That was interesting to see John Sutherland speaking. I wonder what his first impression of the book was; he's kind of portrayed as immature and stubborn, a bit of a blockhead, in the book. At least that's how I took it. Rather, that's how I think Pirsig saw him, but I could sort of identify with him, I guess. I hate getting bogged down in details, also. I'd much rather just take my car to a mechanic, pay my money, and go about my business. I don't hate technology; I just don't care how it works
He tells the naked truth. Even the truth on creativity and sad but true on academic philosophy. I know it (got a PhD). Everything is exactly true in every little bit.
I loved the book very much. but I found Lila to be totally life changing. If you have not read that 1, please do. You will be very glad you did. I read it in three days and wanted more.
@timnypafford i wish he was writing a third final book, zen and the art of will always be .... more original then lila? But i think lila has taught me more so far... got 150 pages to go, and im sad to know thats all hes got left :(
I HAVE to thank you for the "On the Road" DVD, the 2nd of your series about Mr. Robert Pirsig and his phylosophy: as Marsha properly commented it, Mr. Pirsig embodies the Beauty both in his way of speaking about LIFE and in his noble figure.
Mr. Pirsigs book saved my body read it in1975. I was 24 racing motorcycles ,breaking some bones. This for a trophy or a few hundred dollars a race and a male ego boost. Getting very good but why was I doing something that was fun but fairly risky. I do not give a rats ass what anyone else thinks of the book it came into my life at the right time. Still raced another 10 years but did it more for fun stopped the professional shit. Racing and life stopped being a compulsion after this read.
OK self pitying loners, I bought your stinking book tonight, (112308) and I will see what all the fuss is about, If this turns out to be a lord of the friggin rings thing, hippy heads will roll!
hahah easy man, its not for everyone. but anyone who reads will understand that every action you take in life should be done with care, with the best quality you can muster. and its not like LOTR... at all
@lifeinpictures lol i had similar idea before reading... coincidentally i read The Way of Zen by Alan watts just before reading Zen and the Art of MM and it helped. But I don't think you have to read on Zen Buddhism first, but read with an open mind. Curious to hear your thoughts afterwards...
I am still a bit overwhelmed after reading the book(finished it just now. and started
reading long ago. Interrupted reading resulted of lack of time). I am thinking about Chris. In the prologue I read he had been murdered just prior to his 23 age. I still need time to contemplate over the book and intending to read the sequel. A great enriching book of Kulturbärer. as Swedish - I know what that means. The book bears the whole civilazation on its shoulders. That is its greatness!
I felt the same way. I highly recommend that you follow up with Lila. I actually think it makes more sense than his first book. But one without the other is a disservice to both.
Thanks for "Arrive without travelling" DVD: a chance for us all to "feel" amongst friends who use Mr. Pirsig's MoQ to "read" our days...Great job of the DVD editor!!
I enthousiastically THANK Mr Pirsig every single day since I read his illuminating thougths...i wish HE knows how grateful I am for all his efforts in being clear and useful for all mankind: i live a colourful life now that i can make use of this meaningful set of ideas, where my life was gray and gray and gray making use of the available set of ideas i was growing with...I wish YOU the best, from Italy.
I just finished intro to ethics.. now these names mentioned aren't so arbitrary. I'm on part IV. I can't wait for spring so I can ride again.

This is a very interesting book. I read it first in 1975 and I'm reading it again now, this time with a little more understanding.

I live in Rochester and sometimes wonder if I've ever met Lila or the lawyer she was involved with.

Really, one of THEE books I recommend to any true seeker....
"Zen And The Art Of M.M." and its sequel "Lila" force you to confront all that stuff you know inside but are afraid to admit.
A real shocker --that is, waker-upper--for the Western Culture.
