@21quandary Evolutionary ladders is a silly term, and higher and lower are nonsense concepts. Internally carrying a foetus instead of laying eggs is a trade off, taking on an additional burden for the mother in exchange for an increased survival rate of the young.
For some reptiles and fish the eggs are carried internally for a similar reason.

As to the most efficient form of reproduction, it depends on the environment. If a pregnant mammal can't run away from a predator, it won't do the fetus much good if she's dead.
