But in the episode "greatest hits" in the third season there is a scene where Charlie is singing this song in this exact place but Desmond is not there. My guess is that this happened after Drive Shaft slip and Charlie went broke.

Charlie singing "you're gonna be the one that saves me", as Desmond walks out of the building, as of season 6, seems to have, in retrospect, perhaps taken on the mantra of clever foreshadowing, as Desmond seems to be the only thing or person capable of destroying MIB. It seems that Desmond really will be, perhaps quite literally, "the one that saves [all of the losties]."

In retrospect one of the greatest moments of LOST. It's amazing that Desmond did end up saving Charlie later on and he was Desmond's Wonderwall in a way because of course Charlie was looking at Desmond through the "wonder wall" that saved Desmonds life and took Charlie's.
