Thank god for The Drums. Matt & Kim-ish/Cure-esque/The Smiths/upbeat/fun/80s/surfwave. Refreshing. After hearing a couple tracks on SIRIUS XMU, I finally downloaded their full album "Summertime!" yesterday..and have yet to stop. DAMN. SO GOOD.
yes! new order's influence on today's music is huge. the vast majority of indie groups are doing the same stuff NO did a couple decades ago. it's not a new trend either...for those saying this sounds like the cure, where do you think the cure got their ideas?
@Bakuninite87 They also don't really sound that much alike (post Movement, anyway)--New Order incorporated influences from Disco, Hi-NRG, and even R&B, which aren't present in Joy Division. I actually think this sounds much more Marc Almond/Soft Cell, especially the vocal.

ha ha ha What depression, I am a fan of Joy Division and New Order BUT!!! They are over rated. They got their name for being in the big Manchester scene and for Ian Curtis killing himself. If you listen to their albums that I have got they are not anything special. A lot of song are fillers and are very boring. If I was in Manchester in the late 70's then I would probably be more fond of it.
This message shall address DRDOWNBROWNS only. I am actually horrified!!! The thought of the Smiths as mere Pop you clearly have no understanding of the band.
1.They signed to rough trade AN independent (think about that)
2.watch the video of charming man on TOTP where mozza sings into a bunch of flowers. His stand against the BBC, and not wanting to mime like all other POP artists of the time.
3.Suffer little children tackled the delicate subject moors murders.
The Drums sound more accurately like Orange Juice - sounding utterly joyous while singing about melancholic affairs. The Cure thing is slightly there, but seems they're destined to be attached to anything vaguely 80s why people try to figure out their bastardized sound.
Because the smiths are too pop. Whats nice about the drums is that they are pretty down to earth. This is such a good song. I may be a bit biased however. Connor (the drummer for the drums) is my Band teachers son. haha lol
Pop as in popular. Mainstream. That kind of thing. Based on my description of the drums as being "down to earth" i figured you would be educated enough to figure that out. Its not that complex. Had I have described The Drums as indie and The Smiths as Pop, i would understand your confusion. But I didnt, which makes you ignorant. Jerk (haha, i had to add that... im not actually angry... at all. I just wanted to clarify what i mean. I dont need you to hate back. )

I'd have said these were more like The Smiths than anything, they really mention them a lot in the NME article, and also, fucking love this song.

The Cure was way before New Order and was around the same time as Joy Division.
Bakuninite87 2 years ago 2
I don't think anyone is saying this sounds like Seventeen Seconds. The Cure didn't adopt this style until 1985.
evancss 2 years ago
But one could say that New order are Joy division.
martinbond2003 2 years ago
One could, but NO is not JOY DIVISION.They lack the one essential ingredient and that is IAN CURTIS.

If you were going to make comparisons surely you'd go with The Cure.

Oh man, I love the drums but please dont insult The Cure by likening the two!!! Smith is far superior! =P
