I love the tradition and dances of all the Island cultures. what is the purpose of the people who come up and touch the dancer?? Does this symbolize something?
you reward them for the dance with money hence the baby oil or coconut oil is used to stick the money to the body. Its more a recent thing being done in the last 40-50 years. It didn't or rather wasn't allowed before.
@GunnerKal the baby oil/coconut oil or "lolo tonga" shimmering on her skin, symbolizes the purity of the young maiden dancing. people are putting money on the dancer. usually the girl dancing is representing a village or a side of the family (for example, if this were a wedding, a girl would be dancing from the grooms side or vise versa). after which the money is given to the person or couple for which the event is held. that's just Tongan Tau'olunga 101 for yah. glad you loved it.
She's so much better than my kid. The only part that she remembered was pasi va'e and fakatau pasi. We have to translate the whole song for her. She was 7 yrs at the time. She's not any better now at 20.

This video is the perfect example why 2/3 of the tauolunga videos on youtube should never be uploaded in the first place-- because the dancer SUCKS!
