@Micelli1947 Then again, today's night clubs are legal. Vallee and his colleagues had to deal with that little inconvenience known as the 18th Amendment.
This pace, mood and phrasing of this original Rudy Vallee version is perfect - it does send you away. I first heard this song on a Duo-Art reproducing piano roll from 1929 - the pacing and phrasing is similar to Vallee's arrangement.

@laeditor that's interesting! I see the band also has a tuba in it. I thought that around the late '20s that dance orchestras started replacing tubas with bass fiddles, to produce a softer tone....am I incorrect on that?
@1276epr Funny that you mention that, because my grandfather also played the tuba (I've got a great picture of him with a tuba). As far as your question goes, I really don't know the answer (sorry!). That would be a good question for a music historian.
@laeditor a friend of my Dad's (long since deceased) that had a local band of some repute told me that. He also said bands shifted another part of the rhythm section, banjo to guitar, for the same reason, i.e. to give the music a less harsh staccato tone. BTW he had lots of fascinating stories about bands that were famous recording stars of the mid to late '20s that travelled in this general area.
For me the opening of Bonny & Clyde should be elected on the five greatest film openings since the invention of the cinema, with the one of "Green Soylent", "Cross of Iron", "Come and See" (Elem Klimov), "Scarface" and "The tin drum".
ive always wanted to know what the song was at the begining of Bonnie and Clyde. then i watched My Own Private Idaho and was like 'hey! is that song!' i found what it was from that movie and downloaded it right away! <3
@MoreRitzCrackers I liked the movie. I LOVED this song and literally played it over and over for two hours. It becomes wonderful from 1:55 ... the words are pure poetry.
That was extra good. I can remember Rudy Vallee playing a cameo role in the 1942 film "The Palm Beach Storey" worth watching and listening to.......just to notice the change in his voice thirteen years later.
Provocative is all I can say. Incredibly provocative... Garbo & Valentino romantic

Wonderful. I love dance band music from this era, whether U.S or U.K.

Ah! I much prefer this slower, more mysterious version to Vallee's 1937 recording.
