I haven't seen those USB->IDE and PSU adapters before. Although it makes sense that they exist :-) This is a nice solution if you have an old HD laying around, and would avoid buying an external drive. I'm going to invest in a NAS quite soon for backup purposes/centralization of media.
@InfernoV2 My desktop has 500 gig internal, 500 gig external, this was just an old extra I thought I could make use of, I have not upgraded in sometime but it is amazing what you can get now for the $.
@MaximumRD I've got 1TB internal, internal and a 1TB external. Not quite 3TB but near enough, 250GB in my laptop as well. I've no real need for the space in my desktop, but it's there if I need it which is awesome.
@InfernoV2 It wont be long until I do have to upgrade, I have a lot of files, just making videos takes up a lot of space, rule of PC you can never have too much storage space.
A HD Maxtor 40 Gig... I had one in a desktop computer and it crashed after 4 years of usage... and apparently, in forum discussions, the issue appeared for many users while doing a defrag and so impossible to boot again the HD after the corruption. Just telling you my experience with an exactly the same HD, same brand, same size... not saying that your HD is going to fail eventually soon.
@newcoleco LOL Hard drives are prone to failures, it happens, do you know how many MAXTOR 40 gig were made? Even different versions, it's a coincidence. Not a problem, I defrag on a regular basis and have even dropped this thing which I why I made this enclosure lol!
Cool I'll have to get one of those IDE to USB adaptors some time, could be handy for trying out old drives I have hanging around without messing about inside the PC.
why put it in the box. the heat would be higher then just having in the open. plug it in put on desk and use it. that harddrvie is the same size as the one that is in my comptuer now too and still have 11 Gb free. i don't downlaod much.
@james42519 I WAS using it like that. There will be no over heating issues, plenty of space above and around the hard drive, I have a real hard drive enclosure by LACIE that has no fan and fits tight that gets hotter than this. The reasons were as I stated to keep out dust, to reduce noise and just some minimal protection and just for the hell of it.
that's "Ghetto Fabulous"! ha ha! I want to make and enclosure out of legos, so if I can get some free legos via craigslist or something I'll make sure to do a video over it!
The only step lower then your ghetto case would be to just leave the drive sitting out in the open attached to your computer. Nothing quite like recycle mod!
I got 3 hard drives that i put in a asurion box they are a Maxtor 20gig IDE 3.5
hard drive, a Seagate 40gig 2.5 SATA hard drive and Western dlgltal 40gig 3.5 IDE hard drive

When you said Ghetto, i didn't realise how ghetto. Cardboard box, with a gouged hole in the side. Too ghetto for my liking.

Get some 3 ply wood and give it a nice paint job, it'd look sweet, especially with a few stickers on.

@MaximumRD Very true, and with the price of 1TB drives lowering very rapidly why not invest in one, or four. :D
