@711nong I've never heard of being certified to euthanize. For the most part, it just depends on your state. In some states it's illegal for vet techs to euthanize animals. In a normal clinical setting, vet techs rarely perform euths, it's usually the vets. VT's may assist by restraints or preparing the solution, but they rarely administer it. In lab settings, vet techs may be required to euthanize.. it just depends on the job/state.
I start clinic rotations on Monday. I'm terrified of the cats. When we did feline handling in class we got an INSANE cat that scared the crap outta me.
Cat veins are harder to pull from because they are so tiny and the needles are usually too large. Even using the smallest needle, which is 25 gauge, is difficult to pull blood with. She pulled from the jugular because it is an easier target and blood usually flows faster there. Also she did not pull a gallon of blood, she pulled 3mL (3ccs) of blood. Depending on what tests they needed to run, it can require that much.
@bleedingxhearts2 The Chem machine usually requires 1-2ccs of blood. The CBC machine (calculates the total blood cell count) requires 1 cc of blood. After working in the veterinary field for 4 years, you learn the easiest way to pull blood.
im 12 years old and i want to be a veteran all my life i have been saving animals finding them homes if they are strays i have help with my parents im caring loving and love animals no matter what they are <3
I am 13 and I want to become a vet assistant , but how can I volunter at a local spca. I lova animals, I have 2 cats, 1 rabbit, 5 birds, 2 turtles, and 14 golfishes. All I do with my life is go to school and take care of my animals. I do not even have a boy friend
I want to be a vet tech but I really dont know if I'm strong enough..and not physically. I mean emotionally. I hate hurting animals, and sometimes in order to make them feel better, they have to go through a little bit of pain. Like there when she was taking blood.. you could tell the cat was uncomfortable and scared. I hate doing that to animals.. I also have one question to anyone that is a vet tech.. what is the clothing for a vet tech? Is it kind of like nursing apperal? thx :)
@TheKarlez well im in school to be a vet tech...HARD WORK and DEDICATION, thats for sure! lol and in the long run the little prick to get blood to test is better than the cat getting deadly diseases. I wear scrubs in school and depending on he clinic you work at it could vary from scrubs to jeans or khaki's. This is really my dream job and i couldn't see me doing anything else :)
im 20 years old and since i was little or as far as i could remember i had an enormous passion for animals...but my parents didn't approve of this ...i feel like i have been separated from what i love..it makes me cry that im a freekin dental assistant instead of a vet tech or vet. :( but i will achieve my dreams soon!
@maymay9910 If I were you, screw what your parents say. It's YOUR life. Do what makes you happy. There is nothing worse to me than going to a job I don't have a passion for. With the money you make as a dental assistant, I'm sure it wont be too hard to pay for vet tech school so it's not like you're depending on them for money.
I'm taking a class for this soon. I hope I can find a job! AWW @ the kitty that comes out. SOO cute. Taking blood seems difficult, but needles aren't painful and probably not to animals especially.
@Lisy8195 Same here! I was wanting to be a Veterinarian but their really is nooo way I'm gonna be able to handle the whole "surgery" part and being so serious, lol. So I think i'm gonna go for a Veterinarian Technician since its more of providing "love" for the animals and less blood. Ya i'm gonna have to work on the whole blood part. Cuz I cant even stand seeing my own blood, ughgh ;)
I'm an incoming freshman in college and pondering my career options. I've heard that vet techs are in great demand right now, and its a job that I'm interested in pursuing. Just out of curiosity, what does the annual salary look like?
it depends on the surgery and what it is but yes you do, IF you are a LISCENCED vet tech. If your not your more than likely not because if theres problems the DVM can get their liscence pulled. hopefuly this answered your Q.
Anyone know if vet techs are required to be certified to euthanize or are required to do so?

Depends were you work. Most of the time it sucks and there are no bennies,But the rewards of being an advocate for the pet is what it's all about.
I was a vet tech for 30 yrs and I am still licensed.

I'm also looking into this career and I think it's around $30,000 per year depending on where you live.
