. this though is by far the best !

  • just picked up the system alone in black for 20 bucks

  • Nice product. ferrocerium is actual a mix of metals including about 5% magnesium. This might have a bit more or be harder, thus making the sparks last longer.

  • how many strikes can you do?

  • There are other ferro rods like that dude

  • how do you use this jeff?

  • I love the Aurora. It's the best one I've used. The other kinds are cheaper but they don't last very long.

  • i just bout one of these from ebay, cant wait till it arrives looks like a great product and your reviwe helped me decide what fire starter to get, thanks keep up the good vids.

  • ok we realy dont care about the case we care about the fire starter

  • My fire starter cost me about 4 bucks and hangs around my neck

  • 4 minutes of talking up the case? really? hope you get some sort of kickback

  • "Jew twine"

I know he didn't say Jew. Shut up.

  • so do u think thats a better leather work then the ka bar sheath

  • i dont c that on their website

  • dude...i can't find the aurora fire starter with the sheath.....

  • i got one from ebay, the one bear gryls uses, it only works well if i shave it down, i only paid 2 dollars so meh, i prefer my reusable match

  • how do you make char cloth???

  • @NikLagua

google it for f-sakes! who asks questions like that these days?

  • knurrls are actully pressed into the stock with a knurrling tool rather than cuts

its hard to center it but once u center it your set

  • Holy crap You take long to say things... the video could be half as long with out repeating yourself... took u 8 minutes to show us how it worked...

  • annotate to the second part of this

  • Don't insult cutlerylover! This guys knows what he is talking about, I've learned a lot from him so far

  • wait can u use that case for a flashlight and if u even can check with ur own flash lights see which works best or could work lol cause i wouldent mind wearing a case like that for a light

  • Just for the record... all firesteel/firestarter/flints can be lit when they are wet, so the O-ring is kind of redundant. The first flint I ever bought cost me $4 Australian Dollars off eBay, I camp regularly and I got about 3 years use - I'd guess maybe 5000 scrapes. It was also impregnated with magnesium, all flints have that too. I really don't see what is so special about this flint, it's striking mechanism looks clumsy too. The case is nice, but I'd rather one for my knife.

  • really? u talked for 3minutes almost 4. About the STUPID FREAKING CASE! I almost fell asleep...........

  • You should do another video on how well you like the case. I dont think you talked enough about how awsome the case is.

  • holy fuck will you stop talking about the god damn case you already said it on the first part before your battery died and then you kept on talking about it again

  • Do they still sell this because it wasnt on their website?

  • let me give you a little tip, feed the actual jute through the lanyard hole and use it as a lanyard and when you need to start a fire cut a piece with your knife and light it

  • let me give you a little tip, feed the actual jute through the lanyard hole and use it as a lanyard and when you need to start a fire cut a piece with your knife and light it

  • i love your videos

  • @affesmaria ther case is $70 or so thats why Im talking about it so long, peopel will want to know what makes it so special

  • @cutlerylover that was way way way to polite.

  • @affesmaria

Yeah, because you totally didn't click on the video by yourself.

  • Can the rod be replaced without having to buy a whole new unit?

$89 for a fire starter? ....or is that for the case as well? How much without case?

  • @ayokay123 for your first question, i'm not sure, but that is the main reason why people buy it. the firesteel is a combination of magnesium and cerium. therefore, the sparks are hotter and more long lived compare to just firesteel.

  • firesteel IS waterproof ....

  • i just received mine today i got to say its the best man i love it

  • how much does it cost

  • r there eny other website that sell this

  • This is not on their website... Discontinued?

  • how many fires do you think you could start with this

  • thigns like this always state like 10,000 fires, but realistically I woudl say at least 1000, maybe a little more, depends on how well you set up your fire, if yiouy cna get it lit with one strike you easily have over 1000 strikes..

  • I like your review but I don't like the product. Too gimmicky for me but I'd take the jute cord and cotton cloth. The leather case is nice but the idea of a waterproof aluminum case for a ferrocerium rod?? Overkill to say it nicely. The rods are robust, will take a beating, and need little more than a wipe down if damp or soaked. I'd take a blank rod with a good knife and head out. Nevertheless enjoy it, and don't lose that expensive puppy! Keep up the good work!

  • just go to jxmetals website to get ferro rods blank...

  • @mts0628 go to lighter flint website to get a blank rod

  • too much talk about the casing even though it looks really good but just spend more time on tricks and how to use the fire lighting skills

  • The grip is called knurling machined on a lathe.

  • I can seem to find a pherosium rod anywhere

  • you dont have any videos, lol

  • That entire package is a work of art. I never go camping though so I'd never need it =/

  • aw cute lil hands! ;)

  • Best fire starter there is.... kudos to who invented that.

  • Cool, but dang i though it was a fire piston.

I already have lots of ferro rods but really want a fire piston. Does anybody make a firepiston that looks like this?

  • ughh i thaught it was a fire piston till u opend it that is when i lost intrest

  • Dude...you hold the flint next to your tinder and pull away with the blade.

  • i have a firesteel with magnesium

it's awesome the sparks fall on the floor

  • Voce vai mostrar o fire starter ou a porra da da bainha?

  • too much time on the case

  • hedgehog leather works Is SOOOO expensive!

  • i think he knows about lighters because he has the biggest zippo collection i have ever looked at. -.- du

  • what if you dont have a lighter ?

  • i have never been camping before 0-o

  • wat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just discovered your videos, I love the survival/nature videos. Just curious--how is the camerawork done? You're using both hands in the demonstration but the camera doesn't seem like it's on a tripod. Hm..haha. Anyway, keep up the videos!

  • He mentioned why it looks like the camera is moving in one of his other videos a while back. His camera has a sort of "tracking" feature that changes direction a little bit when large objects move off-screen.

  • Oh alright, thanks for the response.

  • jew twine thats not racist

  • "Jute" twine...lol not jew

  • i figured it out about half way threw video lol

  • @MyHouseBitchStudios , "jew" isn't a race by the way.

  • @MyHouseBitchStudios it wouldn't be racist either, it would be anti-Semitic

  • Blade dull as hell. I gave mine away.

Does work well with a custom stainless blade, if you're handy.

  • You talk about the knurling on the Aurora as being really cut deep, but recently on a short hiking trip, I threw it in my backpack with my TAD Gear Life Capsule, and the knurling left a lot of scratches on my Life Capsule. Thanks to the anodized finish, most of them just wiped off, but after that I'd still rather get that custom leather pouch and move the whole thing to the outside MOLLE webbing on my drop leg survival pouch.

  • Can you get just the firestarter w/o the sheath? I know it's nice but for hiking and stuff it would be nice to shave some weight and leave behind the unnecessary stuff.

  • yes watch the end of the video, just the firestarter is $20

  • Awesome! Thanks. Seems a bit crazy that the sheath costs more than the firestarter itself.

  • were can i get a Aurora Fire Starter comment me back

  • watch the end of the video...

  • I want to know the EXACT size\dimension\length of the UNIT

....because I plan to insert it INSIDE the Hollow handle of a survival custom knife and I need to know if it will FIT inside before I purchase one .....Anyone could help me ???

  • search hedgehogleatherworks, the maker has a channel here he can help you...

  • Great thanks

  • What kind of knife are you talking about? If it's something like a Ka-Bar with a hollow wooden handle, a knife like that itself might not even be worth bringing with you in a survival situation.

The tang on those knives is so short you risk the handle breaking during any hard work, which survival usually requires a lot of.

If you do get one of those USMC Fighting Ka-Bar's, get one with a full tang (mine is in 1095, and cost about $60). It doesn't matter what the handle is made of then.

  • My survival is not cheap!

    its a Custom 440c Survival : cost $1850.00

  • I'm confused, you paid $1,800 for a knife in 440 carbon?

It seems to me, for that price you should've been able to get a much better steel...

    ..please explain!

  • 6:00 strike your rod.. lol

  • Man that's cool. I could have used that on my trip to Kentucky! Lots of on and off rain :p

  • awsome

  • $89 for a fire starter??? Very nice but VERY,VERY,VERY overpriced.....

  • the fire starter is $20...

  • Its still a pretty expensive toy, especially with such a small piece of firesteel.

    but good video, thanks :)

  • you mostly just shell out the bucks for the sheath, i just bought the aurora fire starter and its great i did not buy the sheath great vid Jeff

  • Stud snap is called a Sam Browne in UK. Thanks for sharing

  • i have that and it works awsome!

  • OH NO THEY KILLED AND SKINNED SONIC!

  • awesome as usual jeff!

  • I Just got mine in the mail today,It's Pretty cool. Thanks For showing us this thing,It'll come in handy when I go camping.

  • Im glad you like it...

  • if i'm out of fuel than i grab two sticks and and start rubbing them together

  • it's cool but a lighter is easier and and sometimes funner

  • what if you dont have fuel?

  • Why not carry both? Or all three, you could carry this, a lighter, and some fuel :) Zippo makes a nice little fuel carrying device.

  • lol maybe you dont have so much space ? or your zippo just broke XD

  • Cary 3 Zippos. And if you run out of space, take a camel :)

  • Oh k thanks for clarifying the price issue. About the being wet, yeah I wasn't advising that you should keep you're firesteel in your waterbottle or anything, lol, just wasn't sure what was so useful about an o-ring. Thanks for the info!

  • You got a new logo...what happened to the nowhere man with the balisong?

  • can you do a demestration of this when its dark out to let us see how it performs

  • whoa... this looks useful! where can i get one, dude?

  • Ok! I Just bought one of these things...minus the case.

I Got the one with the "super blade" or something

  • oh ok nice, the super blade I think reffers to where the case is that piece of metal that strikes the rod...

  • Ronson Jet Lite, $3 at walmart

  • lol i saw that in my walmart too :P

  • Loved the review, but just wanted to make one remark: Yes it's worth to spend a little more cash to get something that's good quality and is reliable. But you can get another fire starter (Swedish firesteel, blastmatch, strike force, magnesium rod etc.) that IS good quality for much cheaper. If you get this item, more power to you, I'm just saying.

P.S.- what's the point of an O-ring on a firerod, aren't they supposed to work wet or dry? (Unless it rusts b/c if the magnesium(?))

  • JUST the fire atarter only costs $20...same prices as the blastmatch, but twice the price of a standard swdiesh fire steel...many peopel think the cost is in the aurora but its mostly the custom made case for it...

  • forgopt to mention no all firesteels shoudlnt be wet for a logn time they will deteriorate...

  • I almost pooped myself when I saw the price lol

Your just rolling in the cash =P

  • lol...people keep sayign that, haha, I still make less than $1000 a month I just happen to be spendfing more these days as apposed to trading, lol, thats all...

  • I've got several fire starters. I have the Aurora and think of it more as a novelty. The water proof housing..... I guess that could come in handy the next time I'm lost at sea :-) I agree with peanut2787, get a rod with or without a handle from Going Gear. You can get them in various sizes and they are the same misch metal as the Aurora.

  • check out the goinggear website.

I'm not sure if you were holding back because you were indoors but their rods seem better.

Check out their "How to use a mischmetal ferro rod / firesteel" youtube video.

Globs of molten metal hitting the ground from waist height.

  • "cordage" i like that congratulations on using an awesome word that i have never heard and also very detailed video lots of info

  • very costly but on another note, not to b mean but it was oneee item and its case and u managed to talk it up for 10min?! not to put down ur vids cuz i love them, but i think u will get a lot more viewers if u repeat stuff less and get to the point. once again love ur vids

  • contructive critisism is more than welcome but this is why I have so many subscribers, because of my longer more detailed videos...yes I could make this vid 1 minute long and get all the info out I need, but whats fun about watching that?

  • The video was fine, Jeff.. You're correct in stating that people watch your stuff cuz you know what you're talking about and you're detailed...

On a side note, I agree that you can tell this is a quality item by the leatherwork and the gnarling on the housing.. Fine work on both pieces... I don't really have use for a firestarter, but if I did I'd get a quality piece like this.

  • very true and i suppose the viewer can choose to make a longer video shorter but not a shorter video longer

  • Cutlerylover, not to be annoying or a prat in anyway whatsoever, Why do you always put "..." after your sentences? Is it just an old habit or what? it kind of gets annoying (i must have some kind of stupid OCD against "...")

  • ist always been somethgin I did, I originally did it as a trademark thing to set me apart from othgers on the forum, people knew when I posted because of it, it sort of stuck thats all...sorry if its annoying, lol, some poeple also cant stand my typos, I just have too much to type and am too lazy to go back to fix them all...

  • I noticed it too, but I'm not annoyed I think its awesome...

Gotta have your own calling card these days if you're doing youtube reviews, lol...

    Keep it up.

  • and what lifetime has this device? i wonder...

  • yours and mine, just not you aparently...

  • $89????

    Not worth it.

  • fire starer is $20...

  • wow, i got this exact type of firesteel from aurora for about $5.50 and it was only about a year or less lol

  • have you ever tryed the blast match that oones my favorite cuz it stays lit but the rod is like 4 times thicker then thos

  • well i am going on a 6 day and night camping trip what would be the best fire starter to use?? (besides this one)

  • a firesteel

  • small recommendation, why not do the item first, than the case? so if you (or like me) only have a few minutes, can watch review of the item, than if have time watch the rest.

    just my thought.

    thank you

  • That's nice, too rich for my blood. I'll stick with my strike force fire starter though.

  • What's wrong with a freaking BIC lighter?

  • cool^^

  • How many strikes does the rod last?

  • that would actually be very nice to have i must say. By the way I just bought a colibri morpheus II =)

  • What about a combo of the mixed bar and some magnesium to make a nice hot flash as well :P

  • wow great sheath design. ALL sheaths, including knife sheaths, should have the clip on the belt strap. it makes removal sooooo much easier. great vid :)

  • cool but 90 dollars!!

  • Thanks Jeff! Awesome little vid. Very cool indeed, but....... waaaay to much money in my humble opinion.

  • ok i love it but one thing when you use all of the steel up do you need to buy a whoule new unit or does it come out and you po in a new one thanks and keep up the good work

  • i think you are ONE OF MY FAVOURITE YOUTUBERS! cutlerylover

your vids never fail to dissapoint

  • Hedgehog Leatherworks does some gorgeous work. I especially like their Fallkniven sheaths for the Northern Lights series. Thanks for sharing!

  • Sounds like it's pretty much a BlastMatch with aluminum casing.

  • cool

  • made by hedgehogs im guessing

  • i dont want to be a clever dick and correct me if i am wrong but all ferrocium rods have 4% magnesium that probally just has more magnesium

  • Most firesteel does indeed contain magnesium oxide from what ive read before (though the percent i couldnt tell you and i assume it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer).

Ive read mixed reviews on forums as to if this is much of an improvement over the Swedish steel, but what people count as a negative isnt the steel itself but the case and striker it comes in.

  • Seems like a LOT of money for what will essentially be a backup (primary fire lighting should always be from a Bic/Zippo style lighter). Plus its very bulky which is a huge negative.

Now the concept of the new style misch metal might be an improvement (emphasis might) but the key to fire is not your spark but your tinder anyway.

Seems more like marketing hype than a much better product. Marginally better, probably, best fire starting method, definately not.

  • I still say the best in my oppinion, not the easiest, but sure is the most reliuable, only thing better woudl be a larger rod that woudl last longer...but thats just my opinion...alos keep in mind the fire starter only costs $20...

  • defenetly awsome ... a box of matches is cheaper though

  • I dont like the Aurora, but the sheath is great!

  • lol its 20 dolars on a site

  • Man, for that price I hope that it gathers my fire wood too.

  • Nice video bob.

  • THIS THING DOES NOT BEAT A ZIPPO

  • In terms of fuel comsumtion it does.

  • lol

    female part and male part

  • you paid 70 dollar for the sheath :O

  • worth every penny...defimatly on par with a top quality leather case...I paid the swme for my sebenza sheath and its about the same size...

  • Yes you talk to much

  • lol it did sound like jew twine rofl but its jute
