No. Apple hard drives are not proprietary in addition, because you can install any hard drive you want. The cable might be, but that doesn't make the drive proprietary. Windows has come along way to become stable, but atleast it has done it without restricting everything like Apple does.
Windows supports everything and yet it is so amazing stable today, i have yet to experience a crash in Windows 7.

I upgraded my macbook pro with a general laptop hard drive I bought online, and it works like it should. Macs don't use proprietary hard drives. Yes, they did attach a temperature cable to the original HD, but that doesn't prevent you from installing a new hard drive.
