lance finishing the Leadville 100 with a flat tire

i would like to know why the most prominent figure in us cycling felt the need to ride out the race on a flat. surely he has changes his own tire before?

So how much time did he lose due to the flat tire? Would he have finished in less time if he'd changed it?
