  • This is Dusty Springfield's "Knowing When to Leave" chorus.

  • Where does this happen in the actual show?

  • @dreamcoat12 This is the opening

  • In the 70s when the original was running my parents came home from the city with their friends and the four of them were buzzing and could NOT stop RAVING about "Promises, Promises'". I was too young to appreciate...............they were musicians and kept talking about how difficult BB and HD's score was going to be to sing and play. Now, almost 40 years later, I get it! All those key changes, sharps and flats.....omg! I love those long, strong chorus lines.

  • I wouldn't say the choreography is too sexual. It's sexy yet smart...and very 60s. I'm in love with it. And with such a strong chorus of dancers, it works perfectly. Remember, this revival was set in 1962, not 1968, when the original production debuted, so several production aspects are slightly different. The choreo in H2$, which debuted in 1961, is similarly smart and sexy; I think it's ironic that Ashford is moving from 60s to 60s musical and can't wait to see his new choreography soon.

  • Just saw this on Broadway, it was AMAZING! I absolutely loved it! And it was hilarious!

  • Awful, anachronistic choreography. This show is closing and losing a lot of money. The leads are so talented and so terribly miscast.

  • @pudgeuncle Why?! I thought it was great, I saw it live. It was funny. :( I don't mean to step on your opinion, but really… why do ya think it sucked?

  • @pudgeuncle The choreography is too sexual for the time period. Chenoweth is God's gift to musical theater but she is WAY too old to play Fran. Her reviews were attempting to be kind but her being ignored for any awards sends a distinct message. Sean Hayes is talented but only a passable singer in a role which deserves more vocal power. I love the show, especially since I worked on a production ages ago where Tony winner Beth Leavel played Fran. The reviews for this revival were mediocre.

  • @pudgeuncle Seriously? Kristin is youthful for being in her early 40s and I never thought of the part of Fran as being a super young woman anyway. I'm glad you appreciate her talent but I disagree with your opinion regarding this show. I was fortunate enough to see it last August and I thought it was really well done.

  • @mimmar3891 A woman in her 20's showing Fran Kubelick's poor judgement makes her character more empathatic than an older woman who is reasonably expected to know better. Chenoweth is by far the oldest actress I have ever heard of being cast in this role. The original star was 28, Shirley MacLaine was 26 in the movie, and Beth Leavel was only 24..this tells you something. Several critics commented that Chenoweth appeared to be an older sister and not a love interest.

  • This was the best show I've seen on Broadway in YEARS. YEARS people, YEARS. Sean Hayes was amazing. The staging was amazing. OMG I think I'm hyperventilating. If you are lucky enough to be in NYC, and lucky enough to be able to afford a ticket, this is the show to see. DO IT NOW!!! FANTASTIC . . . Four thumbs up!!!!!

  • Sean Hayes is a god. And Kristin Chenoweth is a goddess. They are INcredible. I would very much like to have Sean's babies.

  • this musical was terrific i loved it

  • Interesting to see this again aftre I saw it on Broadway. on their stage they have tracks in the floor where their chairs are attached so when they swing them around they go rihgt where they were supposed to -- here they started to take off a bit lol.

@jernyon -- would you rather they were in tights? They have to be in suits for the story - and the style of this musical IS cheezy and flamboyant.

  • .,ok, that was horrible!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sorry...but every time I watch dancers in suits it seems like it just emphasizes how gay they are. I don't care how many "manly" tumbles they do.

  • @jernyon2003 if you were a dancer you would know that on a broadway stage, every movement you do has to be OVER exaggerated to an extent that they have to be able to tell what you're doing even in the nose bleed section way up in the balcony. especially at a theatre like Radio City is huge. So they have to be even more exaggerated for the people sitting way back there.

  • @faggyboy2 Wow...that was horribly condescending and catty. You are aptly named. I happen to be a dancer...and have been quite some time. I thoroughly understand exaggerated movement and pictures on a stage. What I don't understand is making dancers in suits do choreography that makes them look UBER flamboyant. They are wearing suits and dancing with their "gals"...butch up the movement a little...see the video of Fosse the number with the 3 guys in tanks with the sirens. Butchest dance ever

  • @jernyon2003

i know i'm opening a real costo-size can of worms here, but not every man who dances on broadway is gay

  • @cazia9 That's very true... but for the record I was not saying they were...it was more a comment on the choreography.

  • @jernyon2003

fair enough, but you can see how it might come across like that?

  • @cazia9 Yes I've told everyone that but no one listens!

  • @jernyon2003 .. does it matter?

  • @clevm002 stylistically, yes. As choreog. or director you need to make pictures, moving pictures, that tell and support your story. If you have guys dancing w/ "their girls" and THE MOVEMENT (not the guys) projects that the men would rather be dancing w/ each other...then you need to re-think your choreography...if you have DANCERS that cannot step-touch without a purse falling on the stage...you need to rethink your choreography...or your dancers. It's their JOB to make us believe.

  • @jernyon2003 .. but its a comedy.. its supposed to be campy.. thats why its funny..

  • I saw Promises, Promises on Broadway back in May. It's awesome to see the overture dance again, even if it's a shorter version. :)

  • Im so sorry but this should have won the damn award!!

    AMAZING
