Its going to impact. The stupid astronomers said it will straight line in the orbit at closest of 4000km away however they are forgetting to factor in the gravity pull.
It's going to hit mars, turning mars into a huge fireball that will give the earth a second sun. We will no longer have nights. People will die from skin cancer, and those who dont will go crazy from sleep disorders. This is it, it is the end of the world. Just kidding. Probably won't hit anyway. I hope it does, it would be a good show, and it would be 1 less rock for us to worry about.
No I'm not kidding, because there are rocks far larger floating around out there. And it doesn't matter if it hits mars, it'll make no difference to us here.
Wrong, it will, you forget that Mars' atmosphere is thinner, so the asteroid will plow the planet faster and harder with less friction to slow it down. It will literally do damage to Mars. If it does, it will alter the orbit and IF MARS' orbit changes, all the other planets will be affected as well, including earth. This means Earth's climate weather will greatly be effected.
that's complete bs, asteroids impact other planets and their moons all the time and nothing's happened here before, and if anything does it's probably going to take several lifetimes to happen anyway.
You forget what pressure Might be under mars. If the planet gets hitk, there may be pressure under that will create a fisher to spew out and possible alter the planet.
I can see where you're coming from. It's theorised that we can do that same thing to asteroids and comets to alter their orbital paths. However, achieving that on such a scale (i.e. with a planet) seems a bit too farfetched. After all, larger rocks have hit the planets and Moons and I've never heard of such a result.
I realise it won't effect us on Earth if it was to impact Mars. I must confess I read your post in haste and misunderstood it. I thought you implied that we wouldn't need to worry about it if it was on course for the Earth because it was only ~50m diameter.
Not according to the NASA astronomers - it's only just been spotted flying past Earth and is already half-way to Mars. Their current assessment is a 1 in 75 risk of a strike on Mars on 30 January 2008.
Didn't happen! :D

if a meteor were to hit earth, isn't there a possibility it can get caught in our gravity? like the moon?
Godcaly123 4 years ago
The only way that could happen is if it was going slow enough...

Ya earths gravity isnt going to pull this thing in anymore than a high caliber bullet is affected by light wind.

You're an idiot, I would just like you to know that.

I'm guessing it will hit but it doesn't matter; it's only ~50 meters in diameter so it's the least of our worries.

You're kidding right... An asteroid that size would destroy an area the size on London...

This is true. There is no chance an asteroid impact could change the orbit of the planet in question.

About three megatons of energy is estimated if it dos impact on mars.
