I use to get these in my backyard which backed up to the desert in AZ. I was in my pool one day as one of these came thru, picked up the Table Umbrella which wasnt anchored down tightly, the Dust Devil picked it up and whipped it of course to where I was in the pool knocking me in the eye bone. Ouch!!! You can sure hear those when your in the house! LOL!
You're right, these are just dust devils. What they are, are rising columns of very hot air. Heat rises, correct? The sun heats our desert floor up....which makes the air next to the ground hotter than the cooler air up above it. So, as it rises upwards, it spins. Spinning is nature's most efficient method of moving fluids from pt. A to pt. B. Air moves in a fluid nature. Flush your toilet, the water spins, right? Sometimes we can see 5-10 of these going at one time in the summer here in Az..
We realize they are just dust devils and that they are common in the desert. We were just sharing this with our friends from the Midwest that may have never seen one before. Thanks for watching!

That's just a dust devil. They happen all the time, not a big deal. It's desert so yeah, normal.
