they may provide service for 3 years, but it looks like they are not updating any maps. The most available maps are 2008. i would get a garmin nuvi for $130 much much accurate too.
how did you connect to the internet using this device whike your in your car? is there something special you have to buy? and can u use your phone to tether this unit to it?
You only need internet if you use the free GPS maps and app(s) because they download the maps on the fly - OR you can use pre-dowloaded maps for a pre-set route. If you go off-route it will need internet to get different maps, however.
You have to pay to use Wayfinder's routing function but running the app and downloading maps for it is free.
You dont have to be connected to wifi to use the gps... but u do have to pay to use the full function of the gps. When u purchase it u have a trial version of using the gps. If us decide to us the gps without purchase, the streets would not be label for you, but it would show you where your at and your movement but wont talk to you.
theres no pricing for you to use the nokia, except w/e your phone has to pay for. if you go online w/ the nokia, itll get billed to your phone, etc. this means you connect to your friends bluetooth and go online, he gets the bill :)
I'm seriously considering buying the Nokia N810 and I appreciate your video on it, it really makes me want to buy it! I was wondering, does the GPS work over the internet connection or can it receive the GPS with no internet? Also, do you pay monthly for the GPS? I plan on using it in college as a mini computer but the GPS feature is a huge bonus, but being a poor college student I cant afford another monthly bill.
This is not a phone, it is an internet tablet. It accesses the internet via wifi, not cellular networks. The GPS unit is included and has limited functionality out of the box. The fancy software demo'd in this video is an extra $130 (I think).
what is the monthly payments on this phone? like is the gps a monthly payment how much all together is that right there that you have in this video, im very interested in getting this phone, plz get back to me on this..
Just ordered my N810. Can you just make it clear (assuming you know). The subscription does or does not include traffic updates.
My first impression was $130 is too much. But if it does include traffic updates for 3 years and the updates are accurate and upto date then it is very reasonable.
Is it true that you have to pay for a per month subscription for the GPS service? I hope not, i read somewhere that it's $128 for three months. Pleas tell me this is not true!
I was shocked when I found out the routing and directional navigation in Nokia n810 is a purchased item, i.e. $130/3yrs. This is exactly the reason I decided not to purchase a N810. I think the additional charges for GPS service, for N810, are unconscionable. Bad decision Nokia! No GPS is a major turn-off.
The built-in GPS hardware is good, but the free mapping software is disappointingly limited and not useful. Users who want voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation will have to pay more for the full version of WayFinder - Why pay $130/36 months? A $100 GPS will provide voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation. Potential N810 buyers are probably better off waiting and n810 without real GPS doesn't justify the $479 price tag. The GPS was supposed to be the killer application of n810. Disappointing!
I can understand the business model for subscription navigation services though - Maps, waypoints, and more have to be constantly updated. We'll see how good Wayfinder does with updates and how often they are pushed out to see if a subscription can be justified. Either way - I am glad it has a GPS in it.
I got the n810 a few days ago, unfortunately, it is not a REAL GPS system. The n810 GPS only shows YOUR current position and it doesn't give you the direction on how to get to your destination. Unless you subscribe and pay $130/36 months. So, if you make a wrong turn...you are lost...the n810 simply shows your current position. That is unfortunate, cause it does everything else very well...but for me I will return mine. Don't want to carry 3 gages (GPS, N810, phone) with me.
Yap, not very useful and slow...I simply wanted a basic GPS with WIFI...but it appears Nokia missed the boat on this one. Unless you subscribe and pay, the n810 GPS is useless. The whole point of a GPS is to provide you with information on how to get to your destination. Sorry to say, mine is going to back to the store. I'll just buy a $200 GPS system without any monthly/annual fees. Thanks.
thanks for the demonstration. Couple of questions, does the wayfinder map software installed in the Nokia provide txt to speech capabilities for driving directions ( street names )? Also, the vent mount; where did you get it and how much did it cost?
No problem! There is a map application preinstalled, but the voice guidance and navigation features will be a subscription service. I don't think it does text-to-speech on street names. The vent mount part was from proclipusa and cost depends on the model of your car.
/me cries. I can't wait for this to come out! I'm a 770 user, I didn't see the point of upgrading to an N800 but this thing fills all my wants! GPS & a Keyboard? Score!
I think Nokia stole their keyboard design from HTC because it appears to be the same as the one on my Mogul and other HTC smartphones.
Thanks for the informative video. Do you need to be connected to the internet to use the GPS?

from what i have read, the n810 has a wifi receiver, so if you are in a free wifi hot spot, internet access is free.
if you are not in a wifi hot spot you can connect the n810 to another phone with a internet data plan via bluetooth and then get internet access.
the n810 has an internal gps receiver, it does not use internet to function.
