Yeah... maces are 1 handed weapons meant to be equipped with a kite shield and used to take down heavily armored opponents, not 2 handed and on unarmored opponents, this is rubbish.
long sword is more agile. mace wasn't designed for dueling, simply to break through heavily armored foes (who wouldn't be moving all that quickly to begin with). switch weapons and i believe swordsman would've won again.
If you allow trapping, catch the mace with the crossguard, roll your sword over and step on/over the mace. From there you can crank into his body, drop a collarbone chop, or even a stab to the chest by dropping to one hand and holding the mace down with the other.
try to get you and your partner into the final pose and you'll see what I'm saying.
Interesting attempt, but I guess real maces will be damaging long swords if sword men block. After all, one is mean to smash while the other is to chop down.
the mace is more cumbersome but would have been swung pretty hard and it must way alot more than the longsword which was a more elegant weapon and contrary to popular belief more of a last resort secondary weapon on the battlefield. i think hamish from braveheart with his axe depicts more or less how such a weapon would be used eventhough there are some differences of mechanics from ax to mace
right on most of that but the mace was often about the same weight as the longsword. On the other hand most of the weight was at the top of the mace! Hard to get it moving or stopping because of the weight distribution itself!
The guy with the mace wouldn't be able to swing it like that unless he was superman.
thanks. these mixed weapons combat must be fun because its not something regularly practiced two different weapons, one for cutting and thrusting the other one for swinging and smashing, its cool to see the advantages and disadvantages
i think if it had that much more weight, PLUS the weigth distribution problem, you wouldnt be able to wield a shield properly. perhaps it was a bit heavier, but not that much. it would be still smashing down everything.
exactly... by the way, for those of you that think the mace was a monster sized thing you should know that you can actually read the weights and measures of these weapons. The worlds foremost expert on Western European weapons was Ewart Oakeshott and his work shows that the medieval mace weighed in at about 3.75 lbs although there was a later, less common type that weighed in at around 5 lbs. Check Myarmorydotcom for accurate info on the medieval mace from respected historians and scholars.
This is amatuer, I can tell by basic swings. You be pro when you start using your other hand. If it was a true mace, it will be one handed, he'll have a hand free to grab and you being a beginner, will be in trouble. He can with one free hand, goes to smashing fingers to throwing you down to the ground. You can do it too, if you were a pro.
That is, unless you're talking about foam weapons, in which maces are usually balanced like swords. But even then, since its striking zone is so small, there's a disadvantage. The advantage then is that you're not limited to two 'edges.' You could deliver a strike from any angle. Even then, if you have a 'pro' boffer guy with a sword vs an amatuer with a mace, the pro should still win. Then again, there are also round boffer 'swords,' which can do anything a boffer mace can and more.
If the mace wielder were skilled, he'd be able to "recycle" momentum to cut down the recovery time after a swing. Even then, in terms of speed, he'd be at an enormous disadvantage against an aggressive novice swordsman, who would monopolize on the mace fighters slow recovery. It'd be more accurate if you flipped your statement, kpak, saying that a novice swordsman could (quite viably) beat an adept mace fighter. The other way around is BS.
A sword will generally have superior reach, balance, and versatility than a mace. It is also faster to recover after a swing or anything of the sort. If the mace fighter could (and its soooo unlikely) block a swordsmans attack, the swordsman could follow up with another and another before the mace figher could even repost. On the other hand, if the mace fighters attack were to be parried, he'd be utterly screwed.
Anywho, claiming that you're trained doesn't mean that you are. If I felt like it, I could obviously start shouting out credentials (or even make some up) but in the end, I'll just let facts speak for themselves. Fact: if you swing any weapon down so hard that it can barely be hard-blocked, then its incredibly easy to parry/beat to the side. Fact: a 'pro' swordsman would have absolutely no difficulty in doing this, especially to an amatuer.
lol pwned but i agree with kadeemtheking if he knew how to hold that mase properly they other guy would of been crushed. Trust me ive seen pro swords men be beat by a amature macemen.
kpak I can't help but suspect that you're a fake, who doesn't know a thing about swordsmanship (or macemanship for that matter). A mace is a very top-heavy weapon, which supplements its armor-smashing abilities. However its balance doesn't support any type of techniques that involves finesse. One miss with a mace and you're done for.
well you said one miss but if you dident have a miss. Ya its a top heavy weapon but if u get it down hard enough you wont need to recover. And i probably know more about this stuff than you i am not a trained macemen but at shortsword's,daggers, polearms, bow's,and regular swords i am.
Well if you were trained, then you'd know how hard it is to score the initial hit. Even more so, you'd know how easy it is to beat/parry a weapon -- especially when it has to do large swings to be effective. And once again, your alleged training should tell you that a 'pro' swordsman would have an easy time performing a simple beat or parry.
holding the mace like a two handed sword...wow somebody needs to teach him the basics of chivalrous warfareing duels....in all reality i wouldve crushed you with that mace=)
pretty good intensity, fairly clean form. Liked the knockout blow. Not sure what to make of that "mace". Weapons appeared to be reasonably good in terms of weight.
lol i dont think mace should be used as a dueling weapon but thats all we had was a mace and a long sword. I won because of a tremendous advantage. Mace is more of anti-armor weapon. But he was using the mace like a sword lol.

Mace and shield combination is very practical in a tight line, where all you can do is smash down is hard as you can.

Useing a one handed mace without a shield in the offhand or a Sword in the main hand, is a very short and deadly thing.
The video is rubbish by the way.

wonder what kinda dmg a real mace woulda done to a real sword, if he was actually able to hit with it
Dethent 3 years ago
probably not as much as it seems. the shaft of the mace is round and would hardly nick the sword blade.
plus, with a mace like that, being wielded in both hands, there isnt much of a chance that the fight would last long.
but yeah, if u can hit the sword, it wont destroy it, but it wont matter =P =]

especially if your mace is made out of cardboard, you can swing it as fast as you want and still get your head smacked in.

Must have been very funny... but has nothing to do with historical sword and mace fight...
A real mace, that big, would have been imposible to handle...

Yes, but it can be very hard to use effectively as the chain could make it hard to control.
