How can people be so insensitive? This is a tragic song of remembrance and does not glorify war in a way that British and American military songs do. To flag it as "possibly offensive" is an insult to the hundreds of thousands of German soldiers and civilians whose only mistake was being alive in that era.

I have met a survivor of the Battle of Stalingrad. He was wounded early on, and flown back to Germany to rehab. He said it was the best thing to ever happen to him. There were 300,000 of his countrymen who did not return. Hearing the voice live, of a man who was there, leaves more of an impression than any book or video. Then again, I have had friends who can point to names on the Vietnam memorial and say that was their friend who did not return either.
Although my great-grandfather didn't die in ww2 ,i still listen to this song in his memorial. He told me he didn't kill anyone because he was luky to be stationared in Crete. (Greece)

This song is not about an army, country or politics....Its about the basic foot soldier losing a comrade in battle and paying respect to him. Somewhere around the middle of the war old men and kids from the Jugendchor were drafted to fight. many times that draft was at gun point. Like American soldiers during Viet Nam, there was no choice. You went and did what you were told regardless....This song honors the comrade and nothing more...

When I used to work at the docks I made friends with a few Germans that used to come in reguarly as they were crewmen on a ferry.
They were good guys,could get us anything we wanted and cheap.LOL.
Me and a couple of buddies were often dragged to the crews messroom for a knees-up and that was on the firms time.

I have met a survivor of the Battle of Stalingrad. He was wounded early on, and flown back to Germany to rehab. He said it was the best thing to ever happen to him. There were 300,000 of his countrymen who did not return. Hearing the voice live, of a man who was there, leaves more of an impression than any book or video. Then again, I have had friends who can point to names on the Vietnam memorial and say that was their friend who did not return either.
