Lions eat, arguably, the largest prey of any land mammal. They regularly kill buffalo due to their social nature.
Tigers do not need to kill gaur. It is not worth the risk.

i too wasn't pleased learning that these big territorial short-tempered boys have to live so close to each other and are forced into extreme fights on daily basis, but then i watched a documentary here on youtube about that tiger park in china. apparently, the tigers are thriving in that park and are doing extremely well--much better than in the wild. they have their own hierarchy and they know who is the top cat.

They don't know the difference between eachother themselves...They mate with eachother and they hunt the same sized prey. They aren't fighting because 'lions hate tigers'. They fight just as lions would among themselves. -And for all those animal rights retards ; They must enjoy lounging around and being fed. And animals kept in captivity almost always are offspring of injured animals, and are released.

Tigers and Lions are cousins, granted a tiger is more suited to this and generally kill lions 1v1, this encounter is so far outside both animals normal routine the comparisons are barely possible.
If both lions lived in the same continent, it wouldn't even come to this. Lions still live in prides, and tigers would avoid them at all costs. Tigers are solitary. Lion prides would hunt and kill any tiger who came within range.
