Todmorden Flood warning

if you translate the name Todmorden in german, the name is built about 2 words. death and murder. in connection with this sirens it is real strange...

I would shit myself if they played that siren. Why don`t they play a happy siren like play Artic Monkeys or something. At least people would be able so say "hey thats the flood siren but fuck it lets dance to the beat"

so do you get really bad floods or something? i live in the usa and we get flash flood warnings but usually theres only a couple inches of water in the streets and peoples basements get flooded, nothing life threatening. we have sirens, but they go off when a tornado is approaching.

@TheSpellerbee. The Floods can get bad at times, a few feet of water. The problem is that its a Valley, with a river running the through the bottom of it, so you get all the water running off the hills in heavy rain, and the river bursting its banks. A lot of flood defences have been built recently, so where we got maybe 2 or 3 floods a year, now its just like one a year and it has to get pretty bad for it to flood now

This is exactly the sound you hear before an actual air raid. I heard this noise from September 1940 to May 1941. Every single night the bombers came over to bring death, bombs, destruction and fire, 40,000 civilians were killed during the blitz on England and this was one of the last sounds they heard - now that is chilling.

@aasjss The river Calder is the main threat to Tod. The local council have just spent a small fortune putting in flood defences into the town. I believe the next test of the Siren will be on the 18th February 2011 at 11am. The Environment Agency webstie gives a notice of when they are to take place

@OldhamAthletic87KTF Hi I rang the environment agency to get the next date of the siren test and the lady informed me that to her knowledge there were no flood warning sirens in Todmorden! They don't seem to know there own business she said as far as she was aware there were no longer any sirens used by the flood warning service as warnings were given by text, email and telephone!

@harbottle99 That's a strange one, because it was set off and tested on the 15th March 2011 and I have another video of the siren being tested in February 2010, which I've never bothered to upload. So yeah, either the Enviroment agency doesn't know its arse from it's elbow or they just set the siren off for the hell of it haha. I'm pretty sure it's still in use though, because I've never been told any different and recieved no news to say the siren was going out of use.

UK doesnt have many new sirens for floods so they use old WWII sirens

These double ended air raid sirens, used from the last war until the early nineties when John Majors government scrapped the early warning system, were in fact two sirens, one on each end of a powerful three phase motor. One end had an impeller and casing with ten blades and corresponding appertures in the casing, the other end had twelve rotor blades and slots in the casing. This means the two sirens sound a minor third which is why they sound so ominous
