Btw, from what I remember from years ago, the UK police keep anything that's lost and found for 3 months. If it's not claimed it is given to the person who found it which used to happen quite a lot.
When I lived in Hong Kong, I found a wallet with cash, an ID card (very time-consuming to replace) and a signed cheque for the equivalent of £33,000! There were no contact details so I rang a solicitor whose card was in there and asked if he knew the name on the ID card as I'd found his wallet. He gave me the guy's phone number who then came to my office and collected his wallet. He was very nervous and barely said thank you. Never mind - I was pleased to help.
