i just put the same set up in my el camino, except with an edelbrock EPS intake and the cam was from summitt but its a dual pattern 268/272...im VERY happy with, especially since you can get all the parts for $1,500 or less...and chevy hi performance did a build up called the good wrench quest where they used the same build up except the cam was one stage up over what we run and it put down 408 horses and 430 lb ft of torque.
people use the vortec l31 heads because they flow pretty damn good and make good power. there the new school comparrison to the old camal hump heads. Ive got a 350 .60 over with vortecs, it makes around 375 horse.
Look at flow numbers. Vortecs die off at 510 lift stock. They flow just as good as AFR's up till a lil after 500 lift. Chamber mods and pocket porting help these heads but not too much.
@2stage90 true, but the afrs are quite a bit more expensive, so when making a selection, you have to decide if that difference is worth the extra 600 bucks or so that your spending...at 600 a pair, the vortecs are about the most economical choice you can make, but at the same time, what you mentioned is a downfall.
Some of the older heads did flow fairly well, but take in the the vortecs are way newer design and outflow pretty much any stock small block GM head ever built.
why wouldn't you put vortec heads on an older engine. Unless it is an aluminum block they will perform the same other than other accessories such as rotating assembly and intake stages.
yes they will but if your talkng about vortec heads you will have to use a vortec intake. And if your not than you can use them but you will have to use a drill to angle the two center bolt holes on the intake manifold. any more questions just ask
Vortec heads do not have "center intake bolt holes. Vortec heads only have 4 intake bolts on each head. 2 in each corner and they go about straight down. Vortec head casting numbers end in either "906" or "062"......
@boxerfan2 unless its an LS series motor then ANY small block chevy will bolt into any chevy vehicle that came with an SBC or could be ordered with one...you gotta love the versatility of GM products. and, the LS series motors can be bolted up to TH350, TH400, and 700R4 transmissions with no mods as well, although with an LS there are some other mods that you do have to make.
no ..the only older heads that where close where the "honeycomb" heads on the older corvettes the internal curve of the vortec is less extreme and porting is bigger also you had 3 mm more room to oversize your valves than older style heads and a strong platform for springs
i have a 383 with vortec heads proform 1.7 roller rockers cyclone itake hyperautic pistons msd distributor and a comp cams magnum 266 roller cam. I dont like to brag but it is a beast. i have it in a 90 gmc single cab short bed. i havent raced it on the strip yet. but it pulls my racecar like its nothing. and it is actually a very heavy car.
(Drowling)..My dream build..except I plan to use diff intake and cam..yours is good though. Sounds AWESOME!!! what is it going in?

because they are higher flowing then the old heads
