I agree. It doesn't say that they did a bunch of computer analysis on acoustics or vibrations and worked up from there. It just says they made a bunch of sketches and then build what looked best.

Some of the very best speaker systems in the world by B&W, Revel, Wilson Audio, Focal, MBL, etc are ported and they cost upwards of $250,000. Some of the best subs are sealed, so really doesn't matter weather it,s ported or sealed, it all depends on what the designers are trying to achieve with thier speaker. each has certain characteristics. now a poor designed vented system can sound bad or bloated have one base note sound but done right, either way can yield awesome sound.

Nice video, great looking speakers too...

But, I don't know why JBL would use a ported system. You don't get accurate and as detailed bass with a ported system. So, that kinda boggles my mind a little.

I bet they just use the ports as means to vent the system, to help lower distortion and not to boost level. So essentially the ports aren't going to contribute much to the sound.

No it lowers the third harmonic distortion by magnitudes if I am not wrong.

@Site4Animation Properly implemented porting adds very little distortion, not audible. In speakers as capable as these distortion due to porting would be at levels no sane person will want to listen.

@bsod4u2 Indeed, it can even REDUCE distortion if implemented correctly. A vent is tuned to resonate at a particular low frequency, thereby "helping" the woofer out.  Woofer excursion is reduced greatly at the tuning point, allowing the speaker to operate within a more linear part of its motor and reducing nonlinear distortion. If you've heard a bad vented box, it means the woofer is crap to begin with, the port/box/woofer combination isn't tuned correctly, or the port isn't correctly sized.

It's an awesome design. Though short on technical detail, I can find all the technical elements online with a little effort. What this does is provide a perspective on the design heritage and process of refinement, which won't be a part of any technical manual or tech sheet.

I think its was more of how the design came to life as the seond edition of the original. The drivers and performance were documented in literature and tecnical briefs in a press kit at time of launch. I did get to hear them and the sound is really good...a new level of performance indeed. Obviously not for everyone given the price tag, but left a positive impression on those that had a chance to hear the demo in the hotel suite

It's funny how this entire video focuses on cabinet design and mere cosmetics, yet reveals absolutely nothing about the drivers that are to be used. Personally, if I were to spend that much money on speakers I'd be a bit concerned about more than just how they look. Just because it's pretty doesn't mean it's responsiveness, frequency reproduction and power handling capabilities, and longevity are automatically worth the money.
