Physical condition of operators - there are a lot of overweight operators, sure. There are a bunch of fit operators, too. I know 2 of them off the top of my head who are avid bike riders, and take their dual band HT's with them, and talk on the repeaters and simplex while riding.

I agree the tests are a joke, but Burt, if we couldn't bring the LCM, lowest common denominator into the hobby, it would have died circa 1985? I had my college class all get Tech licenses, they're electrical engineers. Series was N1Y**. Then years later all have expired.
As for CW, I have to admit I've always been negative towards it. I considered it old-fashioned system and an old boys club to keep out the trailer trash (to use an American term). But Burt talks commonsense and I'm going to learn morse code to get more out of the hobby. Cheers Burt ;-)

My BMI is below average, I use CW, the times I have given a 59 report is extremely rare, I have never used HI except in a CW QSO, never heard of DFQ, never heard of 4ID, don't do contests, only use homebrew equipment, and so on.
If this is typically American I would suggest CQ DX and talk to Europeans only.

I have been a ham for eight years. I'm 35, an Extra, use CW almost exclusively, not overweight, and does public service comms. I am not the stereotypical ham. I love the hobby, and operate whenever I have the chance. My only beef with the hobby is the contest weekend because most of my free time is on the weekend. A big contest shuts down the bands for an entire weekend, making it impossible to carry on a meaningful QSO. Other than that, I love the hobby. 73, DD

You hit the nail on the head about the "hi-hi" business. In fact, the local repeater that you hear that most often around here is referred to as "TLC" or "The Learning Channel"....keep it up!
One thing that always makes me laugh is we hams are expected to be "professional". However, "professional" does NOT mean weghing 400 lbs, smell like a hog barn, drive in a vehicle with 10 antennas mounted on it, and have 5 Hts on your belt. Thanks for this reality check. I like ham radio as I was introduced into it at the age of 15 in 1984 by my dad who lived 200 miles away. He got me into it as a means to staying in touch. Earned novice ticket,learned Morse code, and operated for years in CW. Got out of the hobby about 10 years after because of the reasons you mentioned. Just got back into it 2 years ago, and glad I did not give up on it 100%,. There are some real asshats in the hobby! Weed through the tech junkies and its fine!

I want a REAL RS report because it tells me how my set up is working on a particular band under certain conditions. The reports are meant to help other hams. Since points are not dependent on the reports, why lie? Why not be honest to fellow hams so we can all tweak our systems to be better. I did the contest to see if my system was working but will never participate in another contest. Good work, Burt. Keep having fun with the hobby.
Burt, I worked the 10 meter contest today. My first effort at a contest as I am just starting HF. 10 countries on two continents plus a handful of states and provinces. Every RS report was 5-9! Even those contacts that required me to repeat my call sign or state code a few times. 5-9? On a homebrew off-center-fed dipole resonant at 14.200 but showing 2.1 SWR at 28.5? Sure I use a tuner but that doesn't improve the antenna, it just tricks the radio into thinking the antenna is better than it is.
@TeakPhillips you will find during a contest everyone is a 5-9 this is not necessarily true when working stations outside a contest. enjoy the hobby and take care or if you don't enjoy the hobby there is still C.B.

My BMI is below average, I use CW, the times I have given a 59 report is extremely rare, I have never used HI except in a CW QSO, never heard of DFQ, never heard of 4ID, don't do contests, only use homebrew equipment, and so on.
If this is typically American I would suggest CQ DX and talk to Europeans only.
What is the use of ham radio? What is the use of a vacation, or watching a movie?

I dislike when hams say 'my name is Tom, like Tango, Oscar, Mike ...... Like? Your name is either Tom and Tango Oscar Mike is Tom? It's not like Tom! On another point QRP is not 5 watts through an antenna with a 6db gain. Winds me up when someone announces themselves as QRP, I expect them to be running 500mw on some home brew CW kit instead of 5000mw from an 817. Also in full agreement with this guy.

I have been a ham for eight years. I'm 35, an Extra, use CW almost exclusively, not overweight, and does public service comms. I am not the stereotypical ham. I love the hobby, and operate whenever I have the chance. My only beef with the hobby is the contest weekend because most of my free time is on the weekend. A big contest shuts down the bands for an entire weekend, making it impossible to carry on a meaningful QSO. Other than that, I love the hobby. 73, DD

One thing that always makes me laugh is we hams are expected to be "professional". However, "professional" does NOT mean weghing 400 lbs, smell like a hog barn, drive in a vehicle with 10 antennas mounted on it, and have 5 Hts on your belt. Todays hams are at best laughable in todays society and an embarassment to the overall health of the hobby.

Thanks for this reality check. I like ham radio as I was introduced into it at the age of 15 in 1984 by my dad who lived 200 miles away. He got me into it as a means to staying in touch. Earned novice ticket,learned Morse code, and operated for years in CW. Got out of the hobby about 10 years after because of the reasons you mentioned. Just got back into it 2 years ago, and glad I did not give up on it 100%,. There are some real asshats in the hobby! Weed through the tech junkies and its fine!

I want a REAL RS report because it tells me how my set up is working on a particular band under certain conditions. The reports are meant to help other hams. Since points are not dependent on the reports, why lie? Why not be honest to fellow hams so we can all tweak our systems to be better. I did the contest to see if my system was working but will never participate in another contest. Good work, Burt. Keep having fun with the hobby.

Burt, I worked the 10 meter contest today. My first effort at a contest as I am just starting HF. 10 countries on two continents plus a handful of states and provinces. Every RS report was 5-9! Even those contacts that required me to repeat my call sign or state code a few times. 5-9? On a homebrew off-center-fed dipole resonant at 14.200 but showing 2.1 SWR at 28.5? Sure I use a tuner but that doesn't improve the antenna, it just tricks the radio into thinking the antenna is better than it is.

@TeakPhillips you will find during a contest everyone is a 5-9 this is not necessarily true when working stations outside a contest. enjoy the hobby and take care or if you don't enjoy the hobby there is still C.B.

no threats intended old man. but it would please me to see your face rubbed in the concrete.im not the one you should worry about im sure every body " loves" you as much as i do. your local police must be assholes too if they buddy up with a "man ot the world such as your self". since they are your buddys have them trace me down and then you can stop by and see me, hell if you feel scared bring one of your local police with you as i will not call the police or hide behind them.

You should add the following 1) The ever-pissing contest about who has the best radio/antenna. 2) Those who are constantly asking reports "How is mi signal...how is my signal now?...how's my audio ....how is it now? Shit! the just simply can't get satisfied.

Burt, you're absolutely right about everything. I've been threaded over the years over the radio for whatever the reason. When you get to see them at hamfest etc. a common response is "I don't want to get any trouble".As for me, ham radio is like having a bunch of friends every night at my living room talking about, whatever. Contest, etc are no-sense. The most interesting think I've experienced on ham radio is when you get to know someone from another country and share cultural backgrounds etc.
