hi, my boss at saw a similar colored light moving past there house near concord they went out side to look at it, and it was about the same size as a car and hovering at street lamp hight before they saw it move up the road towards rotary park, a work mate viewed a similar light hovering quite close to the car park at beachlands speedway so i don't think the moon would be that close to the ground unless it was just popping over to say hello.....lol funny how people say its the moon
At work last night at 4:15am me and two others watched a twinkling light move slowly over Queenstown, it stopped and then moved in an S shape then faded out. Minutes later we spotted another moving slowly and then it stopped aswell. It stayed there till we had to go back to work. They gave off the same light as a satellite does. Another work college has seen lights around Otago too. Very exciting :)
@smokeypitbbull When did you last see the moon? Fortunately for you I know the difference between the Moon and a light that appears within the atmosphere, moving back and forth. and besides you can't detect the moon moving that fast with the naked eye, there have been sightings of this same colored light over dunedin near rotary park and nearly 50 years ago by my mums friend around the same area and just recently hovering close to the car park at beachlands speedway, and i asked my auntie if she has seen such a light as she looks out towards the beach and she said no but remembered her x husband telling her of a similar light out near portabello.
@wazza1701 There are many videos on here of these type of coloured lights - I will never forget how bright it was when white, the light reflected in the ocean, then sparkling all colours...thank you for your comment...skeptics will always say it's something explainable - however I reckon you can only gain wisdom form actually witnessing these lights, realizing it's not your imagination or a plane or the Moon...hopefully there will be more sightings! yea if it were the moon you would see a lot more detail and it would be a lot bigger this is just a light created buy some object, and even if it were mars or something, like the moon, it just wouldn't be moving that fast after staying still for a few minutes. nice video.

I wonder if it's something in orbit catching some sunlight...but then if it moves suddenly..maybe it's not. Or the maybe the curvature of the earth is magnifying the light reflected from an aeroplane much farther into the distance and when it hits a certain angle, its position appears to change abnormally quickly..just some thoughts...I don't really know what I'm talking about.
Ever since I lived in Lake Rotoiti in the North Island I have seen strange lights above the lake and the lights changed to different colours it was weird but we do see stuff like that in the Rotorua area
Good pic's mate. I'm a pro shooter in Australia, and I have seen the very same thing out in the Nullarbor desert, and the Simpson desert, many times. When I have seen them close enough through my high powered scope, they look like a metallic saucer shape, with a yellowish, red glowing aura around them. These craft can hover, and move at incredible speeds, with out making the slightest noise. They don't even brake the sound barrier with a bang. All I can say is they are not from this planet.!!!!

Your own observation of these 'objects' is really interesting - you say a metallic saucer shape? Cliche? Still, very strange and I agree, they may not be of this World....
Wow what a fantastic video, this has been noted as a genuine appearance of 'the star' from share international magazine. Google them up and watch other peoples videos/photos of 'the star' too. Apparently it responds to thought e.g. please move up or down etc so give it a try next time it comes by :)
@MrCricketRox i liv in dunedin, me n my partner just watched a bright white light randomly appear n just seemd to drift over dunedin, the light didnt flicker or change coloure at al and there was no sound that we could here, iv seen heeps of different kinds of plains flying over dunedin and can always hear them, im sure someone else must have seen it... it was visible for around 1 minit then it just began to fade away until we cudnt c it anymore
hey i just saw one. not 5 mins ago. it was very bright moving fast. no sound. and then it just faded out! my partner confirms this he saw it too. omg!! im in leith area. and this was pointing towards the octagon area.. very very bright light i wonder if others saw it too!

I saw the same light but in waiheke island the light was moving faster It was soundless thought it was a comet it went right over us then just vanished into thin air this is cool I also have a few photos also!! Another strange thing that happened is that when I took a close up photo of the object it was really bright and I returned home to look at it and some how it mysteriously got wiped from my iPhone now that is something I cannot explain.
Dunedin Astronomical Society educational director Ash Pennell said the object was not a UFO but Jupiter - "the fourth brightest object in the sky not man-made".
Apparently, Jupiter was in the same position as the "unidentified object", he said.
When planets were low in the sky, they had a tendency to change colours as you were observing them through a "double thickness of atmosphere".
Jupiter would soon be obscured by the sun, before reappearing as a morning object during late April.
@vivekkumarrana99 Hi there. Everyone has an opinion and I can assure you, this was not Jupiter as it moved in relation to the land below in the space of ten minutes. It crossed the sky, above the hills, heading towards the east, changed direction and went towards the west, which a planet does not do. So you can tell Ash Pennell that he might need to re-think his career.

@jdidnz yeah I saw it last night too in dunedin. I have seen it for the last week now. I have a short clip of it I recorded the other day. Its silent, it moves on its own accord, it changes colours and it changes shape.

i saw the same lights here in Australia when i went wishing at my local beach at night time it was near an airport but they were not planes and they hovered in the same place for a while and then went down low behind the tree line in the distance, so idk if they were helicopters or not but they looked like this

But yeah, I can't prove it, though the chances of it being a plane are far higher than it being a UFO given the flight path and time it has been showing up.

The fact it's a flight path combined with the times it has shown up make it far likely to be a plane than anything else.
@dubiousdesigns Why would it stay in our horizon and sky for 5 hours? it only takes 30minutes for a plane to get from dunedin to chch. This thing also changed its direction a lot, every 10minutes it was traveling in a different direction. It was silent and flashing red/green/blue/gold/purple. This is no plane.
I saw 2 of these UFOs over Exeter in Devon at 8.55pm on 13th March, very bright orange lights, I observed for a few minutes before one shot off followed by the other. Def not aeroplanes or helicopters - or chinese lanterns! many other people filmed the same ones all over the world over 13th - 14th March and before and still being spotted.
Definitely an airplane coming in for landing. You switch the video just as it's landing behind the hills, we can see it going down, obviously to the Dunedin airport. In the 2nd half you add music. Music on a UFO video is an immediate indication of a hoax. Why would anyone add music to a UFO video? Makes no sense. The fact that it's there again in the same spot would indicate that it's on a flight path.

@ufoguy1962 As it went down over the hills it rose back up into the sky over the course of the whole night. it also repetitively changed from red to blue to green to violet to gold. also it changed in size. This video isn't very good but a lot more other people are also witnessing it too. It was in the sky last night again over Dunedin NZ

Having had a look at Aircraft landing lights designs, front on, I am wondering; if this was an approaching aircraft from a considerable distance, would it not be either two in each wing, white or yellow only (if a Jumbo, say) OR a small single one in the nose or front landing gear? I'm no engineer, however, I thought that was pretty standard. The mystery of this thing was it's 'organic' movements, changing both shape and colour and silent.
@simisenti Who said the aircraft was travelling away? It's actually approaching low and slow. That's why it looks like it's not moving at first. When a plane is on approach over a populated area they don't come in like this. When a plane is on approach and it's over water or vast rural areas, they come in low and slow. In my city, to the west of me is all rural, when planes come in from the west I can watch them for 10 minutes or more on approach. They look like they're motionless.
@ufoguy1962 Ok..there are videos on here of multiple 'orbs' or coloured lights, changing shape, colour and position in the sky, at the same time, crossing flightpaths and moving at such speed, that are not CGI or anything like that and which I have never seen a plane perform. This is what is puzzling.

@stillwater027 Thank you for the response. There's a general rule of thumb with UFO videos that when music is added it's to mask the sound of the airplane. Very common stuff in the hoaxers handbook. The original dialogue would be much more interesting than a music soundtrack. Your commentary during the event is as valuable as the footage itself and would add a level of realism to the video. Unfortunately, adding a soundtrack just screams hoax. Thanks again for your fair and sane responses.

It's an airplane, I reckon. 1) we see the single bright light separate into a large central light with a smaller light on each side 2) Dunedin International Airport.
i seen some bright lights looking out from the oval about 2 months ago...by the time i got a clip on my cell,, it had stopped the flashing so it just looks like a bright star and didn't put it on youtube as i was drunk and said "hay it might just be a star or maybe just Jesus"
I witnessed this thing on 16th march. On a forum someone posted stills from a video of a UFO spotted in new zealand a month ago. I believe they the same. I will add the stills as a video response

I also saw the exact light at the same time as you on Sunday the 13th. I was in Mornington with my partner and his son and we all saw it looking out towards the sea and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. It has freaked me out ever since. We have never seen anything like it. We could only see it as red though from where we were. It was so bizarre the way it moved. Backwards and forwards as like nothing we have ever seen before.

I live in Dunedin. Have seen similar lights . Looking at the video you can't easily place the point where the sky meets the sea. In fact if you didn't know the area you may well not even realize it is shot looking out over the Pacific Ocean. From the hills shown I'd say it was a squid boat , with it fishing lights on , trawling on the horizon . You can often see several of them spread out along the horizon.
@AJPemberton Both sightings on the two nights were in the same location, above the hills, over Dunedin itself, facing north, not east, towards ocean. It is looking up the coastline, towards the Otago Peninsula which extends to the right of screen. The second half of film does not show the hills, as it was past twilight and the camera couldn't pick them up.
@stillwater027 Thanks for the extra info. But am I wrong about the location of the horizon ? Especially in the first vid , before you zoomed in , it looks just like all the squid boats I have ever seen. And they will fish the same area from one night to the next on occasion. Are you so sure it was 'above' the hills and not 10km out to sea ?
@AJPemberton Very sure, but that's taking my word for it and I wished now that I filmed more of the landscape as a reference - you can see on the first night, the waves rolling in on the right and the beach. The angle and height of the light would indicate its airborne or at least above sea level.

@Threads2010 Maybe a regular visitor? Yes, it was buzzy, but without sound, just the sea - no engine noise. Unless, as other people have pointed out, it was a plane approaching from the north, far away. But it seemed to be close, near the hills in the foreground.
@allreligionskill Wrong, I spotted this UFO and Sirius at the same time. This UFO also moved around our atmosphere unlike all of the other stars. Can people stop coming here and saying its this or that, unless you can actually prove it.
@bono1be Now that would be choice, if you filmed it as well - then a comparison and maybe more eyewitnesses? Guess you would need solid physical evidence before anyone would take you seriously.

It was amazing watching it over 5 hours, its path it had levitated through was really unusual and would have been great to create a montage of its flight path
That looks like a very unusual plane. Why would a plane hover around the area like that? If it was a plane wouldn't you hear the engine. When I see strange lights in the sky I usually hear an engine that how I know it is a plane or helicopter. It could be a helicopter. I have seen helicopters fly around at night. They are creepy. they come right at you and they almost hit you maybe for a joke then land on top of a random building.

@mattjoystick08 Satellites move much faster and are much higher in the air. One can see satellites on any given night, just about anywhere in the world; what we're seeing here looks very different. Most certainly not a satellite imo.
@slipmat707 I agree, satellites look like a star moving across the sky at a constant pace and in a straight line, that is most definitely NOT a satellite. Anyone can see a satellite if they just look overhead on a clear night, one will pass within a relatively short time as there are so many of them in orbit.
There were always 2 lights that were separated by a constant calculated distance. The 2nd light is hard to see in this video although this may be because the 2nd light was behind the first light - bad perspective. When the light appears to change size/shape this is just the 2nd light in the distance coming into vision.
A plane doesn't exhibit blue, red, green, gold and even violet colours. There are a lot of people saying that this is a plane. The footage isn't the best, seeing it for yourself was much more convincing that it was no man made plane. It appeared to be a star earlier in the night at around 2am, this was also when appeared to be its largest and was also very high. At times it appeared very close, it appeared to be ''scanning'' the beach? the waves? a major Tsunami did just occur...
Precisely how a plane looks when it's flying toward you, with landing lights on. When it's still, it's flying toward you. When it moves slowly left or right, it's just adjusting its course.
@nanyl - From where I live it's common to see approaching aircraft for ten or 15 minutes as they come toward me. They may look the same during that time, but they actually travel a good 50 to 100km. As for no aircraft being scheduled at that time, did you check air traffic control records? Public timetables of passenger flights are only part of the traffic in and out of airports.
@GeoffBlackmore I have checked the Dunedin airport schedule for the dates, a flight was due to land on both days at 21.00 contrary to what I stated earlier. Only thing is tho', the light disappeared over the hills/ridge AWAY from the Airport. So effectively rules out an aircraft. BTW..you need to understand about Dunedin, it is not a busy place by any stretch of the imagination! ;) Those lights would not have belonged to a light aircraft AND be facing toward you but travelling backwards.
@nanyl - While the plane may be flying toward the observer for most of the video, they can change the approach before landing, including veering all the way around, to land from the opposite direction. I'm not at all surprised it disappeared behind hills. Flying out of sight behind a hill doesn't mean it's anything unusual. Regarding the airport schedule, what schedule is that? Private aircraft, and positioning runs of airlines, don't have public schedules.
@GeoffBlackmore As i commented before, I saw this thing in the sky between 2am to 7am. It was traveling around for 5 hours. This footage doesn't do its justice, it appeared very close at times and very far away at other times
Great footage, but it would be great if next time - should there be one - you had the camera on a tripod like you say you will. But then again, I know that more often than not the situation is such that you haven't got a tripod to hand or time to get it fixed to the camera/video cam. But well done and really appreciate the apparent honesty and sense of truth in your comments.
@777Gagarin Thanks! - I know it can be frustrating when you are not prepared (I only had the rocks on the beach to place my camera for stability) and my camera doesn't seem to be able to focus when in low light. I was just glad I had charged it! Thankfully there are moments in the footage when the object is clear and to me, it doesn't look like a plane or helicopter or balloon. What other man-made flying machine is there that glows like that?

@stillwater027 Hi stillwater, any more sightings yet? Bloody strange atmospheric conditions over here in France yesterday, the whole sky was full of this choaking dust like stuff. Ref the dog thing. The dog has taste, but god you should see this posty we have. @stillwater027 Check out Alison Kruse videos on You Tube. Aircraft do look like that and especially filmed at extreme distance. Alison lives in a busy ATC zone in the US and films aircraft at extreme distance and presents them as UFOs. If the aircraft is flying a vector route and coming generally towards you it will appear to hang and hover in the air. Many people can't seem to grasp that concept. Also notice right at the very end there is a clear strobe pulse as from an aircraft.
@TE3EJ As I mentioned elsewhere....the 'light' apparently disappeared over the horizon, away from the Airport. Plus, the only flights scheduled that would have such strong lights, are for arrival at 21.00 at that particular Airport. It does not take a plane 20+ minutes from its position to do that. I am familiar with the area also.
@nanyl Where are you getting the 20+ minutes from? The video has it under 10 minutes for both portions of film. It doesn't have to be a scheduled aircraft. Think RNZAF? It could be anything. C-130, Boeing 757 or P-3 Orion and all would have strong lights. I'm not one of those people that automatically goes for the UFO solution. Lots of people are fooled by aviation lights, star, planets at night. You Tube is full of them.

A camera doesn't do its justice, observing this thing over the course of 5 hours it was apparent that it was no man made aircraft. It may be hard to believe but you have no proof of what it is. Besides this is new zealand, we own very few aircrafts at all, very quiet place for air travels and the fact that it moved around the horizon for 5 hours+ was very interesting
@TE3EJ I would like to remain rational and agree with you that it was a plane - however there is parts of the observation that keeps nagging. Maybe I'm not that educated to know the difference. Next time when I see landing lights 100% from a plane, I can make a proper assessment. It was just weird that it was late twilight, my eyes adapted enough to see the shape of a plane with green and red lights either side of wings - I wasn't that far from airport to make out fuselage in the sky.
@TE3EJ So the pulsing light / strobe is the external navigation lights (or whatever they are called) Ok, that makes sense. Will check out those suggested videos. Thanks for that.
@stillwater027 No problem. Thanks for the reply. The optics can also have an effect on the light source. For example check out 'diamond shaped' or 'orb shaped' UFOs on you tube. People think that the shape is actually present when it is the camera producing it. Light sources will also bloom on video masking others. For example powerful landing lights masking strobes etc.
I'm going to have the whole footage analysed as soon as possible and maybe post results...I'm gutted I didn't have a tripod at the time. Next time I will be more organised.

@nanyl The object was visible for about 10 minutes, eventually going behind a ridge of hills to the west, out of sight. It also faded in intensity compared to when it first appeared. Very interesting....
saw this thing this morning in Dunedin. We saw it from 2am to 6am, it appeared to be doing some kind of sophisticated procedure. At times changing between red to blue to green, changing in size and also moving fast across the sky and then repeating its unusual procedure.

and besides you can't detect the moon moving that fast with the naked eye, there have been sightings of this same colored light over dunedin near rotary park and nearly 50 years ago by my mums friend around the same area and just recently hovering close to the car park at beachlands speedway, and i asked my auntie if she has seen such a light as she looks out towards the beach and she said no but remembered her x husband telling her of a similar light out near portabello.

@wazza1701 There are many videos on here of these type of coloured lights - I will never forget how bright it was when white, the light reflected in the ocean, then sparkling all colours...thank you for your comment...skeptics will always say it's something explainable - however I reckon you can only gain wisdom form actually witnessing these lights, realizing it's not your imagination or a plane or the Moon...hopefully there will be more sightings! I wonder if it's something in orbit catching some sunlight...but then if it moves suddenly..maybe it's not. Or the maybe the curvature of the earth is magnifying the light reflected from an aeroplane much farther into the distance and when it hits a certain angle, its position appears to change abnormally quickly..just some thoughts...I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Ever since I lived in Lake Rotoiti in the North Island I have seen strange lights above the lake and the lights changed to different colours it was weird but we do see stuff like that in the Rotorua area

Good pic's mate. I'm a pro shooter in Australia, and I have seen the very same thing out in the Nullarbor desert, and the Simpson desert, many times. When I have seen them close enough through my high powered scope, they look like a metallic saucer shape, with a yellowish, red glowing aura around them. These craft can hover, and move at incredible speeds, with out making the slightest noise. They don't even brake the sound barrier with a bang. All I can say is they are not from this planet.!!!!

@MrCricketRox i liv in dunedin, me n my partner just watched a bright white light randomly appear n just seemd to drift over dunedin, the light didnt flicker or change coloure at al and there was no sound that we could here, iv seen heeps of different kinds of plains flying over dunedin and can always hear them, im sure someone else must have seen it... it was visible for around 1 minit then it just began to fade away until we cudnt c it anymore

I saw the same light but in waiheke island the light was moving faster It was soundless thought it was a comet it went right over us then just vanished into thin air this is cool I also have a few photos also!! Another strange thing that happened is that when I took a close up photo of the object it was really bright and I returned home to look at it and some how it mysteriously got wiped from my iPhone now that is something I cannot explain.

Dunedin Astronomical Society educational director Ash Pennell said the object was not a UFO but Jupiter - "the fourth brightest object in the sky not man-made".
Apparently, Jupiter was in the same position as the "unidentified object", he said.
When planets were low in the sky, they had a tendency to change colours as you were observing them through a "double thickness of atmosphere".
Jupiter would soon be obscured by the sun, before reappearing as a morning object during late April.

@vivekkumarrana99 Hi there. Everyone has an opinion and I can assure you, this was not Jupiter as it moved in relation to the land below in the space of ten minutes. It crossed the sky, above the hills, heading towards the east, changed direction and went towards the west, which a planet does not do. So you can tell Ash Pennell that he might need to re-think his career.

i saw the same lights here in Australia when i went wishing at my local beach at night time it was near an airport but they were not planes and they hovered in the same place for a while and then went down low behind the tree line in the distance, so idk if they were helicopters or not but they looked like this

@bono1be Look at the flight schedule for Dunedin airport. The same time for the past five nights? Like the Monday to Friday commute for the Christchurch connecting flight? Have a look tonight and see if it's there...
The fact it's a flight path combined with the times it has shown up make it far likely to be a plane than anything else.

This thing also changed its direction a lot, every 10minutes it was traveling in a different direction. It was silent and flashing red/green/blue/gold/purple. This is no plane.

I saw 2 of these UFOs over Exeter in Devon at 8.55pm on 13th March, very bright orange lights, I observed for a few minutes before one shot off followed by the other. Def not aeroplanes or helicopters - or chinese lanterns! many other people filmed the same ones all over the world over 13th - 14th March and before and still being spotted.

Definitely an airplane coming in for landing. You switch the video just as it's landing behind the hills, we can see it going down, obviously to the Dunedin airport. In the 2nd half you add music. Music on a UFO video is an immediate indication of a hoax. Why would anyone add music to a UFO video? Makes no sense. The fact that it's there again in the same spot would indicate that it's on a flight path.
Congrats on all the views you've gotten but this is nothing more than an airplane. Thanks.

This video isn't very good but a lot more other people are also witnessing it too. It was in the sky last night again over Dunedin NZ

Having had a look at Aircraft landing lights designs, front on, I am wondering; if this was an approaching aircraft from a considerable distance, would it not be either two in each wing, white or yellow only (if a Jumbo, say) OR a small single one in the nose or front landing gear? I'm no engineer, however, I thought that was pretty standard. The mystery of this thing was it's 'organic' movements, changing both shape and colour and silent.

@simisenti Who said the aircraft was travelling away? It's actually approaching low and slow. That's why it looks like it's not moving at first. When a plane is on approach over a populated area they don't come in like this. When a plane is on approach and it's over water or vast rural areas, they come in low and slow. In my city, to the west of me is all rural, when planes come in from the west I can watch them for 10 minutes or more on approach. They look like they're motionless.

@stillwater027 Thank you for the response. There's a general rule of thumb with UFO videos that when music is added it's to mask the sound of the airplane. Very common stuff in the hoaxers handbook. The original dialogue would be much more interesting than a music soundtrack. Your commentary during the event is as valuable as the footage itself and would add a level of realism to the video. Unfortunately, adding a soundtrack just screams hoax. Thanks again for your fair and sane responses.

I also saw the exact light at the same time as you on Sunday the 13th. I was in Mornington with my partner and his son and we all saw it looking out towards the sea and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. It has freaked me out ever since. We have never seen anything like it. We could only see it as red though from where we were. It was so bizarre the way it moved. Backwards and forwards as like nothing we have ever seen before.

I live in Dunedin. Have seen similar lights . Looking at the video you can't easily place the point where the sky meets the sea. In fact if you didn't know the area you may well not even realize it is shot looking out over the Pacific Ocean. From the hills shown I'd say it was a squid boat , with it fishing lights on , trawling on the horizon . You can often see several of them spread out along the horizon.

@AJPemberton Both sightings on the two nights were in the same location, above the hills, over Dunedin itself, facing north, not east, towards ocean. It is looking up the coastline, towards the Otago Peninsula which extends to the right of screen. The second half of film does not show the hills, as it was past twilight and the camera couldn't pick them up.

Especially in the first vid , before you zoomed in , it looks just like all the squid boats I have ever seen. And they will fish the same area from one night to the next on occasion. Are you so sure it was 'above' the hills and not 10km out to sea ?

@AJPemberton Very sure, but that's taking my word for it and I wished now that I filmed more of the landscape as a reference - you can see on the first night, the waves rolling in on the right and the beach. The angle and height of the light would indicate its airborne or at least above sea level.

That looks like a very unusual plane. Why would a plane hover around the area like that? If it was a plane wouldn't you hear the engine. When I see strange lights in the sky I usually hear an engine that how I know it is a plane or helicopter. It could be a helicopter. I have seen helicopters fly around at night. They are creepy. they come right at you and they almost hit you maybe for a joke then land on top of a random building.
The second one looks like the back of a plane.

There were always 2 lights that were separated by a constant calculated distance. The 2nd light is hard to see in this video although this may be because the 2nd light was behind the first light - bad perspective. When the light appears to change size/shape this is just the 2nd light in the distance coming into vision.

A plane doesn't exhibit blue, red, green, gold and even violet colours. There are a lot of people saying that this is a plane. The footage isn't the best, seeing it for yourself was much more convincing that it was no man made plane. It appeared to be a star earlier in the night at around 2am, this was also when appeared to be its largest and was also very high. At times it appeared very close, it appeared to be ''scanning'' the beach? the waves? a major Tsunami did just occur...

Precisely how a plane looks when it's flying toward you, with landing lights on. When it's still, it's flying toward you. When it moves slowly left or right, it's just adjusting its course.

@nanyl - From where I live it's common to see approaching aircraft for ten or 15 minutes as they come toward me. They may look the same during that time, but they actually travel a good 50 to 100km. As for no aircraft being scheduled at that time, did you check air traffic control records? Public timetables of passenger flights are only part of the traffic in and out of airports.

@GeoffBlackmore I have checked the Dunedin airport schedule for the dates, a flight was due to land on both days at 21.00 contrary to what I stated earlier. Only thing is tho', the light disappeared over the hills/ridge AWAY from the Airport. So effectively rules out an aircraft. BTW..you need to understand about Dunedin, it is not a busy place by any stretch of the imagination! ;) Those lights would not have belonged to a light aircraft AND be facing toward you but travelling backwards.

@nanyl - While the plane may be flying toward the observer for most of the video, they can change the approach before landing, including veering all the way around, to land from the opposite direction. I'm not at all surprised it disappeared behind hills. Flying out of sight behind a hill doesn't mean it's anything unusual. Regarding the airport schedule, what schedule is that? Private aircraft, and positioning runs of airlines, don't have public schedules.

@GeoffBlackmore As i commented before, I saw this thing in the sky between 2am to 7am. It was traveling around for 5 hours. This footage doesn't do its justice, it appeared very close at times and very far away at other times

Best to contact the CAA and ask what it was - they'll tell you if you ask nicely. They only need the date, time and general location.

Great footage, but it would be great if next time - should there be one - you had the camera on a tripod like you say you will. But then again, I know that more often than not the situation is such that you haven't got a tripod to hand or time to get it fixed to the camera/video cam. But well done and really appreciate the apparent honesty and sense of truth in your comments.

@777Gagarin Thanks! - I know it can be frustrating when you are not prepared (I only had the rocks on the beach to place my camera for stability) and my camera doesn't seem to be able to focus when in low light. I was just glad I had charged it! Thankfully there are moments in the footage when the object is clear and to me, it doesn't look like a plane or helicopter or balloon. What other man-made flying machine is there that glows like that?

Honestly, thought the stupid mutt had more taste. Anyway, keep it up and keep posting, I shall be looking forward to any further strange happenings.

@stillwater027 Hi stillwater, any more sightings yet? Bloody strange atmospheric conditions over here in France yesterday, the whole sky was full of this choaking dust like stuff. Ref the dog thing. The dog has taste, but god you should see this posty we have. Not only is she bone ugly, but she is as nasty as only the french can be, she is also so much up herself that there ain't room for anyone else.

@stillwater027 Check out Alison Kruse videos on You Tube. Aircraft do look like that and especially filmed at extreme distance. Alison lives in a busy ATC zone in the US and films aircraft at extreme distance and presents them as UFOs. If the aircraft is flying a vector route and coming generally towards you it will appear to hang and hover in the air. Many people can't seem to grasp that concept. Also notice right at the very end there is a clear strobe pulse as from an aircraft.

@TE3EJ As I mentioned elsewhere....the 'light' apparently disappeared over the horizon, away from the Airport. Plus, the only flights scheduled that would have such strong lights, are for arrival at 21.00 at that particular Airport. It does not take a plane 20+ minutes from its position to do that. I am familiar with the area also.

@nanyl Where are you getting the 20+ minutes from? The video has it under 10 minutes for both portions of film. It doesn't have to be a scheduled aircraft. Think RNZAF? It could be anything. C-130, Boeing 757 or P-3 Orion and all would have strong lights. I'm not one of those people that automatically goes for the UFO solution. Lots of people are fooled by aviation lights, star, planets at night. You Tube is full of them.

@TE3EJ I would have thought the same thing if I had simply just watched the video. A camera doesn't do its justice, observing this thing over the course of 5 hours it was apparent that it was no man made aircraft. It may be hard to believe but you have no proof of what it is. Besides this is new zealand, we own very few aircrafts at all, very quiet place for air travels and the fact that it moved around the horizon for 5 hours+ was very interesting

@TE3EJ I would like to remain rational and agree with you that it was a plane - however there is parts of the observation that keeps nagging. Maybe I'm not that educated to know the difference. Next time when I see landing lights 100% from a plane, I can make a proper assessment. It was just weird that it was late twilight, my eyes adapted enough to see the shape of a plane with green and red lights either side of wings - I wasn't that far from airport to make out fuselage in the sky.

@stillwater027 No problem. Thanks for the reply. The optics can also have an effect on the light source. For example check out 'diamond shaped' or 'orb shaped' UFOs on you tube. People think that the shape is actually present when it is the camera producing it. Light sources will also bloom on video masking others. For example powerful landing lights masking strobes etc.

@nanyl Hello...I think I have the time on the video - 13th March was 8:28pm and a cloud free night...the next night, 14th March was at 8:38pm and was a cloudy night and a lot darker. Cheers

@nanyl The object was visible for about 10 minutes, eventually going behind a ridge of hills to the west, out of sight. It also faded in intensity compared to when it first appeared. Very interesting....

saw this thing this morning in Dunedin. We saw it from 2am to 6am, it appeared to be doing some kind of sophisticated procedure. At times changing between red to blue to green, changing in size and also moving fast across the sky and then repeating its unusual procedure.
