  • Thank you so much for this. I had this LP as a little boy in the late 70's. I have thought of this song throughout the years and am glad to see this here.

  • Please, does anybody know the name of the Maddy Prior song where she sings 'through bushes and through briar'?

  • @hejafish "Bushes and Briars" is a classic folk song, and the opening lines are the very ones that you had quoted. I know that Maddy Prior is credited to have recorded it at some point, but sadly, I can't find any postings of it here on YouTube. Although there are many other artists that have been uploaded / featured here as singing it, such as Loreena McKennitt & Julie Christie.

  • very nice

  • @drsmith1958 Thanks!

  • Thanks so much for posting this gothling; beautiful memories re-emerge when I remember Maddy Prior's brilliant singing.

  • @cantehondo You're more than welcome. Though the pleasure is mine in receiving such nice comments as yours. Yes, Maddy's voice is quite distinctive, and has carried forth an amazing body of work over time. But this song will always remain special to me. Thanks for watching!

  • please please, I am looking for a Maddy Prior album the raven? Can anyone help me find this??

  • @minnoui While it's not an album that I own at present (an oversight which I'll need to correct in pretty short order), I found a 1999 CD release by Maddy Prior entitled "Ravenchild". Would that be the one you're seeking? Amazon has it for just under $16, and their marketplace venders have it 'new' for just under $10 and 'used' for 99 cents. Sorry for sounding like a commercial, I'm just trying to help you out. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

  • OH thank you for posting this!!

  • @Mojave888 You're very welcome. Thank you for watching!

  • I love this song and Maddy , she's a treasure! thanks and all the best!!!

  • @Chastalard Yes, a treasure is exactly what she is. Thanks for watching, and all the best right back to you!

  • Oh I had this album when I wore a smaller man's clothes. Long ago and far away.

How nice to be reacquainted. And I love what you did to those photos. How did you get that effect?

  • @cantleysugar Yes, I also used to wear a younger man's clothes back when I first heard this tune. Though rather than discovering it during its original release on vinyl, I didn't actually discover the song or album until appearing in CD form. Even so, it's quite a splendid musical treasure which deserves unyielding appreciation. Ah yes, the effect of which you spoke is merely a watercolor filter from one of my graphics programs, which I thought was an appropriate touch. Thanks for watching!

  • Great song and extremely well crafted video - sat here with a headful of memories, have seen Maddy live more than once with Steeleye Span and also with another band in the mid nineties. Been a Tull fan since 68!! Memories too of when my children were small - now its the grandchildren!!

  • @quicktothe4 Thanks so much for your kind compliment, and for taking the time to watch. Yes, this song has a very definite way of bringing back memories on many levels: my own childhood and the years spent in raising kids of my own. That's certainly something we have in common, I expect it's pretty universal amongst folks out there.. And you're so right, the grandchildren have a miraculous way of bringing things full circle, don't they? Always a pleasure to meet another long-standing Tull fan.

  • Wow, very cool that you've seen Steeleye Span in concert here in the states. You were very fortunate, indeed. Yes, I became aware of Maddy's "Woman In The Wings" album just as it was first coming out on CD, and it's still quite a treasure to possess. I'm so glad that you finally discovered it for yourself. I agree, the internet really is quite a lovely window on a whole glorious array of obscure musical gems.

  • I've been a fan of Steeleye Span since 1971. Seen them here in the States twice. I don't know how this album slipped by me but I am glad I found it. Excellent song!! Thank God for the internet!!

  • Incredible! The back up band is one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth.

  • @swamirob Yes, I really like the way you gave such well deserved props to the "back-up band". Truer words have rarely been spoken, that's for certain. Thanks so much for watching & commenting.

  • I love this album! Have not heard it in years. Makes me hungry to hear "baggy pants."

  • @DiiMentedDii This album is a real gem, that's for sure.

  • that was a cool song! never heard it before.

  • @jonasjar Yes, a very cool song, indeed. I'm so happy that you've found it.

  • I absoloutely love this song. What a glorious combination that beautiful voice and that great flute playing.

  • @alisonmob Yes, this has been a very well-loved song by myself, as well, for many-many years. It truly has a hauntingly beautiful quality all its own. Thanks for the nice comment.

  • Maddy Prior & Ian Anderson: A great combination!

  • @Todd200 My feelings exactly. Thanks for watching!

  • I have this record, but I haven't played it in over 25 years. I remember it as being a pretty good record, though perhaps not up to the standard of the best Steeleye material or the Silly Sisters album. Even still, it was nice hearing this again. Maddy deserves way more attention than she's gotten.

  • @robibm2003 Yes, it's always daunting for an artist to go stepping out from an established musical group to try and investigate new directions. This album was released on CD right at the time of my discovery of it, along with her amazing "Year" album. I was utterly thrilled to have gotten them both. And oh yes, the Silly Sisters project was such a delightful & fulfilling period, and I still adore the work that Maddy did with June Tabor.

  • I've been in live with Maddy since 1970 or so, but your choice of her songs is fascinating. Also the feeling you put into the video accompaniments ... I'm speechless. I've wanted to comment on "Shadow of the Hare" since I first saw it, but as bigots have ruined that possibility, I'll thank you here for all your work. An artist!!

  • @drag0nspeaker Thank you, your kind words are very much appreciated. Maddy is a real treasure, that's for sure. It's an honor to have an opportunity to showcase a few of the many-many pieces she's rendered over time which have moved me in some very deep way. Thanks for watching!... And as for the "Hare" topic, I agree, it's tragic that there are those people out there who appear determined to spew their endless fits of hatred in such a forum.

  • Tull and Maddy Prior! How have i managed to live for (almost) 43 years and have never had the pleasure of hearing my two favourite musicians together?? Thankyou SO much! Is this album still available? feel a NEED coming on :-D........

  • Ain't that odd. I expanded my Tull playlist into "Tull & English" by adding in Gaudete and Black Jack. Then I find this. Small world

  • thank you for this beautiful post, i cant wait to dig into all the great songs that you post, your too kind!!!

  • Thanks, I'm really glad that you enjoyed this clip so much. It's quite a sweet, magical song. It brings back lots of happy memories from my own childhood, which I tried in illustrate in the visuals. You're always more than welcome to check out my archives, mixed bag though it all might be. Best wishes to you. :-)

  • Great post, love the watercolors. Got to burn this from my vinyl. woohoo long beach, ca. go millikan high

  • I appreciate your kind comments. Thanks for watching. Yeah, I was born in Long Beach, though it sure has changed a lot over the years. I guess I prefer remembering it the way it used to be. :-)

  • It's really a beautiful song. I've got the vinyl but the turntable is in another room. Thanks for sharing.

  • Yes, I agree, this is truly one of Maddy Prior's most beautiful songs. Thank you very much for watching and for leaving such a nice comment.

  • i originally bought this on vinyl coz of the IA connection great to revisit such a lovely song.Thank you

  • Yes, that was my reason for tracking down this vintage album as well -- only by the time I had bought it, the CD edition had just recently come out, so I went with the upgraded format. I agree, it really is a beautiful little gem of a song. Thanks for watching & commenting.

  • thank you this is truly lovely--are those your watercolors? They are also lovely

  • Thanks. I appreciate your watching & leaving such a nice comment. As for the graphics, no, they're just stray photos with a watercolor filter applied. I thought the look was especially appropriate. I'd love to illustrate my videos with my own paintings -- but it would take me forever to do so. Thanks again.

  • beautiful thank you for sharing ! x

  • Thank you so much for watching & commenting. It truly is a beautiful song, and I genuinely enjoyed the process of trying to find the right sort of images which could best represent my own particular grasp of the lyrics. :-)

  • wow. fantastic! This Steeleye and Tull fan from way back when never knew this existed!

  • I'm so glad that you stumbled across this cool little rarity here on YouTube. It's truly a pleasure to share this with so many appreciative folks. I was pretty blown away when I first heard the song, too. I thought it was a great combination of stellar talents. Thanks a lot for watching & commenting.

  • Me too, a fan of both who never knew about this one! It's wonderful!

  • I'm so happy I could help introduce this song to you then. I certainly remember how amazing it seemed to me when I first heard it years ago. Thanks for watching.

  • I knew Ian Anderson had produced a couple of Steeleye Span albums - and did 'Songs from the Wood' and 'Heavy Horses' immediately thereafter, which definitely showed Steeleye's influence.

I did not know he'd ever worked directly with Maddy Prior on recordings. And with such excellent results!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • Isn't this a wonderful little song? I'm really glad you enjoyed it so much. That's one of the major reasons why I wanted to feature this on my channel, in case there were folks out there who hadn't heard it before. And yes, in addition to Ian's producing chores on a Steeleye Span album, Maddy Prior is also credited with backing vocals on the "Too Old To Rock 'n' Roll" album, along with a bonus track on the newly remastered edition of Tull's "Stormwatch" CD, entitled "A Stitch In Time". Thanks!

  • Thank you for posting - I'm sure a labour of love ;)

Beautiful song fitting for such a beautiful voice..

  • Thank you so much. It was definitely my pleasure, I really enjoyed piecing this clip together. It certainly is a long-standing favorite of mine, and I'm thrilled that you (along with so many others) enjoyed it. :-)

  • I love Tull and Span!!

  • Fabulous

  • Thanks so much for giving my clip a look. I've loved this song ever since I first heard it on a regional San Francisco-based contemporary folk music program years & years ago. I'm thrilled to be able to share it here with everybody. It's kind of amazing for me to see the number of views it's gotten.

  • we should enjoy that too!it really does pay to surf around to find these rare songs huh?

  • this is an intresting find!My wife got me into Steeleye and Id ALWAYS been a Jethro Tull Fan!Thanks

  • Hey, it's my pleasure, really. Thanks for watching & for commenting. I think the only Steeleye album I ever had was the one which Ian Anderson supervised or produced (which ever term he was into using back then), and that was in the old waning days of vinyl. I really should look into gathering more in CD form, but mostly I'd started buying Maddy's discs after her solo career had gotten under way. There's another track from this album where Martin Barre plays solo guitar, which I'll post soon.

  • This is new to me and its lovely-always loved Jethro Tull so it is great to hear them with Maddy, my favourite artist. Another striking video-thanks for drawing my attention to the song too.

  • You're more than welcome. I originally made & posted this largely to show a different side of Tull, but it turned out to gather an enormous number of views, both from die-hard Tull fans & from loyal Maddy admirers. That's when I thought: "Okay, let's conjure a video to 'Fabled Hare' and see how it flies..." While Maddy enjoys a long history with Tull, she is certainly deserving of a featured spotlight of her own. I LOVE those solo CDs I've gathered, along with her collaborations with June Tabor.

  • Great to find this upload! I actually have this cd, but did not know this clip was posted. Excellent work on matching photos with music. I discovered "Woman in the Wings" because I am a huge Tull fan. Gutter Geese is my favorite track. Thanks again for posting, so that others can become exposed this rare collaboration of talent.

  • Thanks for the support. I honestly didn't know how much attention this video would get after I'd pieced it together, since most of my viewers are die-hard Tull fans. But it's ended up being pretty popular. I've been a huge Tull fan, too, ever since the "Passion Play" album (though I knew of them before that). Like you, I discovered Maddy's music through Tull. In fact, it's accurate to say that Tull inspired me to go exploring for a number of other British / Celtic performers over the years.

  • Thanks for the post. I've seen maddy ( Steeleye spam) live a few times and lost count for how many times I've seen Tull.

  • Thanks so much for watching. Sadly, I've never seen Maddy Prior or Steeleye Span perform live, so I think it's really great that you have. As for Tull, I really got the fever during the "Passion Play" period in terms of buying the albums myself (instead of just listening to friends' copies). Then I started going to see them perform live during the "Songs From The Wood" tour, then every year thereafter up till the "Catfish Rising" tour. They're definitely my all-time favorite musical entity.

  • Sorry to hear that! I first Tull perform Passion Play at Wembley UK in 1973. I also saw them on the Songs from the wood and CFR tours. My next concert is seeing Ian Anderson at the Barbican London this May for a solo gig, can't wait !! The last two times I saw them in the last two years were front row seats :-)). I hope you see them again soon.

  • Thank you very much for great upload! Pictures suit the song damn well. Medieval figures, birds and fantastic small kids not playing silly computer games, just having fun outdoor! I knew the track before, but now I have fuller knownledge what it is about.

  • Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I didn't really know how many Tull fans out there might've heard this song, but I got a kick out of introducing it to a few folks. And yes, isn't it miraculous that kids might possibly play at something other than video games? Well spotted! As for the medieval figures, years ago I wondered what it would've been like if Ian Anderson had been asked to portray The Pied Piper on something like Shelley Duvall's Storybook Theater. I think they used Eric Idol instead.

  • Never heard this before. Thanks for posting this Gothling. Very cool that Tull backed her up on this. Brilliant job with the video.

  • Thanks, Aqua. It really is a lot of fun digging up these precious little obscurities and sharing them. I bought Maddy's "Woman In The Wings" CD back when we lived in Berkeley, and I was thrilled to have finally gotten it in some form after having heard about it for so many years. I think I might even post the song that Martin Barre played electric guitar on, it's soooooo TULL. LOL! Thanks so much for watching my vids, pal.

  • This is such a fresh video! Thank you for introducing me to the wondeful Maddy Prior.

  • This is a lovely video, sweetie. You found just the right images to go with the song. I love the song, too, as you know. Great job! Hugs. :)

  • Thanks, Sweetie. I always appreciate you taking a look at these clips, especially after you could hear me gradually piecing them together from off in the other room. And it's thanks to YOU that I have all of these spiffy software programs that are necessary to create these music vids of mine... Hugs to you!
