dont be afraid to let the drum sound louder! try not curling your hands when you hit it, instead use them kind of flat using only the palm, not the fingers when you hit it in the center which is your lows, and use your fingers when you hit the rim, which is your highs and you are going to get a better sound out of it, check one of my videos, might help! cheers

try a thin blanket (i use a beanie) to mute the drum so as to not steamroll over the didge.
