  • what is this strange sound at 9:14?!!

  • 1 person missed the like button.

  • I love his analogy to printing and taking the negative with that of performing a musical score!

  • Could you imagine if he were here to experience Photoshop

  • His comments on "electronic" (i.e. digital) photography are at 7:02.

  • i'm glad to hear that adams embraced digital photography, even in its infancy. i was disappointed by all the comments in part 1 shunning digital photography. im pretty sure if you spoke to most respectable photographers, they would not be so concerned with digital/film as they would composition and vision

  • Amazingly prescient comments about computer technology. And he's so welcoming to it.

  • i had to do a paper for photo for school and i wanted to do it on the great Ansel Adams and you video helped me a lot. ;) thanx so much!

  • Been watching nothing but rangefindergeneral videos the past few days. Thanks for uploading, hopefully there's more to come!

On another note, Ansel Adams died the year after this. :(

  • the one who posted this is also a genius, thanks a lot for posting. i learned a lot

  • Also interesting to see how optimistic about the digital future of photography. Some of art photographers are drawing the distinction between analogue vs digital saying the former is more superior. In 1983 when this interview was taped scanners were new and he would embrace the digital developments in photography that have taken place especially in the last ten years

  • One thing I've notice is that any master of his/her craft is that they are very, very humble.

  • Thank you Rangefindergeneral! :)

  • Part two is great to hear his philosophy. So many people argue that Ansel Adams made perfect negatives that would magically print perfectly. This shows that it's OK to manually manipulate the print to get your personal interpretation down on paper. Snotty photographers be damned ;-)

  • Was it Adams who also superimposed the moon into one of his desert landscapes?

  • @weenyone Ibelieve that was Adam's Moonrise Over Hernandez.

  • So interesting to hear his analogies to music. I knew he was considering being a concert pianist at one point but this interview delves deeper into that side of him which I like very much. I had never heard him speak before either and I was struck by his frank and thoughtful answers.

  • First time I've ever seen/heard him talk. I am not disappointed. Rather, I am thrilled. Thanks for posting this.

  • u can see intelligence and passion and experience rolled up in this man. i am sure he had his problems and hardships but my point is we all need to reach his level somehow whether it be in photography or whatever we do. shame people hate and want to destroy

  • listening to this man fills my heart with love and passion.

  • Fascinating that he was excited about digital imaging!

  • word!!!!... unfortunately he didn't get to live long enough to see digital photography flourish since his passing

  • Dear Rangefindergeneral

Thanks so much for going to the trouble to do all this. I am enjoying your choice of Photography documentaries. Immensely.

    Ian

  • he was amaizing as a photographer, and from what I see he was a wonderful person to... maestro thank you

  • Yes seems like a around nice guy, his autobiography is an ok read.

    stay tuned for Bob Capa.

  • The music idea is just great. I agree.

  • Loved his comments " those who Bracket don,t really know what there doing". I,m amazed that he went and just took one shot and knew it would turn out great. Truly a genius.

  • Yes he was a master with a meter.

I still like to bracket when in doubt.

And you need to know most of the work was done in the darkroom, if he was alive today he would love photoshop.

  • I like to bracket too. I would be great to be that confident and really know the shot was ok. I,m using a Film Medium format just now and i need to get better at my light readings! He's definitly a inspiration.i agree, i really think he would of embraced photoshop. Thanks for posting.

  • Well, its not as if He never bracketed. He would often do two exposures. Manytimes however, when working with view cameras, once may be all you get. Gingerly sliding in the dark slide not to move your camera. Gingerly pulling out the holder, flipping it, gingerly sliding it back in, gingerly sliding out the dark slide, then hoping like hell you haven't moved anything.

  • Ansel Adams is great. What a life. What a talent. I envy his life and experiences.
